Go tell PFF if you feel so strongly about it. The point is not that I think the Jet OL is. I was merely countering the argument taht the Jet OL in passing was one of the two or three worst teams in teh league. We can compromise and say they were about average.
The same things were said about Trent Dilfer before he won a super bowl. ... and Giants fans trashed Eli Manning before he won 2 super bowls for them. Bottom line .... if you have a great defense, you don't need a good QB to win a SB.
Wow! Thanks for posting those links. I totally missed those, but must say I'm not totally surprised, because that's how the team often played (i.e, that they weren't coached or prepared to play). It's just further confirmation that Rex Ryan is a fraud and shouldn't be in the NFL. He belongs in the WWE.
Hey hopefully the new receivers and coaching staff can turn Geno into the franchise QB we've been looking for. Hope for the best expect the worst.
I'd probably agree that they were about average. What made Geno and the OL look worse was the horrendous play calling by MM. I don't know exactly how many times he called for a QB draw right up the middle into the heart of the DL, but it was several times where Geno took a pounding. I'm not talking 3rd and 1 or 4th and short. Several times on long yardage plays, MM called Geno's number to run right into the line. No matter who your QB is, you have to try to protect him and not let him take a pounding, something MM was terrible at doing. This reflected poorly on Geno and the OL.
Well now that Revis is making our reserved franchise QB money you guys better be happy with an "average option" for at least 2-3 more years. Our best bet would be to hope Geno evolves to at least slightly above average. I don't think a top of the line QB is necessary with a defense like ours though TBH. Just DON'T lose the game for us.
I see Rex Ryan as being like the charismatic used car salesman that does his own commercials. I like his funny personality and TV persona, I just refuse to buy what he's selling.
EXACTLY, that's what I was trying to say before! History has proven that average, or even slightly below average QB's, can win super bowls with a great defense and the right pieces around them. Trent Dilfer, Brad Johnson (Bucs SB win with Jon Gruden), Eli Manning (twice!), and going back a little further...Jeff Hostetler, Mark Rypien, Doug Williams, to name just a few. None of those guys were considered great QB's. Even Kurt Warner, who played great in helping the Rams win a SB and get to another one, was an undrafted FA who was never supposed to get a shot. And how many people consider Joe Flacco to be a true franchise QB? Remember when he won the SB and got the huge contract, people were saying he was just an average QB who rode the Ravens' great defense to a ring and is now being paid like he's an elite QB, which he's not. So, again, history shows that with a great defense, and some good pieces around the QB (Marshall, Decker, Kerley, Ivory, Powell, a solid O-line), you don't need that "franchise QB" to win a championship. Of course having a franchise QB helps, and is usually necessary for sustained success over a number of years, but for 1 or 2 years you can get by, and even win the big one, with an average or even below average QB. It's been proven.
But that's not a model for sustained and consistent success and that "Trent Dilfer won a SB" red herring is one if the most often overplayed bunch of BS ever that should be stricken from the lexicon of football jargon. Even he has admitted it himself. Yes, let's build our team around a below average QB so we can hope to somehow in one year miraculously not only make the playoffs but win all our playoff games AND the Super Bowl. That is quite a plan and something to aspire to. _
Geno is going to have to prove he can do the job. Right now I have little confidence in him to have more than a small percentage of good games as a starting Qb. As for Fitz he's injured and maybe wasn't the best choice to be our veteran Qb. I'd hate to think we are going to be saddled again with Geno for the third straight year. I don't think it's impossible he can improve but unlikely that he can be consistent. The draft to me is so unpredictable in terms of Qbs and the percentage of high draft picks who don't make it. You commit yourself to a rookie Qb and often lose games because of their inexperience and then the guy doesn't hack it. So I'd never trade up for either of the elite guys going into the draft this year. If Marcus falls to 6 I'd select him.
I understand but look at our situation... our only hope is a miraculous season. shit I think the two AFC chip runs were considered miraculous. But Russell Wilson made it twice and I think it's fair to say he's not exactly ELITE.. but he's one hell of a game manager.. that's all we need. Make a play when needed but besides that just keep it simple.
Dilfer isn't an example of model for success, but Flacco, Eli, Big Ben, and Brady are. All four won SB's without being "elite" QBs. I'd throw Wilson in there as well. The teams won largely based on strong defense and a good running game. QB was asked to make some plays, but basically, their job was to not fark anything up. Just try to move the chains.
While I agree that Qb is an overrated position the facts are that most SB teams had above average to franchise Qbs. But you can win with a game manager.
