If we end up signing Cro and Gilchrist, which we likely will, we will have added Darrelle Revis, Buster Skrine, Antonio Cromartie, and Marcus Gilchrist. That makes our secondary DRASTICALLY better than last year.

Having said that, how big of year do you think Wilkerson and Co. has?

A 3-4 defense dose not ask the lineman to put up huge stats. That's the job of the line backers, and so far those guys haven't gotten any better.

A bigger question might be.. How many minutes will our DL have to play this season. If the Offense can't do much better than last year, the D will have logged a lot of minutes by Nov/Dec and probably will start to wear down late in games. If the Offense can stay on the field, then the D will stay fresher (Capt. Obvious attacks!)

I see the success of the DL and the D in general tied directly to the success of Gailey's offense.

This is spot on, and exactly my concern with the Jets. Over the past four years, we've seen that a defense, no matter how talented, can't function well when it's on the field 65% or more of games. It's a function of two things: (a) getting stops on third down; and, (b) the offense going on long drives. The FA period has certainly helped out the Jets' ability with the first variable, but the second remains a question mark. Marshall will help, as should Carpenter, the maturation of last year's picks, and the establishment of a floor for QB play (Fitz). Will that be enough? Who knows.

Completely on point. We'll see after the draft though :) - if they get an OLB in round 1, that young man could have a great year.

    This.

We've had some great years on defense. I would like to see a great year of offense for a change.

Hard to argue the point that the offense needs to be better. However, I think some have severely overrated the performance of the defense in years past, especially last year. Good defenses don't give up a large percentage of 3rd and longs. Good defenses prevent scores. Good defenses take the ball away. The Jets defense did none of those things with regularity. I'd like to see a defense that, if nothing else, caused turnovers. You want to put a lot of the problems on the offense, but the defense really didn't help them out with much of anything, like turnovers, like getting off the field. These are things that an offense needs, especially when it's looking to build its confidence and has young players on it. And especially when it didn't have players who could score from anywhere on the field.

The bigger question is; does every thought that pops into your head warrant a new thread?

    This is very very true.

I think things might get better with the moves we've made but this is a major question.

I think having as good of a secondary that we might have, will help limit the time our defense is on the field. We sucked terribly with turnovers these last couple years. With the added talent in the secondary, we should increase our turnover rate, which in turn will take the defense off the field.

I'm looking for Coples to have a big year. If he is put in a situation where he is strictly rushing the passer, combined with our secondary, I'm expecting double digit sacks. He was really disruptive last year, even if the actual sack numbers weren't too high.

The guy is a pass rusher, Bowles should put him in a situation to best utilize his skillset.

This could very well be his break out year. I also expect David Harris to have a very good year.

Not saying it won't be. I am saying that if it isn't, our D will log a lot of minutes and by the end of the season, occasionally will appear gassed. Maybe Gailey's system will provide instant results and this won't be a consideration. Maybe Fitz starts or comes in later and has a great year. Maybe Geno gets his head out of his ass and plays like he knows what he's doing. Who knows man.
Any way you slice it, the D will have to find ways to get off the field on 3rd down and the offense will have to keep them off the field long enough to re-energize. 3 and outs over the long haul will wear your defense down.

We basically will have a top 3 defense imo...if we go farther and draft a pass rushing lb in the draft and Demario continues to progress and coples breaks out its game over we are the new Seahawks

With this said I'm growing Warmer to going pass rusher first round

it starts w/ the D, if they are getting off the field and setting up the O in good FP we'll be successful.

The O-line is still a sore spot to me...... a chain with weak links is pretty unreliable.

It's not bad, still plenty of work to be done but it's early in the offseason.
