Guaranteed money is irrelevant to a QB you aren't going to cut. Guaranteed money is all about how much will it cost a team if they cut the player. Brees cap hit and cost will be $20 mil if he is on the roster regardless of whether it is guaranteed or not, and if they want out of that so they can start rebuilding before his contract expires they will trade him because they aren't cutting a QB like Brees. And they didn't overpay Brees; it's almost impossible to overpay an elite QB.
According to Sportrac his 37 mil signing bonus was pro-rated and he is owed around 27 and 25 in 2015 and 2016. No way you can take on that salary.
There are no guarantees for future value in draft picks. We are the poster child for draft fails, yet we still talk about future value. Peyton Manning is not a good example because he is on the verge of retiring and will be 39 at the start of the season. If he were 36 (like Brees is now) and we had 2-4 years left of solid QB play, then yes, I'd do it in a heart beat WITH the team we have now. In a few years, IF a QB we draft right now starts to hit is stride (an enormous IF), will the rest of the team be as loaded as it is today??? Who the hell knows... with the contracts the way they are now, then probably not. We will be talking about how our great QB is wasted on a team with no talent. All I know is with the moves we made this offseason, our team is a QB short of being a legit contender right now. Put it this way... would you give up your #6 this year to be favorites to win the division ever year for the next 3? Get Brees now, and make a run now.
I agree it is almost impossible for a team to trade for him; I'm addressing the idea that they wouldn't trade him because of what they paid him up front. If they want out of what they would have to pay him in the next couple of years they aren't going to not do it because of what they paid him up front.
If those stats from Sportrac are accurate he still has 52 mil left from his 2012 $100 mil deal. He isn't going to take a pay cut to come to the Jets. Those financial figures make it prohibitive to trade fot him even if the Jets were willing to give them substantial compensation.
We would have to restructure by guaranteeing a portion of his remaining base salary and extending him. He would get the remaining signing bonus of $15million from the saints, not from the jets.
I would love Brees here. Jets automatically become a contender this year even if the window is short.
If that's the case it might be financially feasible. But would the Saints agree to that. Or are they obligated to pay off the signing bonus.
His contract is back loaded... Look at the base pay structure. Signing bonus is owed but by trading him, the saints are not responsible for his base salary. If anything, the team trading for him will not want to take on that salary unless he restructures. The incentive for Brees is by restructuring, he gets more money guaranteed to protect him from injury. For an 36 yo QB, that is huge.
I strongly disagree. IMO that's very short-sighted thinking. IMO you don't pass up a potential franchise QB that could lead you for 10-12 years for a 36 year-old QB who doesn't play well in the cold. At 36, his skills can deteriorate overnight and he will be more injury prone. Even if Mariota isn't there at #6 or the Jets don't like him, they could still get a stud pass rusher or WR, or possibly trade down and get their future LT. I think the whole idea of trading for Brees is nuts. I wouldn't do it for a day 3 pick. There's no way I'm giving up the #6 pick in the first round or the #5 pick in the second. No way. If you trade for Brees it means you wasted cap space and a draft pick on Fitz. It also means that even if Mariota is still there, there's no way the Jets would take him, because they aren't going to carry 4 QBs on their roster, and cutting Geno at this point would be dumb. Then there's his huge contract and trying to fit it in without giving up a lot of guaranteed money or taking a big dead money hit on the cap would be extremely difficult if not impossible. Trading for him, might also make it impossible to re-sign Mo or Richardson.
There are no guarantees that Brees would stay healthy or play well in NJ, either. Your reasoning is extremely flawed imo. You're mortgaging the team's future for a huge gamble for the next couple of years. That's a loser bet.
as much as i would like this, there is no way in hell this is happening. even if he was available, we'd have to give A WHOLE lot more to get him
If you don't think that Brees will put you over the hump, then NO it doesn't make sense. If you think the Mariota will be a franchise QB that can take you to the SB in the next couple of years, then NO it doesn't make sense. I think that those that want Drew Brees believe that the trade will make us good enough to make a run and don't think our future QB is in this year's draft.
if we didn't get marshall, revis, cro i would take mariota. we're in win now mode, i'd say make the best of it. also a franchise qb can change the course of where the team's direction for the next couple of years
Just like the Mark extension that basically got him fired and all the other bad contracts he signed. Including the Suh deal.
