No he didn't.... Marvin Lewis was the DC and Rex was the D line coach. I can't really dispute anything else you said though. I thin Rex has some flaws but to blow him off as an overrated defensive coach is laughable and sounds like sour grapes. His act wore thin at the end and I thought he was in over his head as a head coach but he can still coach a defense and the Bills should be better with him at the helm.
Spot on. Look at what Bowles accomplished last year in AZ with all the injuries he had. His D still performed at a very high level. Rex's D didn't perform at a very high level consistently when everyone was healthy and on the field.
Buff d against our oline far more dominant then other way around. Rex never had a qb so ultimately the performance of the d was not the issue at all. Rex talks a mean game, build a bully etc. Its fun and players like him but it ran its course. Bowles played in league, not a talker, ecity is not exactly ideal place to grow up. Hires dc with little experience. Reeks of quiet confidence to me. Rex let the inmates run the prison. I could be way off but I really don't think Bowles is that way. I love that the jets are giving this man a well deserved shot, I was also happy initially with idzik so we shall see. I wish Rex all the best, he is a dam good coach and there is no need to attack him. If we fail to get Bowles a qb he will end up the same as Rex.
Good stuff. Spot on Unfortunately being critical of Rex gets the same reactionary response, regrettably. Some people act like Rex is beyond reproach...smfh
I think the Jets improved the most of the AFC East teams. As for defense, it will be interesting. What the Bills defense will look like is a question, though an exciting one. Bills defensive line is stacked and that is not just high quality, there is quantity. Guys like Wynn and Charles played a lot last year and played well. This allowed Dareus, M Williams, Kyle Williams, and Hughes to stay fresh. I am hoping that Rex's blitzes can result in even more chaos and turnovers, we normally just rushed 4.
We have a tough front 7. Only defenses with a better front 7 are Buffalo and maybe St Louis. The only defense with a stronger secondary is probably Seattle.
If we go into the season with the O-line we have right now, it doesn't matter who's our QB, they're gonna have a bad time trying to score, but then again, so will our defense shred Buffalo's and Miami's offense.
He finished 6th overall in yards per game, I read somewhere recently that a lot had to do with the fact that the offense was so bad getting first downs that they punt on average closer to the 50 yard line, so the yards it took to get to the end zone were less. I'm not saying that he isn't a great defensive mind, I'm just saying that maybe it had to do with that.
just to reiterate this Rex can keep his nice yards against stats. It doesn't seem to keep the score down so who gives a fuck other than Rex and his fan boys?
If by "end up the same as Rex" you mean fired, maybe. If you mean anything else, I disagree. I think that Bowles is 10x smarter and a better coach than Rex.
Wow. That probably doesn't have anything to do with the fact that offensive talent (particularly the offensive line) got dramatically worse every year and that our offense gave the opposing teams short fields over and over and over (and over and over and over) again. Plus, we had Mr. Pick 6 and the Genover as our two QBs.
Well, for sure each factor you mentioned had something to do with the points increase. However, last year's issues seemed more with calling blitzes on 3rd and longs and the lack of turnovers created. it works both ways: if the defense isn't take the ball away at all then it doesn't help the offense. And the Jets were, until the very end of the season, setting a record for least turnovers created. I loved Rex Ryan, but his defensive calling kinda sucked last year. And that you can't rightly blame on the offensive struggles.
Sure you can. You can blame whatever/whoever you want. BUT...how much sense does it make to have these non-NFL caliber defensive backs in man-to-man coverage virtually every down? Bad defensive calls. Lack of flexibility in calling defenses. Overreliance on blitzing.
I dispute this mentality. There is absolutely no way to tell sitting at home on TV (or even in the stadium) on most downs what type of defensive coverage scheme a team is using. What may look like man-to-man may might be a zone masked to look like man coverage. Or it might be a hybrid man/zone coverage. These coaches spend most of their time trying to figure out how to hide these coverages while play is going on. I do know this though ... at some point, if you have no talent, it doesn't matter what scheme you're in, the other team is going to move the football. And last year's defensive backfield had no talent. EDIT: I hope like hell Bowles knows what he's doing. Because if he doesn't, the most tiresome thing in the world is going to be people attacking Rex (who I know is going to have a good defense) in order to make themselves feel better about Bowles. If the Bills make the playoffs and the Jets do not, this place is going to be impossible to deal with.
The AFC East is going to eat itself this year. That probably means the Pats go and nobody else. Wild card? Good luck with that.
There's 1 team with a quarterback and 3 that still don't have one. Until that changes, the Pats will be a Super Bowl contender and the other three will struggle to make the playoffs.
