Macc is in discussions with his agent as I type this. Macc is offering Fireman Ed 4 yr, $40M with $35M guaranteed.

I liked Ed.... years ago! But, if he was a TRUE JET FAN, he would never had QUIT.
Listen, I am a JET FAN and they have sucked A$$ for a very long time. We deserve better.
But, I would NEVER quit on them...NO MATTER WHAT! I bleed GREEN.
It does no matter, whether the are 12-4 or 4-12. NOW, FIND US A QB!!!

He didn't quit being a fan.. he was sick of being harassed by idiots inside the stadium so he stopped leading the cheer. He still goes to the games.

And the whole "he is a Dolphins fan" nonsense has about as much credibility as people who said that our billboards would "scare away all the good GM and coaching candidates and make free agents not want to come here"… how did that work out?

It doesn't matter! idiots or not. Many of my friends are Giant fans and I have been harassed time and time again. Do I stop being a Jet fan? NO! Screw the idiots and be who you are.

I agree that the crowds are ridiculously dull, It's somehow become that the people who DO scream out the chant are the minority

when the team is bad the atmosphere sucks. the last few years have been like the early-mid 90s. it's been a long time since we missed 4 straight postseasons. If we are good the atmosphere will improve whether Ed is there or not.

I remember how loud it got when Revis was introduced after his holdout in 2010, I expect a similar scene opening day/night

What is it with all the "fuck ed" and "he quit" crap? The way I remember it he decided to stop being "fireman ed" because he was getting harassed and had just about been physically assaulted by the fanbase. How many of you supposed die hard Jets fans would take a beating for this team? I don't mean that figuratively folks.... I mean allowing someone, or a small group, physically beat on you!

Maybe I'm just a "bad fan" but my fandom has its limits and bring physically assaulted, or allowing my friends and family to be at risk for physically harm for this friggin team, is one of those limits. I don't blame him one bit for what he did. As was previously mentioned, he still goes to the games, but he goes without calling attention to himself. I just don't understand why people have this hatred for him taking this course of action. It all comes across like envy at his former prominence and kicking someone while they're down....

Edit: All that said, I don't personally care if he "comes back". It's his decision. If he wants to resume being an unpaid cheerleader then great, if he doesn't then fine. And if the Jets want to pay him then Congrats to him for getting from cash...

It would never happen but I'd love to see NFL fans take a few ideas from Soccer fans. Not the boorish side of soccer fandom but the more along the organic way that fans have become a large part of the game with their chants and TIFO banners. That being said, you need actual fans who are at the game to activly root for the Jets to win and not just some random people who are there because their buddy at the office gave them tickets because he couldn't make it on Sunday. Until the Jet Fanbase once again consists of people who are at the game to openly and loudly cheer for THEIR team to win it doesn't really seem to matter if Ed is there or not.

I would stop going to games, football is exciting unlike soccer so we should be watching the game and not doing silly signing and chanting all game long.

It isn't that.. he was starting to feel unsafe.. it wasn't his friends who were giving him shit - it was random Jets fans trying to assault him in a bathroom and projecting their anger for the teams shitty performance on to him. That is absurd. This type of crap has to stop at some point. It is a football game - not a gang initiation.

you mean like the J-E-T-S chant and D-Fence chant that this whole thread is based on? I'm not saying sing along the entire game, I'm talking about the passion that those fans have at the games. The stadium has been dead quiet for a few years And I don't think Ed has anything to do with it. I'm guessing it has more to do with people going to the game that aren't really Jets fans. I have been in the same seats at the new place since it opened. There are only 2 guys that I know by sight in the 50 seats around me. Every game it seems it's a whole new bunch of people, most of whom have a slight (if any) interest in the game. The kicker is if the people are into the game and cheering it's for the opposing team......

The J-E-T-S chant is very quick, we aren't doing it all game and the DeFense chant is stupid. when an opposing O is on the field we need to make noise not yell stupid chants.

the new Stadium hasn't helped but it's been more about losing than that. we had good crowds in 2010 and have had some good ones in other years when we haven't been awful('11 and '13).

so then why keep going to games if he feels unsafe? that was a poor excuse.

there is NO reason anyone should ever get physical w/ him or anyone else at a game but I don't buy that excuse when he continues to go to games.
