@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@ I guess we will find out soon enough if we take Mariotta or not. I would prefer an edge rusher or WR as most of our defense and offensive line will need to be rebuilt in 3 years. I believe we are in a win now mode anyway.
Except when your front office doesn't believe he's going to be a franchise QB to begin w/. If they aren't sold on the guy, then they should not take him. QB Prospects get passed on all of the time, Mariota essentially maybe no different.
We totally agree with regards to the above. My response was to "[the Jets] do not have the luxury, like some teams (example the Packers) to draft a developmental QB." IF you believe the guy is "potentially" a franchise guy and you don't have one already, it's NEVER a luxury pick no matter where you pick or how your roster looks like.
50 pages in a little over a month, one of the most popular draft threads in a long time. This is my first comment in this thread, since I have waited to see what the Jets and other teams were going to do in Free Agency. Right now, I think it's a moot point, I don't think MM will be available at #6. Tennessee might draft him or another team will move up in the 2-5 range will draft MM. Teams know the Jets will be seriously looking at QB and won't risk the Jets getting OTC. Teams won't want to trade with the Jets because they risk the chance of losing MM. Does anyone really think Mike Maccagnan will tell another team you can have #6 if MM is OTC??......that's foolish, he would never tip his hand. If by some chance MM is available at #6, it's a no brainer you draft your possible Franchise QB. New York Fans and the media will need a little patience and not expect MM to start right away. I believe that MM can start to play in the later part of 2015's season, letting him sit a short while will be more beneficial than throwing him in Day 1, Fitz will be a solid mentor.
I agree that Mariota is not going to be available at 6. He will go to some team in top 5. What I don't understand is why we should not be the team that moves up to get him. If Tennessee does not want him we are in the drivers seat to get him. If Tennessee does want him well there is nothing we can do. If he makes it to 3 it makes sense for both the Jets and Jags to make a deal.
Oh yeah, in that case well - I have to agree w/ you on that one. Fitz can hold the fort for a year - that year should get the QB up to speed. Especially if he has great football IQ. I still believe he will be there OTC @ 6 - barring a trade. Otherwise he will be there. I think there are some premium players in the top 10, and those teams might not want to trade out and take their player. It's going to be a great draft.
That's a possibility, we just don't know how much the Jet's mgmt. covets MM. I think it was a positive sign the GM, OC, QB Coach and director of Scouting were at Oregon last week. On a side note, I'm not sold on Rey, Gregory or Beasley at #6 and Fowler should be gone. Fowler & MM are my two top targets, if they're gone and we stay at #6, I'm drafting the BPA and that's Cooper or White. Many feel we don't need Cooper or White since we traded for Marshall, I will disagree. If I can the best player to strengthen the receiving group I wouldn't hesitate. Teams that pass on the better player in Rd 1 because they believe it isn't a significant need usually regret it and don't understand the draft process.
http://espn.go.com/blog/new-york/je...agnan-will-attend-private-workout-for-mariota Bowles, Maccagnan will attend private workout for Marcus Mariota March, 19, 2015 MAR 19 1:30 PM ET By Rich Cimini | ESPNNewYork.com Mike Maccagnan already has made one trip to Eugene, Oregon, to check out Marcus Mariota. That was Mariota's pro day, March 12. Maccagnan is planning another trip at the end of the month. This time, the New York Jets' general manager will be accompanied by coach Todd Bowles. The Jets have scheduled a private workout for March 28. When a team dispatches its GM and head coach for a private workout, it usually means they're very interested in a player -- or it could be an orchestrated smokescreen. You never know this time of year. Nevertheless, the Jets are performing due diligence. So are the other quarterback-needy teams. Mariota already has worked out for the Tennessee Titans, and he reportedly has private workouts scheduled with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and San Diego Chargers. Speaking to reporters Thursday, Maccagnan declined to comment on Mariota or Jameis Winston, saying he doesn't want to let other teams know what he's thinking. He acknowledged he will attend Winston's pro day March 31, but that was it. Chances are, Winston will be picked No. 1 overall by the Bucs, but there's a chance Mariota could slip to the Jets.
^ I saw that a few minutes ago, it's Bowle's time to see MM in person. If he's available at #6, BIG IF, he would be almost impossible to pass on.
