you thinking of 2012 with the Cards and Jags? we did overachieve in 2013 tho no doubt. getting to 8 wins was a great effort by the team and coaches, sprinkled with some good bounces. i was hoping we could manage 8-8 again in 2014, as that would have shown progress considering.. But the team managed to actually decrease in talent, especially in the secondary and oline. that's almost hard to do considering the cap and draft resources we had, and that we weren't very talented to begin with. the Jets were very talent poor in 2014, and almost barren in certain areas.
it is hard to make the playoffs when: - you play in the same division as a team thats a lock for 12 wins, relegating you to having to win 1 of 2 wildcard spots - you have been supplied with the worst crop of QBs in football by a wide margin (sanchez, tebow, smith) im not blaming just idzik, im also blaming tanny. i mean, can you really be expected to be a good team with bottom 5 skill players and a bottom 5 QB? Once we lost our elite defensive player it wasnt going to be long before the D went from elite to good or very good and that would not longer be enough to make up for such a horrible offense. rex missed the playoffs 4 straight yes. sure. but those teams still either achieved to their talent level or overachieved (the 2 playoff years and 8-8 season). think about it, what other team has had such horrific qb play and achieved more then us? you get qb play like we have and your winning 3-6 games max. only the subsection of giant homer fans here and sanchez apologists thought we were some good team.
yup...spot on.... not to mention idzik viewed 2014 as a throw away year and was rolling over the cap for this offseason and to tank for a top pick and shot at a QB. that doesnt help either.
Sanchez was Rex's boy. You can't blame that one just on Tannenbaum. He started him from day 1 and there was no competition or accountability. He had a boat load of first round picks on defense even under Idzik whose three first round picks were on defense. He had talent and squandered it.
That is very fair. can certainly blame rex for sticking with sanchez so long.... although his alternatives (tebow/geno/simms) where just as bad and also would be bottom 5 starting QBs in the league. Rex never had much talent. we did make alot of picks on defense, but most of them were awful picks (kyle wilson, milliner). if you want to blame rex for his input on the drafts thats fine too. im not defending rex, just pointing out that the teams we had the past 2 years were bottom 5 talent wise and 3-6 win type teams. we didn underachieve and if anything we overachieved when we went 8-8
I think the talent was much higher than that. Esp on defense where he had all of those picks. And Milliner wasn't a bad pick. At least it's too early to qualify that. I thought that Rex and Thurmond did a good job coaching Milliner his rookie year. They benched him and when he came back he was improved. He should have done it with Sanchez, too. You are what your record is but with below average coaching it isn't up to your talent.
I thought we would be 7-9, but only because I assumed Vick would start the majority of the season. Had I known Geno would start the entire season, definitely would have anticipated 3 or 4 wins. And that's without knowing the entire defensive backfield would get hurt.
Geno was better than Vick who didn't want to play. At least Geno went out there and gave it his best effort. And played ok the last five games. I thought we were a 7-9, too.
Why would Rex need to send the house if he has Mario, Hughes, Dareus and Kyle? What pass rushers did he have in NY? Pace? Coples? Maybin? lol
Pace has 43 sacks in 104 games as a Jet as a 3-4 OLB..........Dareus has 28.5 in 63 games as a DT. Hell Kyle Williams a DT has 32.5 sacks since 2008(98 games) , the same year Pace joined the Jets. Mario Williams has 38 sacks in 48 games and Hughes has 20 sacks in 32 games as a Buffalo Bill. Please explain why Rex would need to send the house with those guys? We can rush 4 all game and flood the secondary with defensive backs. I do expect Rex to blitz a LB or corner at times much like what Pettine did , but for the most part our front 4 will do enough in the pressure department.
There's nothing wrong with blitzing but not if you do it consistently so other teams game plan you on it. Just look at Jets numbers on 3rd and long success by opponents. It was bad. He was regularly out coached esp in those situations. The Jets D would stone opponents the first two downs and then allow big plays on 3rd.
Wilkerson, Richardson, Coples and Babin all provided good pass rushing....and without any semblance of a secondary to buy them time. with this years secondary, and Bowles propensity to blitz, i expect we'll be hitting a lot of QB's. your front 4 is capable of providing rush on its own no doubt. Rex will add heat to that fire with some blitzing as well. he plays an aggressive style, especially against weaker QB's. you can expect some blitzing, but not to the exaggerated levels many here suggest. they show blitz more than they actually do blitz, as he tries to make the pre-snap reads more difficult. sending an ILB is the most common thing he'll do, and you can expect a good amt of that.
alot of that had to do with the leagues worst secondary and no one who could cover a tight end. what are you supposed to do in that situation? not bring pressure and hope your league worst corners and safties can hold up? we had to blitz heavy last year.
Rex wasn't a good enough coach to deal with injuries to the secondary the same kind almost every team dealt with. Walls and Williams aren't superstars but in a scheme that wouldn't expose them they were adequate. These corner complaints are mostly excuses for shitty coaching. We watched the same games. I think it was his scheme more than his players who admittedly weren't that good.
