Are you saying that Brees is not a top 5 quarterback in this league?

If so, can you please name the 5 Qbs that you would rank better than Brees?

If Brees was a few years younger, I'd be all for it.

But then, the Saints probably wouldn't be shopping him if he was a few years younger.

I understand. He's obviously slowing down ... Didn't even pass for 5000 yards for the first time in the last 4 years (4952).

Brees only if he wants to take a paycut and not for the 6. There is a thread over in the main forum about "same old jets" Trading two years worth of firsts to get Brees in here and put a hefty mortgage on the cap and the realistic possiblility that we might not be able to resign Wilk, Sheldon, etc. So that we could take 2 shots at SB at the cost of another 4-5, 40 seasons of mediocrity is silly. The jets have got to use both fa AND the draft to make this thing work.

After the top two it's kind of splitting hairs on those next 5.

Brees would put us in division contention, especially with the guys the Pats have lost

Our defense is as complete as it has been in years. Brady will be tested this year by all three division opponents. We have a couple of pieces missing that with any luck, will be addressed in the draft. What we don't have is a QB... and there are not enough elite QBs to go around. If one becomes available, and the rest of your team is ready to win now, you take him.

I think trading for Brees is a no Brainer and, what's more, could very well be accomplished at a reasonable cost if both parties are interested and motivated to do so. The Saint's are clearly in rebuilding mode evidenced by their recent unloading of prime talent. Under these circumstances, it really doesn't make sense for them to keep Brees and his contract. Give them (or possibly swap) our 1st round pick and offer them conditional picks for the next year or two. Brees has just crested his prime but still has plenty of "greatness-on-demand" left in him for at least the next two years if not more. Be it by trade or draft, there is no better player or more "proven" opportunity available to put us in position to succeed at and against the highest level of competition.

As far as our defense is concerned, our best, most gifted players are either in their primes or cresting (Revis & Cro') and barring serious injuries, there's no reason to doubt that ours will be among the best in the league. We have a more than solid running game which will only improve with the addition of Brees and all of what he brings to the game. (Recently cut Saint's RB, Pierre Thomas, even with his mileage and injury history, the frequent clutch performer and good YAC machine would be like adding another, better version of Powell.

Two years from now, however the prospect of star players like Revis, Cromartie, Marshall and Brees himself shining as brightly as they can today, while possible, seems less than likely which reinforces the belief that we should commit to operating under a win now strategy. And just the thought of a true #1 QB like Brees throwing to a true #1 WR in Marshall, to a marginal #1 WR perhaps but one of the best #2 WRs with Decker, Amaro, Kerley and the rest of our receivers stirs the imagination. Brees is historically one of the most accurate passers in the NFL and his completion percentage alone will make such a huge difference when I think back to last year and all the stalled drives and failed 3rd down conversions due to Geno's struggles to complete passes or worse, mistakes in completing them to opposing defenses. Even a Brees at 75% spending the majority of the time in game management mode and occasionally hoisting/connecting with the deep ball several times per game would be a huge improvement for us.

The balance of the remaining pieces needed are few. The O Line could use some reinforcement and it would be nice if we could find a real pass rushing specialist. Based on the moves we've seen the new FO make thus far, is it so far fetched to believe that these last two holes couldn't be filled through the draft, trade or free agency?

Wilkerson is a deal breaker he's too young and too good.

Take away Wilkerson and its a point we can begin to debate

When Favre came to the Jets, I remember how many people thought it was a bad deal (back on another message board).
My thoughts on getting Brees is the same as it was when I was in favor of Favre. When BF came to the Jets, he immediately made the offense a threat. The culture change was immediate. His swagger alone made the other younger players step up. He was a HOF player and everyone around him knew it. Up until his injury, he made a difference that season. Remember - He then went on for 2 more seasons in Minnesota. Came damned close the year after leaving us to making one more trip to the big dance.
I would take 2 years of Brees in a heart beat. It would be my hope that in the process the Jets are immediately setting their sights on drafting a QB this year or next. In the mean time we would rattle the hell out of the AFC East.

Man if we had Brees, we'd be instant SB contenders. We always had a playoff defense with a practice squad offense
