We don't. What has been pointed out is that he hasn't done it, at least not past the high school level. It's just one of those things that is another question mark. It may turn out that he is/becomes the best "huddler" ever.
He is supposed to be extremely intelligent, if true I would guess he can learn how to command a huddle.
At least RG3 had one good year. One more than we have seen from the QB position in the last 6 years..I'll take it.
I do have a lot of confidence in Mariota, but he is NOT RG3 2.0. That's nuts. Mariota has a higher football IQ and has a bigger, stronger build, plus his running style isn't reckless like RG3's was/is. RG3 has skinny little legs. Mariota's aren't so skinny and he has the frame to put on more bulk. Comparing two QBs because they both played in spread offenses is as dumb as comparing to OLBs who played in 3-4 Ds in college. Even though the systems are similar, the players themselves, the coaching they received, the focus of those systems, the routes used, the concepts used, and the responsibilities of the players can be radically different. I guess it's too much to expect everyone to think however. Some people just like to be mentally lazy and stereotype others.
RG3 has always been an arrogant jerk... that was his down fall IMO. If it weren't for arrogance RG3 would be a competent QB at the moment IMO. He was also drafted by a dysfunctional franchise and it was clear that he and Shannhan had their personal issues . But regardless, Mariota has shown no signs of arrogance.
Not only is RG3 arrogant as fuck, the guy STILL can't operate under center. There was nothing special about RG3 even in his rookie YR - vastly overrated by making him throw screen after screen, occasional deep pass and scrambled when the offense made him do so, etc. Until he learns to operate in the pocket, he'll never be a good NFL QB. Mariota IMO, might already have better pocket presence even though it's barely developed.
40% of Mariota's completions in the Rose Bowl game came on bubble screens. His accuracy in that game on plays where he had to make NFL type reads and throw downfield was 53%. He flat out missed guys that were wide open down the field in that game.
Can't say I disagree w/ those statistics - I do think Mariota has better scrambling tendencies then RG3, a little more patient in the pocket. I think Mariota, is a far better student of the game and is able to deal with criticism - I think that's how they are set apart. Think of it this way, I think Art Briles had more to do with RG3's success compared to the Oregon's coach and Mariota's success.
I saw the replies and responded then as follows: If Mariota is sitting at the Jets pick… Post by: legler82, Mar 2, 2015 in forum: Draft There was no angle but to post a Mariota related video in a Mariota related thread. This board is so full of extremists that when objectivity is staring in posters in the face they don't know how to react. Just because I call out what I feel are the bogus criticism on Mariota that doesn't mean I feel he is a perfect prospect. IMO the valid negatives need to be separated from the bogus ones. First the a couple of the valid negatives: -Throwing into tight windows. My take on this negative is a little bit different from everyone else's. I have no real concerns about Mariota being able to throw into tight windows; my concern is his willingness to make those throws when the situation calls for it. My fear is that he may end up being too cautious with the ball a la Alex Smith and E.J. Manuel. Note the latter ran a "pro style" offense in college and still can't or won't make those throws. -Verbalizing play calls and commanding a NFL huddle. I think I was the first to bring this up on this board. No coincidence that Mariota, himself, cited the same as one of the hardest things he'll need to work on. Now some of the BS ones IMO and there are many: -Footwork from under center. As I stated MANY times, footwork from under center is nothing more than glorified choreography that a player with great feet like Mariota can easily master. -No exposure to pro-offensive concepts. This is BS in 2 folds. First, he's technically already mastered a "pro-style" offense. A version of Oregon's offense is currently being run successfully in the pros with guys that haven't mastered it at the level Mariota has. Second, as stated several times the Oregon offense uses many concepts that are used in your traditional prostyle offense; they are just run out of spread formations. -He's a running QB. Outside of designed runs, Mariota scrambles to throw while maintaining his eyes downfield. This aspect of his game is really not talked about enough. His improvisational skills are unparalleled in this draft. Guys like Wilson and Big Ben have made a killing making plays outside of the pocket. I think that's a tremendous element to add to your offense. -Doesn't read defenses and/or go through progressions. Don't know what else to say about this but watch more film.