Idzik didn't neglect the secondary he just didn't get the desired results partly due to injuries. Two of his 3 first round picks were Dbs. Plus his 3rd round pick in 2014 was a Cb. He tried to sign Vontae Davis and DRC but they went with other teams. He signed a decent vet in Patterson but cut him because the guy is an asshole. He got a pretty good pickup in Marcus Williams and some of that credit has to go to Rex because he started an unknown player. You can scream and yell all you want about the CB position but the facts are: he couldn't sign Revis due to (probably) bad blood between the owner and Revis and with Cro: he sucked in 2013. In 2015 after much criticism Woody greatly overpaid both of them. He basically let Idzik take the hit for that even though it's the owner who controls the purse strings. The bottom line with Rex: he had great talent on defense. A ton of 1st round picks. A make shift secondary due to injuries. Other teams dealt with injuries but he didn't. His fans preferred to blame anyone but him.
I agree. For some reason the majority of Jet fans are Rex supporters and want to blame everyone but him. The fact of the matter is, Rex seemed unable to make players better, or change his schemes to work around his players. Every year he was here, the team became less talented. The blame shifted around to Schotty, Sparano, Sanchez, Tanny, And Idzik. I guess we will see what he does in Buffalo.
Some good points, other farcical notions. Good point: Rex did not tailor his defense to the personnel he had. Farcical point: "his fans preferred to blame anyone but him..." Rex's fans, myself included, blame him for not hiding the weakness of his defense or developing a productive offense. We blame Idzik for not providing better talent on units that were talent deficient when he inherited them. Good point: "...he just didn't get the desired results, party due to injuries..." Farcical points: "he signed a 'decent vet in Patterson but cut him because they is an asshole..." Several inaccurate statements lumped together: 1) Patterson was not a "decent" vet. He was ill-suited for the role they had planned for him--being an outside CB. Patterson was best suited to play the slot. "He tried to sign Vontae Davis and DRC but they went with other teams." WRONG!! He tried to lowball two quality free agents, who, not surprisingly, said "fuck you"!! "the facts are: he couldn't sign Revis due to (probably) bad blood between the owner and Revis" Wait! Is it a "fact" when you say there was "probably" bad blood between the owner. And, when you mention no evidence to support your claim? Your statement has virtually no fact in it, beyond the Cromartie sucked in 2013. "In 2015 after much criticism Woody greatly overpaid both of them..." Overpaid Revis? He's making virtually the same money he's made for three different teams. And, really, his past performance and its impact--Revis Island with the Jets, a SB Ring with the Pats--says your assertion has no real basis in fact. Idzik to the hits he deserved. The team's talent level was virtually unchanged between his 'bargain basement' signings and draft whiffs.
what coach is good enough to overcome having the leagues worst secondary, with injuries on top of it and one of the 3 worst qbs in football as your starter? Parcells, walsh, madden, landry... none of those guys is overcoming talent that bad. what system exactly is protecting guys who cant cover? the only possible awnser is one that gets insane pressure on the qb. you arent doing that rushing 4 guys without a dominant edge rusher or 2. not to mention a D that has to always be on the field beause your QB is trash
Clark you don't know about "lowballing" or the contract offers made to Davis and DRC unless you listen to Mehta. The story I read (not from MM or Cimimi) was that Idzik targeted Davis and had an acceptable deal in place with him. But the Colts (his team) at the last minute gave him a counteroffer which he accepted. The Jets thought they had signed him. He was the best corner available in last year's free agency and had a very good season in 2014. As for DRC you heard different stories including one that Idzik raised his offer to DRC (often injured in 2014) after he indicated he would go to the Giants and it was more than what the Giants gave him. But he chose the Giants partially because his old mentor with Arizona, Antoine Rolle was on the Giants. As for Patterson he was a fall back but an experienced CB who had started and played well but had injuries. All Cbs have injuries. The thing Jets fans have to understand is that with good players on the open market esp cornerbacks there are 31 other teams interested and competition. One guy re-signs with his old team and the other prefers the Giants over the Jets. And because of this Jets fans go apeshit. The only reason Woody gave this kind of money to Revis (and both the Bucs and NEP cut Revis rather than pay him 16 mil per season-the Bucs after only one year and giving up a 1st and a 4th-NEP only paid 12 mil for one season): Woody was personally getting crushed and so he basically threw Idzik under the bus and let him take all of the blame for not re-signing Revis in 2014. And we really don't know what transpired then. There is a rumor that Revis tried to contact the Jets and he was blown off by Idzik. I find that hard to believe that unless the owner instructed Idzik not to deal with them that he wouldn't even talk to them. Cro worked off of a one year 3 mil contract with Arizona. So his value in 2014 wasn't that high. He had a good year but to give him 8 mil per and 20 mil guarantee is overpaying.
It may not be their defense we have to worry about and it may not be NE in the division we have to worry about either.
