I like the idea that the Jets are trying to field a much better team this year. But I don't see it as a win now strategy, for two reasons. The first is I don't see any of the FA signings this year as bankrupting the team's prospects in 16 and even 17. (After 17 is simply too far off to make that assessment, but ftr I don't see any of that so far, either.) In other words the players signed were not signed for one year deals. Yes there will be some issues next off season, Ferguson in particular comes to mind. But I am here talking about the FA signings. None of them strike me as all in for one year deals, so win now is an overstatement of hwere the team is. Second is if Mac and Bowles think the Jets right now are a good bet to make a solid playoff run with Smith as the Qb, they would then know a lot less about football then I think they do. I could go on at length about this, but the point is rather straightforward. For good measure your post assumes facts not in evidence, which is assuming that Smith will start over Fitzpatrick. Smith Fan?
If Smith is the starting Qb next year, it doesn't matter who else than mariota they would sign in the draft. They would still be going nowhere with that turnover loving team meeting missing post game presser destroying flight attendant fighting two years from now hamburger flipping "quarterback".
As fart as Johnson is concerned, heh. I have cut back alot on my criticism of him since he hired Mac and Bowles. But he still needs to learn to keep his mouth shut. And just because he was smart enough to know he could not continue with Idzik and thus Ryan as well, that doesn't mean he's suddenly become knowledgeable about the game. He still knows less about football than most posters on this forum. he needs to keep his mouth shut more often. Much more often.
Let's not pretent we are just reaching into a big sack full of QBs and pulling one randomly. MM is one of only 2 top prospects this year. There is no guarantee he pans out, but MM succeeding has better chances than anyone else not named Wilson. So if you're planing to draft a QB, you have to get the one more likely to succeed and that means higher pick.
I'm not talking what will be in 2 years. The comparison was between MM and Geno as pre-NFL prospects, e.g. MM now vs. Geno-2 years ago. Re bolded... yes, there are players who'd have immediate impact at their positions, likely starting day 1. The problem is when you have shit for QB it doesn't matter if everyone else is #1 at their position -- you're now winning. You can buy top-5 CB or OLB or RB or WR or ....whatever.... Top players in any position become avaialble with regularity, except QB. Let me put it this way... You can BUY yourself a top-5 player at all positions, except QB. Those you must find. FYI: I'm not sold on MM and I was in "trade to get Foles" camp (for reasons we can discuss separately). But right now MM is the best available QB option. And if there is a choice: take shot at QB, or get marginally better at some other position.... fuck other positions, they are good enough already
So get Hundley then... yes, in addition to MM! Like I said, you can buy other positions, but you need to find a QB. So collect them all and start looking
Never done Pokemon so don't relate to the reference. But assuming you mean something along the lines of "you don't collect QBs".... It is what you make it to be. Finding franchize QB is the single most important thing. So if you need to be a bit unorthodox in your approach -- be it. Carry extra QB for evaluation, even if you need to cut WR-6 to do so. You don't get ahead by following the crowd.
Yeah, you get ahead by doing your due diligence in scouting and selecting a QB in which fits what you wish to do best. You don't take a QB just to take one. I don't think spending the first 2 picks on a QB would be a wise investment do you?
Few "great" quarterbacks survive behind the New York Jets '11 - present The offense was completely ignored '11 & '12 started re building in '13 and now still missing pieces to the offensive line.
If one of them becomes franchize QB? Sure would! And if another one can become a serviceable QB that you could trade 2-3 yrs later or use to move up in a draft..... I'd like that
Now you have the issue about depth on the offensive line, receivers and well as many other positions that you skipped out on because you wanted to take 2 QBs - who is going to receive all of the reps in TC between Fitzpatrick, Geno, Mariota and Hundley? Too much of a log-jam, and IF these guys don't make it you just wasted 2 picks on 2 bust QBs. I would rather draft 1 QB in the first round, and continue to build the football team. These prospects aren't that great to begin with.
OK... let's back up for a second here... My response re drafting 2 QBs was an answer to "Hundley > MM". Draft both was if our FO can't make their minds, but it's not like I'm rooting for this. Now, to answer your logistical/OL concern.... play Fitz/Geno now while evaluating Mariota and Hundley. How to avoid log-jam -- that's why OC and HC are getting paid big $$$.
Dumb, just dumb. Geno hatred is completely irrational. He has struggled to be sure, but no prospect would have had success with the inept coaching and player development, caustic environment, brain dead offensive scheme, and complete lack of weapons that Rex and his inept staff saddled QBS with. Not one. Because of the incompetence in handling offense, we do not know what we have in Geno.
Can Geno Smith be decent next year with more weapons? Lets say the Jets draft Amari Cooper. Could he be decent with Cooper, Marshall, Decker, Amaro and Kerley?
Another Smith Fan post blaming everyone but Smith for his awful play. You forgot to mention the team bus driver and the ballboys. Marty was not an awful OC by any means. It is those who defend Smih, pretending they have not seen him make too many mistakes all by himself, who are irrational.
He will never be close to decent until he learns not to fixate on his receiver and to get rid of the ball before the entire defense is about to kill him and that has nothing to do with coaching, it's a sense that you have or don't have and he has shown he doesn't have it.
I agree with Woody - that made me throw up in my mouth a little. Mariota is a project QB, just like Geno, and Geno has two years of professional experience that Mariota doesn't have.