In most cases, reaching for a QB that doesn't pan out absolutely sets a team back for 3 years or so, even with the new CBA. Blaine Gabbert, Brandon Wheeden, Christian Ponder, Mike Glennon, Jake Locker, EJ Manuel and to this point, Geno Smith and their respective teams (or former teams) are clear examples. The situation in Cleveland with Manziel is an outlier. True, their contracts didn't bury teams like Bradford's did with St. Louis, but teams still have to devote time to see if their young QBs will develop.
First of all yes, if Tenn wants Mariota, this whole ball game is over. And they did have a private workout from what I understand. Still there's a good argument he is a problematic fit with Whisenhut. But the Jets will know by the Tits' pick whether there's going to be a game or not. Jville's positoin then comes into play, although for obvious reasons they are not likely to pick Mariota themselves. But someone else might want to trade up over the Jets, and the Jets also have to worry about DC. Or another team trading with Oakland who of course are presumably set with Carr. I think the Jets need to seriously consider trading with Jville to get that third pick if Mariota gets by the Tits. WHat in addition to the 6th pick would it take? Perhaps one or more players?
Assuming Bowles likes what he sees, there is an increasingly appealing argument that the Jets should not sit tight waiting for him to fall to 6. I assume that is what you are saying. I didn't want to go there before FA began, but the logic of all their other moves, and non-moves, is that this pick looks more significant than it did before FA. IMo here's why: Before FA, it was possible the Jets would be able to pick up a Qb better than the Fitz/Smith/Simms tandem. Not so much to be clear in real FA's, but since FA began the more attractive Qb trade options seem to have been all locked up (an outlier exceptoin possibly is Drew Brees who was not on the radar before FA, but I think it extremely unlikely Brees comes to the Jets). Now we know - those options proved not to be real, and Fitz is the best they could do. Fitz himself is no medium to long term answer, but he could be quite serviceable as a hold the fort guy to help develop Mariota. Meanwhile other FA moves have made the team competitive enough that the Jets next year will likely be well down the line with their first round draft pick. And that's putting aside the perceptoin that next year's draft wil not hold real opportunities to draft at Qb. The FA moves to date are not so much ones that put them in a win now position in the sense of NOT 16, 17 or later. But they do mean that an upgrade at Qb could make this potentiallly a playoff team. Finally, the best available optoin to upgrade Qb over the next two seasons is to obtain Mariota. Adding up these factors, imo getting Mariota is more important now than it was before FA began.
This makes no sense. You have to devote some kind of time to see if a player develops regardless of position. Plus the teams of the players you mentions all have the financial "freedom" to draft another QB high. Also how do you get set back when you were bad to began with. It's not like these were good teams that spiraled downwards because they drafted QBs that didn't pan out. "Set back" is just another of those terms that people like to throw around loosely w/o giving it any real thought. BTW Wheeden and Manziel were drafted 2 years apart from each other.
Plus Mariota is the opposite of a "reach". We're bad because we have no long term solution at QB. A guy as talented as Mariota is not only not a "reach" at 6, he's the Daily Double--the BAP and fills an incredible need. _
I think Mac is gonna take Mariota to start his regime. But, I feel like we're givig up just way too early on Geno
We wouldn't be "giving up" on Geno. He's going to be on equal footing with Fitz heading into camp and MM will be holding a clip board. If Geno beats Fitz out, starts and plays like a franchise guy, the Jets will have an awesome problem on their hands. If he can't beat out Fitz, or plays like crap, Mariota takes over in 2016. Perfect world for Jets fans. _
When I say Giving up on Geno is meaning were already drafting his predecessor only 2 years in. Is that really fair? If Mariota doesn't pan out I guess we'll just be drafting his predecessor as well after 2 years when he's 24 Years old. Thing is Geno is not gonna play like a 'Franchise Guy'. Only QBs to play like a 'Franchise Guy' is if they sit behind a HOF for a couple of years or is a sure fire prospect like Andrew Luck was or how somewhat Jameis is now. Mariota isn't a sure fire prospect. Other than that when drafting QBs you'd miss most of the time. Also have to take QB development in place. Do we really trust our staff into developing Mariota to be the QB of the Future? Idk.
