How many of them had Drew Brees? On the flip side, Bowles could be terrible anyways, which could cause the Jets to "rebuild" again in a few years anyways. Not sure why it matters who the coach is? Like if we still had Rex Ryan you'd be ok with the trade?
if we had rex and were coming off an afc championship id be ok with the trade with an unknown at coach, new pieces, and coming off 4 wins, not a chance im ok with it
Bowles will probably be a decent coach. That doesn't mean anything at all when you are coaching against the likes of Belichik. The Jets need to have a better roster over time than the Pats or the coaching just doesn't matter. Even if they can beat the Pats now and then as Rex did it just doesn't matter. The Pats always have a core of good 24 to 29 year old players with a few guys older than that chipping in. Belichik doesn't care about keeping the older guys around. He just wants them when they are part of the young core and until they get expensive outside the core, then he trades them. Like clockwork. That's why the Pats are the best NFL franchise in terms of wins over time. You can't cut corners and try for quick fixes. It just doesn't work. That's why the Jets are a mediocre NFL franchise over time.
Lets not fool ourselves here. The Pats have been good the past 12 years because of Tom Brady, not because of a good core.
The Pats have been good because of Brady and Belichik and the way they manipulated the roster over time. The year Brady got hurt Matt Freaking Cassell went 11-5!
True. There are always risks to any strategy. I think it boils down to what your timeframe is. I see Brees as a three year player...same as Revis, Cromartie, Harris (maybe), and, we'll likely have Mo and Richardson together for 2-3 years. You have a defensive minded coach with a good pass rush and a good secondary. Draft an edge rusher, and you potentially have a championship caliber defense that you can keep together for three years. I wouldn't want to waste that waiting for Marcus Mariota to develop. I would go for it with a legit QB for a 3-year window, IF the opportunity presented itself. I'm looking at a situation in New Orleans where Payton is probably leaving next year, Brees knows it and is refusing to take a paycut to make it possible for the team to rebuild. He's essentially saying "trade me, now". New Orleans ownership is a mess. Maybe they dump Brees for a 2nd round pick and change. That's a chance I'd be happy to take. Heck...let Mariota sit behind Brees for 3 years, then take the reigns.
they were 16-0 the year before, 5 games is a HUGE difference and did it against a far weaker schedule. Miami went from 1 win to 11 wins. Brady is why NE has been great, Bready is why BB is still a HC.
That and the cheating. And of course Tom Brady. And a GM who doesn't think he can play scrubs at Cb because it's not an important position.
for me it is irrelevant if brees is here for 1 year or 4 years. if the team around him isnt good enough to get to the superbowl you just threw away a couple first rounders for him thats a horrible trade. if this was year 2, and i knew what we had with bowles/this secondary/marshall decker, etc.... then i might go for it. but right now id be adding brees to a 4-12 team with a totally new regime and some bgi free agents. i have no idea how that is going to work out. adding a win now QB who is 36, is unproven in the cold, and more susceptable to injury/decline. thats just insane risk with all the unknown. especially for a guy only here 3 or 4 years max. the upset is way too much of a reach/unknown and the cost on the risk is enormous
I think you're overrating the roster. The 2010 roster had the best offensive line in football. This roster has a better defensive line, but the offensive line isn't anywhere near 2009 or 2010; I'm not even sure the offensive line is in the top half of the league anymore.
@nfldraftscout: It feels like we always say "next year's draft will be better", but if I'm the Saints, I'd entertain Brees for a 2016 1st RDer I'd do it That's Matt Miller btw (his Twitter handle doesn't have his name in it)
Nobody is saying Drew Brees isn't great, but his age and the fact that he wouldn't be playing in a dome here are legit question marks.
