Much is made of system quarterbacks who throw an inordinate amount of screens and in this case, only Hundley fits that bill. Both Winston and Mariota come in under average in percentage of screens thrown. - With that, Hundley threw downfield in the 10+ yard range significantly less than both of the other QBs. Just about 16% of his passes were in the critical 11-20 yard intermediate zone and only 10.6% of his passes made it past 20 yards.
Before my time. Guys these days are different. To me most Cali QB's seem way too laid back for the NFL. Add in the fact that Hundley is basically Tebow without the hype and Id stay far far away. 15 years ago he'd be a 7th round flier.
I watch a lot of the Pac 12 Hundley blows...makes a ton of mistakes. He should convert to running back or TE
I know I am in the minority here but I actually like Hundley and would be pleased if we drafted him in the 3rd round. He absolutley cannot come in and start as he needs some serious polishing, but I like his footwork, he is a great runner, and I think he has a pretty solid arm.
I like his character. He's charismatic and he seems Wilson-like in his enthusiasm especially in the throwing segment at the end.
Nah at this point he's slipping and seems to be probably the 5th to 6th guy at this point. Id pass on every QB whats the point of wasting a pick on a developmental QB pick a position player get depth in our LBS corps, thats proably one of the weaker areas on our team.
I'm still really liking Grayson. Could probably get him or Petty in the third. Both could sit at number 3 for most if not the whole rookie season. If we're not impressed with their ability to be a starter at that point, look into how Cook, Jones and Hackenburg have improved. Bonus is we have a cheap backup QB.
I don't he is elite or even good. Watched a few of UCLA games and he is unimpressive. I would hate if the Jets took him in any round. I thought highly of Tajh Boyd and he won a ton of games in college but laid an egg once the big boy pants were put on.
I like his toughness.. his willingness to stand in there and deliver a strike. Athletically he is all you want and more- he can make all the throws necessary and has the ability to do damage with his legs. His weaknesses are fixable. It reminds me a little bit of a young Chad Pennington. When he was a rookie/even year 2, he was overthinking things and taking too long. I think even the coaches at the time made mention of that. Once he relaxed and trusted himself he was fine. I could see that happening with Hundley. If we took him in the second round I think that would be a good selection. Especially if we let Fitzpatrick and Smith take the lumps this year while Hundley is groomed and learns. That could be a great option for the future.
I don't really get that analysis- it seems almost agenda-driven or something. Which makes me question how they compiled the figures (but that's another discussion) For starters "only" 10.6% of his passes made it past 20 yards? umm.. that's more than the golden god Mariota himself and .1% less than Winston, so I don't think that's a criticism. Secondly, it strangely acts as if throwing short passes is a bad thing? The ability to throw and complete a lot of short passes is a very important skill for a QB to have. Sanchez was weak in the short passing game, Brady is the best in the business and probably also throws more of them than anyone. Not only did Hundley throw a lot of short passes but he was also extremely accurate in the short passing game- so no wonder they played to his strengths: ^^from 6-10 yards he is staggeringly higher than Winston and Mariota. Those are typically the tough, important throws to make. Think 3rd down and 7! And lastly- as I showed in the other thread, if Rotoworld has an agenda or point to be made, it's possible they are making the wrong one. Bridgewater and Carr's breakdowns last year looked close to Hundley's and they were fine. Where Johnny Football's breakdown was a damn mirror image of GASP! Mariota. To the best of my knowledge they didn't do this analysis in prior years unfortunately to offer a clearer benchmark. Honestly, though it makes sense that Mariota and Johnny football's breakdowns were similar- the styles were similar, spread them out and sneak a guy deep, especially effective if the QB can do damage with his legs and the safeties have to move up to account for that. (as was the case with both QBs) - - however I don't necessarily think it means either guy will be a failure, even Johnny 8-ball, it's just different styles than a Hundley, who I think can be effective as well.
He can turn out to be the greatest QB that ever played the game but that doesn't change his college tape. His tape shows a guy that is not a quick decision maker and holds on to the ball entirely too long. Those are HUGE flaws IMHO. Those negatives are why he is not talked about in the same vein as Winston and Mariota even though from a phyical and character standpoint he is comparable. So bump to your heart's content.
I also think learning from Fitzpatrick would be especially valuable for a kid like Hundley. All the tools are there he's just a smart kid who might be too smart for his own good, thinking too much. Learning from a Fitzpatrick, another smart guy but seasoned, will show him that at some point you need to let go of the over thinking and just react.
