I could see Cro as a guy who ( knowing Bowles system ) can plug into any spot in the backfield and be able to contribute. If Milliner comes out and seems to be recovered I think it'd be interesting to see Revis/Dee/Buster, Pryor/Allen, Cro/Gilherst. If I remember reading the writeup on Bowles defense he asks his backfield guys to do a lot more then Rex did. It's not so much a lineup one on one and go at it. Regardless,.. Even if we don;t make another move, This secondary is greatly improved. The front 7 is going to feast this year, If we can find a serious edge rusher this defense is going to be scary good. Kudos to Bowles and Mac, They seem like they have an aggressive plan and are making moves to accomplish it.
apparently gilchrist is having dinner as we speak with the coaching staff and buster skrine... last time eric decker had dinner we know what happened.... hopefully the cromartie negotiations were not in florham park as that would mean he is not invited to dinner
Stop negotiations with Gilchrist! Sign this beast! http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.co...-dashon-goldson-if-they-can-sign-chris-conte/
I agree and having some serious beasts on the DL only guarantees that. If for some reason the Jets don't take an offensive player @6 and draft a pass rusher, this could be one of those defenses that people talk about for decades
Yeah I like Goldson he's not a cover safety at all. Gilchrist at least has the pedigree of a cover dback and I think the main reason he was playing SS was because Weddle is an elite cover safety
You guys need to forget Cro playing FS. Makes no sense. He doesn't like to be physical and is not a very good tackler. That's NOT what you want in your FS.
correct, points allowed by defense only isn't technically a stat tracked by the NFL. maybe you can find some unofficial numbers for it on an advanced stats site, but that isn't what people are referencing when they talk points allowed. if you could filter out scores allowed by the O and ST, and there was still a large discrepancy between yds and pts, you'd have to ask yourself why that is.. It could be that the defense struggled in the red zone. but still, how are the opponents getting there if the D isn't allowing many yds? The answer is that the O and ST are losing the field position battle, and are likely turning the ball over quite a bit. with the Jets this season, we saw all of the above. But this is why the standard measure of a D is yds allowed. It isolates the defense more so than points, and is less dependent on the other phases of your team. Now i would agree yds alone doesn't tell you everything, but it's the standard measure for a reason. it can't be dismissed as unimportant.. telling stat for the Jets this season... 31 passing TD's allowed, 3rd worse in the NFL. that's a pretty clear indictment on our secondary 'talent'. conversely our rushing yds allowed were 5th best in league, and rushing TD's allowed was good as well. it was obvious what needed to improve.. Mac and Bowles are moving in the right direction.
it makes perfect sense. our defense did some things very well, and other things very poorly (coverage). we also turned the ball over way too much, and often lost the field position battle. Those conflicting stats are pretty much an accurate illustration of how we played.
They are also a good illustration of how little the yards allowed ranking matters when judging defensive efficiency.
lol, no it doesn't. the big reason our yds allowed were so low overall, is how good we were against the run. only 93 yds a game..........or do you dispute we were good against the run as you don't like yds? how else would you measure teams against the run? but it's also easy to look at other stats and see how poor our secondary was. if anything, these conflicting stats shows us that looking at only a singular defensive statistic might not show you the entire picture.
We were excellent against the run, So good that teams abandoned the run many times in favor of just picking our pass defense apart and scoring through the air. Hence the 31 passing TDs.
fwiw, last time we had Cro and Revis, we allowed only 15 passing TD's. 2nd best in that category, and less than half than the 31 passing TD's we allowed this year. we were a very good D that year, led by an excellent set of corners. but we didn't have the best run D, or the best pass rush, which was our weakness then. this will be the first time we have both the secondary in place, as well as the Dline. in short, if we can stuff the run and rush the passer like last year, while cutting down on all the coverage gaffes we had, this season has the makings for a special D.. i like what's going on..
i agree, the passing D was a major problem.. that's why i referenced that stat. it clearly illustrates what was wrong on D, and the need to overhaul the secondary with actual talent. The D did some good things as well tho, which shouldn't be ignored. read my post above....there are reasons to be optimistic about how we are trending..
one question.....if we weren't letting up many yds overall on D, how'd we let up so many passing TD's?