Even if I wasn't sure about Mariota, I would still be all for drafting him given the current CBA and what we did in FA. As they say this is a "QB" driven league NOT a DE, CB, OL, K, S…etc. The opportunity to draft this early in draft does not come around that often. Mariota at 6 may just be one of those rare scenarios where biggest need meet BPA.
For those who are on the fence about Mariota and his potential but want a QB at all costs because the position is so damn important to the success of any team ..., consider this: The following players could become available within the next two years as unrestricted free agents as their teams decide to move on with younger players for their rebuilding / reloading effort: Peyton Manning - took a pay cut this year Eli Manning - Giants will let him play out his contract (free agent next year if not resigned) Drew Brees - Saints are looking to cut cap and get younger Philip Rivers- Giants will let him play out his contract (free agent next year if not resigned) Tom Brady (you never know) Those look like some good options to me.
I'll tell you something about those valid negatives: All we have to do is go back to the NC title game and you will see this issue on full display. In regards to your bold, those 2 QBs to me are busts [that won't win you playoff games] - so again, not a ringing endorsement for Mariota. He does not anticipate where the receiver will be. Winston has that down-packed playing in a pro-style offense. This is absolutely an issue. Maybe he doesn't have the confidence to make those throws? I really don't know, but what I saw in the NC title game is a guy that can't consistently make those throws. This can be developed however. The only thing he does in regards to reading defenses is where the least amount of defenders are - that's where he will throw the ball wherever it be a screen or deep pass. They run multiple variations out of the same play. Is it man, zone, where is the blitz? He's not reading the defense because the plays are being ran so quickly, that's the point of the Oregon offense. He does not go through progressions, plenty of tape shows you plenty of times where a check-down is wide open and he decides to run it instead of having patience in the pocket. No team in the NFL is running the Oregon offense the way the Oregon HC runs it. I am sorry but this part is absolute bullshit. Eagles offense w/ Chip added in Pro Concepts, he didn't have that in Oregon. It's a movement offense by the quarterback, off the run-action, off the read-action. A lot of short, quick passes, and a shit-ton of bubble screens. Very few plays down the field with NFL passing concepts. No one cept Chip with changes I may add is running the Oregon offense - he hasn't mastered any pro style offense - please do not make things up to make your prospect sound good. Some negatives here - but he can absolutely improve each aspect.
You're embarrassing yourself, Hasty. You're getting desperate. You're wrong about Mariota and just need to accept and admit it. Peyton Manning...seriously? He needs to retire. He has little arm strength left and is only going to diminish his legacy. He would never come to the Jets and we shouldn't want him at this stage in his career. Eli sucks. In a year or two Brees will be 40 or damn close to it. Brady would never sign with the Jets. Even if he would, Jets fans would never accept him. If Rivers is a FA next year and the Jets don't get Mariota this year, then I might be interested in Rivers for a couple of years, but that's it.
There it is. Whether this is smoke or not, Mariota won't make it past 2, whether by Titans or by trade @ByJimCorbett: Ken Whisenhunt on Marcus Mariota: "If he comes to us at No. 2, he's definitely going to be the day 1 starter..I'm very impressed by Marcus."
Thing is, Peshek did this last year and it wasn't an indicator of anything. Also, you have to look at the throw/pass ratio for each team for this to even be meaningful, let alone useful, in my opinion.
Whisenhunt must be an idiot like me because I too never bought into the he "must" sit for a year or two narrative.
The NC was one game. Also I'm confused about what exactly it is you saw in the game. Did he attempt to throw into tight windows and failed or did he not attempt to throw into tight windows where you thought he should? Lastly, Smith and Manuel, at least thus far, are hardly busts. Smith, though not spectacular is solid and Manuel, has only played 2 years. Note Manuel was consciously overdrafted by the Bills to secure him for 5 years. We are not watching the same tape. The bold is "absolute bullshit". At least you didn't bring up the footwork under center nonsense.
