depends what you call a franchise QB. Brad Johnson was a good QB but they had all time great D that year. Rivers is a "franchise QB" as is Eli Manning but none are great. Non great QBs have won a bunch of SBs '00 Dilfer '01 Brady(wasn't great yet) '02 Johnson '05 Ben(wasn't great yet) '07 Eli '11 Eli '12 Flacco(though he played like a great QB in postseason) '13 Wilson
tom brady was superbowl mvp in 2001 wasnt he? franchise qb or not its not like they had geno smith out there how is eli manning not a franchsie qb? he has spend like a decade with the giants and won superbowls/ superbowl mvps russell wilson is certainly a franchise qb. dilfer/johnson/flacco ill give you. and the first 2 played on maybe the 2 best defenses of the past 25 years.
I wouldn't call that INT by Revis spectacular...it fell in his lap. Greene had more yds. rushing than Sancho had passing. That one big run scored 7 points...was the longest run in Jet playoff history and showed what a shitty tackler Cro is. Rivers does like to heave it up a few times a game...that's for sure. Sanchez didn't exactly light it up that game.
spectacular concentration after great coverage. Never said Mark lit it up but he made plays to help us win. once we got the 10 pt lead we tried to run out the clock or he could have made more plays.
I am not saying these guys were bad they just weren't great QBs. Brady was SB MVP but he wasn't quite great yet. read my post again. you can use many different definitions of franchise QBs but guys like Eli were average QBs and he didn't deserve either SB MVP he won.
Rivers would make us favorites to win the AFCE this year and go deep into the playoffs. I'm not trading the 6th pick for him but a reasonable package based on his age and salary, absolutely. _
did Tom Brady decide to retire? what's reasonable. I'm all for reasonable but he's going to want a new contract and be paid like a top QB- something he has never been.
I'm not saying Sanchez was bad that game...he did ok, but mostly because he didn't do much. There were a bunch of three & outs by our O.
The Pats have lost a lot, we've gained a lot and Rivers is an exceptional QB. I think we challenge and win the division with him, with that receiving corp. Reasonable in that it doesn't include the 6th pick and a contract that pays him what he is worth but doesn't put us in cap hell or prevent us from signing some of our core guys in the future. _
very conservative gameplan no doubt, he had 1 INT but it wasn't a killer. He had fewer mistakes than Rivers and that was really the difference. they have lost a ton but they still have Brady. I'm fine w/ reasonable, I don't think he can be acquired w/ reasonable and anything more and we'd be killing our future w/ a good, not great, QB eating away cap space.
An exceptional QB for at least the next 2 years. I'm not a win now guy, I want Mariota and for him to sit at least a year and then become a competitive winning team for the next decade and I truly believe the Pats with or without Brady take a step back this year. I'll let the GM figure out what's reasonable and not hamstring us. As long as it's not the 6th pick. _
he's never been exceptional so he certainly wouldn't be that here for 2 years. I think NE could take a step back to 11-12 wins but that should still be enough to win the division.
Good point on being able to re-sign our own players like Wilk if we acquired Rivers. I don't mind giving up the overall no. 6 if we get back their 17. You have to pay Rivers probably at least 15 which means after spending so liberally this off season we might have to cut guys like Brick.
The Ravens come to mind. But overall your point is quite valid. A franchise qb needs to be supported by a top defense 90% of the time. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
He's an exceptionally talented QB. With those WRs and defense we'd win the AFCE. I'm sorry we would. _
I'd do it in a heart beat but it seems more and more like our future is attached to the Death Ship that is Geno Smith. Glug ..... Glug ..... Glug ......
You guys just have to think about our situation. We are in a semi win now position. We are a good QB away from having the ability to make it deep in the playoffs. Rivers is a good QB. I'm not saying he's elite, but I'm not saying he is just okay. Right now, we have less than just okay options at QB. I'm torn with what the deal would be, as I would like them to draft the BPA at 6 and there will be a few great blue chip options. However, there is no question I would be happy with acquiring him if the price wasn't too bad to get him. But I still don't see how there is any chance he gets traded to us of all teams with the situation at hand. However, I guess since it's in the middle off the offseason that justifies 18 and counting pages discussing this topic lol.
