This isn't baseball. Teams don't get 10 years to draft and develop players. The Jets have made great strides, but the biggest question mark is still unanswered - QB. Trading the #6 pick for Drew Brees wouldn't be going "all in". He's under contract for two more years. If it doesn't work out you move on at that point. If we assume at Mariota is gone at #6, then the question is would you want Fowler or Drew Brees? Its unlikely the Saints will trade him anyways, but if the asking price was the #6 pick, I'd jump right in. In 2-3 years we'd be without a QB, but that would also buy the Jets time to find another one. Right now Jets don't have one and cant find one either.
The 2009 team, with a rookie Rex Ryan, new system, and rookie QB made the AFC championship and had the top rated defense in the NFL. In fact, the last three rookie head coaches for the Jets have all made the playoffs in their first season. I think you are overrating new systems.
No one said anything about 10 years to draft and develop players, but it would be stupid to trade the #6 pick for a 36 year-old QB. Period. At that age, players become more injury prone, and their play can deteriorate badly overnight. Brees doesn't play well in cold weather. This team isn't ready to be a major competitor yet, even with Brees. New offensive and defensive systems are being installed. The OL is still a big question mark. We have a rookie HC. You make it sound like we're trading a 7th round pick for Brees and thus it wouldn't the team or set it back any if he didn't play well or things "didn't work out." Losing the caliber of player that the Jets can get at #6, will hurt badly, especially if Mariota is sitting there and could develop into the franchise QB for this team for the next 10 years. To say that the Jets can't find a QB is flat out wrong and idiotic. If Mariota falls to #6, the Jets could very well have found their franchise QB. You don't pass up the opportunity to find a long term franchise QB to trade for a 36 year-old QB. It most certainly would be going "all in." You don't trade away a #6 draft pick for an old QB unless you're thinking you can make it to and win the SB with that QB. Your reasoning is utter nonsense. Then there's the cap hit. There's NO WAY the Jets could fit Brees contract in. They'd have to cut several big players like Mo and Brick, plus several others.
Saints just traded away Pro Bowl guard Grubbs for a 5th round pick.. and the Saints fire sale continues
What happened with the Jets isn't the "norm." You sound as if you're very young and haven't been watching the NFL for very long. Usually with rookie HCs and new systems, it takes time (a year or so) for the teams to learn the systems and gel. The Jets still have a lot of holes and questions. To just assume that they're gonna be in the playoffs is beyond idealistic and naive.
Wish we would have done it. http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.co...de-ben-grubbs-to-chiefs-for-fifth-round-pick/
exactly, look all the new head coach last season, and how that worked in each situation. even if we ARE good under bowles, it isnt a given, and not something worth risking first rounders to go all in on in year 1
You know what grinds my gears? I made a thread about Drew Brees and WW85 moved it NFL forum although I thought it could be great for a Jets speculation thread with everyone rampantly discussing in it. http://forums.theganggreen.com/threads/saints-are-fielding-offers-for-drew-freaking-brees.83603/ But why is this thread still around here??
Word is Kenny Stills being shopped too. Probably not realistic for us but that would be a nice deep threat.
Honestly, I am not getting all that excited. I think I am pretty sober and realistic about where this team is right now. I agree that this is hardly the time to go all-in. The team just went 4-12. As I mentioned, I wouldn't do the deal. It's not even available, and if it were to happen, it would be a mistake. At the same time, I can understand the reasoning behind it and why the move would appeal to fans. If you have an elite QB, you at least have a fighting chance, no matter how bad everything else around that QB is. While this team has a ways to go, it is not as talent-starved as other rosters in the league with comparable records.
Graham traded just traded their left guard and now stills is on the block. Folks Brees is available make no mistake. The saints Are blowing it up. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Ravens went to the AFC championship in 2008 with a rookie coach and QB. 49ers went to NFC championship in 2011 with a rookie coach Colts and Redskins in 2012 with a new head coaches and rookie QBs made playoffs Saints went to playoffs in 2006 with a rookie head coach and a free agent QB named drew brees QB is the most important position in football. Drew Brees, who turned 36 in January, is still a top 5 quarterback. Teams can have 8 game swings in just one off season. Hell the dolphins went from 1-15 to 11-5 with a rookie head coach and a QB named Chad Pennington. Tons of examples actually. You just sound as if you are old and living in the past.
If Mariota is sitting there at #6, I think its a different discussion. I am operating under the impression that he will not be there. Tom Brady and Payton Manning say hi. So does Brett Farve in 2009 when he took the Vikings to the NFC championship. Kurt Warner took the Cardinals to the superbowl at 36. Brees' game has not shown signs of decline. The Jets have a top defense with the addition of Revis (and hopefully Cromartie). They added a top 15 WR in Brandon Marshall. I am not sure how this team wouldn't be ready to win RIGHT NOW with Drew Brees? In three years they could move on from Marshall, Revis, Brees, etc... and regain their cap space. These contracts don't stay on the books. As for the cap, they could certainly fit his contract. They'd redo it and give a huge signing bonus. Suh's deal with Miami included a $20M+ bonus and 2015 salary of $900k. They can certainly make it work if they wanted.
Geno is making a little over $ 1 M. Brees is set to count $26 M against the cap. Even if he were available, I am not sure we could add him without releasing at least a few (good) players. Even if we didn't have to cut anybody, that would essentially mean we are done with FA and are in a relative strait jacket this year and the following year, etc. Seattle has been in the ideal scenario ever since they drafted Russell Wilson: franchise QB locked into rookie deal at bargain basement (3rd round draft status) money.
This is an interesting situation. I wonder if Sean Payton is all-in and totally committed to a re-build. If he is, he'll be more willing to part with Brees since it's going to be very difficult to rebuild with that salary cap albatross around his neck. If Payton doesn't see himself as part of the rebuild, then maybe he'll want to hold onto Brees for another season before he (Payton) moves onto another job. Keep in mind too, the there is a good chance the Saints will go through an ownership change. There is a big legal battle going on between the owner and his heirs. I heard they are trying to get him declared mentally incompetent, and he is fighting to remove them from his will. (That's an over-simplification of what's going on, but you get the jist.) Payton may not want to hang around with uncertainty in ownership. And, I'm sure that figures into Brees' refusal to take a pay cut. Who knows, maybe he'd be willing to restructure with another team. Definitely worth pursuing.
The Jets are projected to have $39M in cap space next year. Just redo Brees' deal to include a huge signing bonus. The rest can be spread out. Bottom line is, they can make it work if they want. Plus the cap goes up every year. Its wanting to spend actual cash is what holds teams back, not the cap.
