The jets now appear to be in a unique position to try a rather different base defensive arrangement. they have 3 starting caliber CB's (or at least 3 being paid like they are) and a lot of versatile d-lineman and pass rushers good at stopping the run. its highly likely depending on opponent that the jets run a base nickel defense with an extra DB on in lieu of another front 7 player. in fact I imagine a majority of this teams reps will include an extra DB regardless of what is considered our base D. picture CB- Revis S- Pryor S- Gilchrist NCB- Skrine CB- Cromartie and then we use an assortment of lineman and linebackers to make up a front 6 of multiple arrangements. RLB- Coples/Enemkpali WLB-Davis MLB- Harris DT- Richardson NT- Snacks DE- Wilkerson SLB- Pace/rookie or WLB- Davis MLB- Harris RDE- Coples DT- Richardson NT- Snacks LDE- Wilkerson or WLB- Davis MLB- Harris RDE- Coples DT- Richardson LDE- Wilkerson SLB- rookie/pace or a number of other mix and matches. thoughts?
it's very possible we'll see a lot of Nickel.. against less physical offenses like the Patriots, you can probably expect it even..
This Grantland piece on the 3-3-5 is pretty good. Gives some flavor/history to what we'll see next year (I think).
Damn, this sounds perfect for us. Particularly with our two safeties who have the right skillset (I believe).
Coples will no longer be asked to "attempt" to play LB & be moved to the line where he IS Most effective... & don't forget about Allen, he's a tweener & could be used in the box.
Bowles ran the most dime personnel by far last year...expect 6 DB's meaning 4 corners and 2 safeties and sometimes 3 corners and 3 safeties....
That's a surprise to me - To my knowledge, Hank Stram employed 3-3-5 triple stack during his championship run at KC waaaay back in the ancient times. He convincingly thrashed Bud Grant in Superbowl IV with it. That happened in 1969. Moreover, I don't know what constitutes as 'traditional' 3-4. The 0-tech line up is but one flavor of 3-4; namely, Fairbanks/Bullough 3-4. Bum Phillips certainly didn't run it that way, and I don't think Bud Wilkinson was tied to the big 3 linemen lining up and controlling 2 gaps. [He is the ancestor of 3-4, so to speak.] ========================================================== Yeah - 3-3-5 has been my 'pet base defense' for the past few years. I've been studying that myself for some time. You can even find my post about the suggestion involving 3-3-5 as the base defense somewhere in this website.
I would add that Rex used the 3-3-5 to perfection to beat NE a few years back with Eric Smith lining up in the traditional LB areas. Unfortunately that seemed to be the only game where he used it as a frequent defensive set.
