Agreed, though Mariota could very well be the best player at our pick, factoring in positional value (Qb > OLB > WR, etc.) It just depends on what our scouts and Mac think about Mariota, whether or not they believe he could/will be a franchise Qb when all is said and done.
I did a mock last year with us trading completely our of round one and taking him in round two. Everyone hated it.
I think we can all agree, Mariota's best chance to succeed is w/ the Eagles. Last time I checked, RG3 won OROTY too - but his success in this league is undetermined at this point. That Eagles team right now, won't make the playoffs, even with Mariota. NFC is too strong, and they aren't better then the Cowboys. If the Jets can get a good pass-rusher, he produces along with competent offensive play, we should be close or in the playoffs. We should regardless be 10x better then what we were last season. Seattle built their roster w/out a franchise QB and they won the SB in that QBs sophomore yr. I don't think Idzik did a great job putting in effort also at the end of the day and completely sabotaged Rex.
I think the Eagles can make the playoffs. They have the Redskins and Giants in their division, and the Cowboys are not guaranteed to continue their success after losing some free agents and only experiencing one record above 8-8 in the past 5 years. They certainly won't make the playoffs with Sanchez, however. I also think people are underrating Chan Gailey, perhaps the 2nd best mind for the spread offense after Chip. Mariota could thrive here so long as we sit him for at least a year. Plus, we're nothing like Seattle; we just put a lot of money into players who are 29 or 30 years of age. We can't afford not to start winning this year; I think we can get to 9-7 with Geno or Fitz (potentially), but we won't have sustained success without a Qb.
If Mariota's the pick, the same argument starts all over again, only from a different, in-house perspective with the skeptics, the fanboys and cautious optimists in between. http://www.tickcounter.com/countdown/20150430120000pm/w5270/1/NFL_DRAFT_2015 42 days, 20 hours, 56 minutes, 35 seconds....
What about the other teams competing in the NFC? Seattle, Cardinals and the Rams ... 2 teams will be fighting for a wild card, you got the NFC North ... Packers / Bears / Lions .... I don't think the Eagles are better then any of those teams. The Cowboys - still have Romo, best line in the league and Dez Bryant. They also might get Greg Hardy. You think the Eagles are making the playoffs against those teams? It'll be tough. Giants might be improved as well. At the end of the day, we are still building a team - a dominating defense with a competent offense. I've said this before, but if we don't get Mariota - it's not the end of the world in regards to the QB position. The best QB in the league this year - Aaron Rodgers - 1 SB win great, but you don't need the best QB in the league to win. A Joe Flacco level player can get you there also. Which is also my point about the 2016 QBs that people still seem to not understand.
I am going into this seasons thinking Geno won't start and with the notion that we are getting a QB in the next 2 seasons.
I think you're probably right re: the Eagles. I just think their chances are better with Mariota than with either Bradford or Sanchez. And regarding the Jets, I also agree that it won't be the end of the world either way. I'm just a bid worried, because IMO the Jets are good enough to get 7-9 wins this year. We won't have a top 6 pick again next year, in my opinion, which will make it harder to grab a top Qb. We may not need a top Qb, but ultimately we should want won. Especially because we have no idea if this organization can develop Qbs; luckily we have new, unproven coaches. It's at least better than having an coach who has proven that he can't develop the Qb position.
I remember a story someone told that literally from the very first day Wilson set foot into the Seattle complex, he owned that team. They had just given Matt Flynn that huge contract and it didn't matter--Wilson was the man. That's never happened with Geno. _
yeah...even kind of the opposite, you had to pry sanchez starting spots from rexs dead fingers before geno got his shot
I agree that their chances w/ Mariota are far better then Sanchez and Bradford. Mariota and Chip are a match made in heaven. Connor Cook, Cardale Jones, Christian Hackenberg, Dak Prescott, Jonathan Goff, Gunner Kiel, Patrick Towles these are the QBs to watch next season - I think we will be in position to grab one even if we finish 8-8. We shall see though - I want a QB as much as the next guy.
Peter King was just on Michael Kay and said if Mariota is sitting there at 6 and the Jets like him even just a little bit, McGags HAS to take him. No amount of defense or weapons is going to make the Jets winners with their QB position. Said Revis could be Deion Sanders and Night Train Lane combined and will all their other moves the Jets will not win because QB is just so important in this league. Said the combo of Geno and Fitz is one of the worst QB situations in the league. Doesn't think anyone around the league thinks Geno is the long term answer. Anyone saying they are "confident" in Geno is like saying Buffalo is confident in EJ Manuel. Said the Jets HAVE to take Mariota. Also poo poos any thought of Kelly moving on from Bradford-Kelly thinks he'll be a star in his system and is not convinced his injury history will continue into the future. _
^^^ I completely agree with the above. I look at our QB situation and want to vomit. I could not agree more that our team could play to it's potential but without a good QB it won't matter. Can't pass on Mariota. He won't start this season if we are smart about it, so this season is a wash anyway most likely at this position, but if Mariota can learn the speed of the NFL and how to be an NFL QB after riding the bench for a season, it's all worth it. If not, it was still worth it to take him as opposed to letting him slip and watching him become a superstar. You cannot look at it with a hindsight perspective.
QBs don't sit just to sit anymore, those days seem to be over. If he wins the job in camp he should start, if not then he should sit.
I agree with this as well. If he shows that he is the best option at the position, and gives us the best chance to win (sigh), then he should start. I would just want our CS to have confidence in him as an NFL QB, and if not yet, that's when you'd sit him for a year to learn the transition from his college position to his NFL position, since they seem to differ in quite a few ways.
Qbs haven't had the luxary of sitting for a year as of late for a few reasons, including media and fan pressure, and the quick successes of players like Cam Newton, RG3, and Luck, etc. This doesn't have to be the case, though. If the Jets get Mariota, since we already have a new head coach and GM, we will certainly have a honeymoon period. Fringe fans will complain, of course, but in the end we may be able to sit the man for a year without too much pressure. Particularly if Chan is able to make something out of Geno or Fitz for the time being.
I don't believe in setting limits on prospects before they've stepped foot on an NFL game or practice field. Let his play dictate if he needs to sit or not.
Fair enough, though I'm not quite sure if he's ready for the NFL right off the bat. He doesn't have much experience in the pocket or dropping back, and like most rookies the game will likely be too fast for him. But you're right, starting him isn't necessarily a death sentence. I just hope that the Jets (if we get him) don't feel pressured to start him.
