I know there are a ton of needs to address in this draft; like QB, WR, OL or OLB, but I think it would be a very wise choice to pick a running back with our high second round pick. No matter who starts for the Jets this year, whether it's Geno, Fitzpatrick or even Mariota, they probably aren't going to get more than average play from the QB position. This makes me think that they could really use a young feature back, and this draft is flooded with them. If you put in a stud from the draft and pair him with Ivory, not only would it help with clock management/field position to aid (what should be) a great defense, but it would also open up opportunities for Marshall and Decker, as well as quarterback running lanes. If a guy like Tevin Coleman or Duke Johnson is available when we're picking in the second round I'd be happy if Mac went in that direction. Do you guys agree or would you rather address the OL with this pick?
Depending on who we pick in the first, I would love a RB in the 2nd. Either that, a LT, a WR, or an OLB; it all depends on who we get first, though. Either way, getting a running back somewhere in the draft is necessary given our current roster. Luckily this is one of the best RB drafts in recent memory. Lots of depth at the position, so we can probably snag someone with the 3rd pick if we forego that option at the 2nd.
Melvin Gordon/Todd Gurley/Duke Johnson I dont know if I'd love Duke Johnson with the 38th pick, but I'm running to the podium if Gordon or Gurley is available. If we traded back in round 1 a bit, I would even consider trading back up from our second to ensure Gurley.
I was just about to post about how I wouldn't mind taking Gurley in the mid first. Apparently he's projected to be in very high demand: http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap30...gurley-to-jets-vikings-possible-in-2015-draft Not sure I'd love it if we stayed put at 6 and still took him like he says though.
I disagree. While I think the Jets need to add a RB in the draft, I think they can get one in the 3rd or 4th round who will be very good. For that matter, with all the RBs likely to be drafted, there will more than likely some very good older RBs available as TC cuts. I think the Jets could go that route and then look to draft a RB next year. I wouldn't be upset if they grabbed a great prospect in the 2nd round, but would rather they take an OT prospect in round 2 if there's one there that the Jets think is worth taking. If not, I'd prefer for them to take the best WR or OLB depending upon what they took in the first round. I will be very surprised if Mariota falls to the Jets, and if he does, will be surprised if the Jets take him. If he's not there or the Jets opt to either trade the pick or opt to take the BPA, this is how I'd love to see the draft go: Round 1) BPA OLB or WR if Mariota is not the pick Round 2) BPA OT or either WR or OLB depending on what position was taken in Round 1 Round 3) OT, if one wasn't taken in Round 2 Round 4) OG, RB, or blocking TE Round 7 - Don't care, or maybe the FB Vargas if Chan plans on using a FB
I like this, but I feel like if we go RB, we should grab the RB in the 2nd or 3rd. How many elite talents are chosen in rounds 4-7? Besides Arian Foster going undrafted?
I'd have no problem with a RB in the 2nd. However, given the immense talent at the position, I think an even better value can be had in the 3rd. Will all of the following be gone before that pick: Todd Gurley, Melvin Gordon, Jay Ajayi, Tevin Coleman, Duke Johnson, Ameer Abdullah? I would guess at least one will
Aside from Gurley, who is pretty good at everything which RBs in the draft are the best at catching the ball and gaining additional yards?
I can understand your wanting to take a RB that high. There are 4-5 RBs that I would absolutely LOVE to see the Jets add: Gordon, Gurley, Abdullah, Johnson, and Coleman. I haven't seen him play, but based on what several posters on this site have said about Jay Ajayi, I quite likely would add him to the list as well. That said, I don't think we have to have an elite talent at RB, and as much as I would like to see the Jets add one of them, I don't think that is as important or would help the team as much as adding an elite pass rusher, a topflight WR prospect like Dorsett, trying to find Brick's replacement for next year, or solidifying the OL. Here's my reasoning. Ivory's the starter barring an injury or major upset. RB is the easiest position for a rookie to start, but rookie RBs often struggle with pass protection and picking up blitzes. I think we just need a RB with some hops and good hands who can be a threat out of the backfield, and who preferably can return punts and/or KOs. An elite talent would be great, but isn't essential. OTOH, Brick's play is falling off precipitously and he's due $17 million next year. Personally, I don't think he will be even worth keeping at a greatly reduced salary, and I'm not certain that he would be willing to take a huge pay cut. It isn't very safe for QBs to start a rookie LT, so I think if there's an LT or two the Jets really like in this draft, then short of passing on Mariota or trading up, they need to do everything they can to get one of them. The one piece that the Jets' D is missing is an elite pass rusher or at least a young fast pass rusher. Pace and Babin aren't scaring anyone. Neither is Coples. Carpenter may or may not be the answer at LG. Aboushi or Dozier might be the answer at RG. I'd hate to go into the season with the season hanging in the balance counting on "might" or "may be." We may be fine, or maybe even very good with those guys and a new OL coach. If Bowles and Mac think we are great, but if not, then I think they need to strongly consider taking an OG in the 3rd or 4th round. Just a few weeks ago I wasn't in favor of drafting another OG since they've drafted several over the last 2-3 years, but I thought the Jets might get Franklin or Boling, and the new regime might not like any of the OGs the team has drafted. While we may be set at the top 2 WR positions for 2-3 years, Marshall may not work out here and may only be here one year. Kerley has been a disappointment of late. Gailey likes to run a lot of 3-4 WR sets. Unless Mac and the Scouting Dept. think Evans, Enunwa, Owusu or one of their other young WRs will prove to be a revelation, I think a very strong case can be made that taking a topflight WR prospect would trump taking a topflight RB prospect. Unless the RB the Jets draft is the second coming of Barry Sanders and able to create on his own, I think it much more important for the Jets to solidify the OL, go with the RBs they have, then add a camp cut to fill out the position for 2015, then look to upgrade the position next year. Unfortunately, I think the same thing will probably have to go for the WR position, even though I'd love to add White, Cooper, Parker or Dorsett.
Offensive tackle for me. There are RBs in the third who would be pretty good. I might like Dorsett in the third, tho.
I think Dorsett might have to be taken in the 2nd. He seems to be a big riser in this process. Wouldn't even be shocked if he was gone at the bottom of the 1st.
@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@ We don't need any more Bilal Powell types. We could use an elusive open field type of RB to complement Ivory. Maybe that is why we never went after Spiller that hard in free agency.
Kerley isn't? I will agree that a receiver like Dorsett, Tyler Lockett or Jamison Crowder could complement this group well (especially one like Locket with return ability), but even though Kerley had a somewhat down year, he's a legitimate slot receiver
I'm excited to see Kerley with Marshall and a healthy Decker taking the pressure off him. We have some great pass catchers on this team (excited about Amaro too). Just hoping the QB can deliver.
