It was the perfect pro day. Enough doubt crept in to ward off Tenn and Washington to leave him sitting there at 6 for your New York Jets. Had he blown away a silly workout in shorts and tee-shirts the Titans or Skins might have taken him. And now the price isn't steep enough for Cleveland to drop 2 number 1s on him. Perfect day. _
Why would you want to draft ANOTHER backup QB. We have like 4 of them. Grayson is Kellen Clemens with a worse arm. _
NP. They do a good job. They're all ex-NFL and working hard at it giving a fair assessment. It's not ESPN Horseshit. The NFLN Draft coverage is a little outside the typical talking head babbling bs sports coverage nowadays. They gave the pros and cons. None of them are sayin that they're the bottom line, and all admit that it's not an exact thing. They admit they're not always right. Nobody is. But some people just want hear what they wanna hear
From McShay after today's pro day: The Bucs (No. 1 overall pick), Titans (No. 2), Redskins (No. 5) and Jets (No. 6) should all be considered in the mix to draft Mariota. All of those teams had their general managers in attendance on Thursday, and they make sense in terms of draft order and positional need. But the team that intrigues me most right now is the Rams, current owners of the No. 10 overall pick. My biggest takeaway from the trade that sent Nick Foles to St. Louis and Sam Bradford to the Philadelphia Eagles was that it could open the door for the Rams to move up to draft Mariota. I don't have any inside info on that, and I haven't heard anything, but it gets interesting when you connect the dots: They're now free of Bradford's huge contract, they have a good bridge quarterback in Foles, they added a 2016 second-round pick and they have a good, young roster that is more equipped to take the hit resulting from the loss of the multiple draft picks it'd take to move up to draft Mariota. Lastly, I know from talking to people around the organization last season that they had some interest in Johnny Manziel because of the added dimension he could bring to their running game. It's no secret Jeff Fisher wants a physical dimension to his football team, placing an emphasis recently on building up the offensive line and defense. Mariota could likewise bring a running element to the quarterback position, and he's a much better, more polished and cleaner prospect than Manziel was coming out of Texas A&M. Again, I don't know that the Rams are interested, and they didn't have much of a contingent at Mariota's pro day. But I do think they're a team to keep an eye on as we look for possible landing spots for Mariota.
I think he actually said that before the pro day started because I heard that on ESPN radio about 1:00 pm. But yes, the Rams concern me. _
After seeing his pro day I won't be all that upset if we pass. I would hope though that we could trade with Cleveland for their 12, 19 and a future pick if we do. I realize that's asking too much but they are the type of team you might get it from.
I wouldn't hold much stock in a pro day. I'm not gonna give all the examples, but there have been one too many times people make a mistake and skip on a QB because of a bad pro day...... Teddy Bridgewater ring a bell?
I don't know where else to post this but it looks like Tennessee is stocking up on defense. Perhaps so they can take Mariota second overall and build more defensively in the later rounds?
That's the only one that does and only because they brought it up incessantly yesterday to make a comparison to how bad Mariotta was doing although I'm sure there must be a couple of others.
Everyone says pro days don't matter, well they do in many respects. The difference between Mariota and Bridewater is this. Mariota played in a system conducive to helping him hit open recievers and less on presnap reads and really pushing the ball. Unless Mariota gets better, he will be easy to defend. Take away the run game and make him beat you deep. Bridgewater has a better arm and can throw deeper. So yeah when you have a pro day and teams are questioning your arm, you can't go out and fail to impress in the area theyre questioning.
His entire premise is that they acquired Foles to play until Mariotta is ready; Foles isn't a option in this scenario.
They say it doesn't matter in regards to looking great throwing in a tee and shorts with no defense because that isn't what a team should be basing their decision on just because a QB looks good in that non-competitive environment. Of course if you can't make those throws in that environment the alarm is credible.
That's kinda my point. Im still on the record of saying I think he could be a good qb, but hes not a finished product. He needs a lot of work, but hes smart. Thats what I like.
On this Rams angle... WHen I first heard about the trade with Philly, I mentioned that the Rams might be positioning themselves to draft Mariota by trading up. But that was on the angle that combining Foles with the 10th pick would be more attractive than Foles with the 20th, very much so. But the notion that Foles would not be part of the deal? What would the Rams then put in the package to make someone take it? I am not saying that means it's not something that could be done, because perhaps they could trade with one of the teams above the Jets who likely is not interested in a Qb, like Oakland. But then why would the Rams want to end up with both Foles and Mariota? I don't see that. All discussions about Mariota range from letting him take maybe a year to get ready to start, but not more than that. A top Qb prospect in today's league should not require more time than that. Meanwhile Foles is only 26 and imo is somewhere between 10 and 15 as an NFL Qb. You sit a guy like that his second year on the team? I don't think so. So imo either the Rams attempt to package Foles to trade up, or they are not going to move on Mariota.
One other thing about the Rams and Foles - I think Foles is better suited to their O than he was in Philly. I heard a rumor he had asked out from the Eagles, which to me makes complete sense. But in St. Louis he's in an offense that he fits into. Meanwhile the Rams have eliminated concerns about Bradford's health and his contract. The Rams also were a compettive team last year with mediocre Qb play. Why not keep Foles and see if they can't fill some of their other holes? In their division they have to worry about the Cards and Hawks, but the Niners look very ready to have a down year or three. I think they keep Foles and see where he takes them.
The Rams have multiple draft picks to move up with which are more valuable than Foles. The eagles had to GIVE a draft pick just to get rid of Foles in exchange for an injured, overpriced QB, but now that he is on the Rams he is somehow worth the difference between drafting in the top 5 and drafting 10? That doesn't make any sense.
