What's going on with him? We need to sign this beast asap. He is going to be a vital part of our d next year if we want to be contenders. Get it done Mac!!
He will be here next year regardless under contract. Would like to see him signed though. Our defense this year is going to be epic.
He's a restricted fa right? That means we have the chance to match any offer another team makes him right? Plus him and Bowles are both from Elizabeth nj and both went to temple. It's like a match made in heaven. I don't see wilk leaving at all.
I don't believe this is correct. There is absolutely no rush to sign him. We're in the thick of free agent anarchy, why can't Wilks extension wait 2 weeks? or 2 months?
The Jets probably won't act on Wilkerson until after the draft. That gives them the most cap flexibility and keeps him available as a potential trade piece. Also, if they fail to resign him now, they can always drop the franchise tag on him next year.
And we can franchise him next year so really we have at least two years to get a deal done. It's not like he is making chump change either, he is getting 7M this year.
Whyis everyone so hung up on re-signing Wilk? His production dropped by half last season, and yes, our corners were crap, but if he's as elite as he wants to get paid...he's gotta be better than that. And I keep thinking when he got ejected from the GB game and was laughing about it. Does a player like that deserve an extension immediately? No. Enough with the Mo Wilk love
You're an idiot. The guy is an all-pro. His production did not drop. He had less sacks because he plays a position where sacks are a bonus and played three less games. That game where Wilkerson got ejected is an anomaly. He's a team guy and a homegrown talent. You don't let those guys walk out the door. We already watched that happen with Revis, at least we got Richardson out of it, but still. Wilkerson must be resigned if anything to show our guys that we're loyal if you perform. You build around your draft picks. That's been the problem with this team in recent years. We never give our guys second contracts and we acquire these old vets and expect them to produce like they're in their primes. I don't care if we don't sign another FA for 3 years. You extend every one of Wilkerson, Richardson, and Harrison.
If I was Macc or Bowles, I might want to see these guys play live for a while and see who I really want to extend. Most likely, I would let Mo play out his contract, then franchise him for a year. Meanwhile, I have Richardson coming along as well, going into his last season under contract while Mo is franchised. Hopefully, I've found some solution at QB by then, be it a stud or just a good game manager with a good running game. If I have a franchise QB that I'm going to have to pay, then I keep only Mo or Richardson, whoever plays better between now and then. If I have just a middle of the pack QB, I keep both of them and try to win with ball management and defense. In either case, I'm aiming at 2017 as my realistic Superbowl run time frame. By the end of 2016, I'm pretty sure I'll have a good defense, and I'll at least know what I have on offense, and who's going to be available in 2017. Who know's maybe we pull a John Elway and bring Drew Brees into a ready-made team and try go for it in a two-year window before he retires. And, I'd max the shit out of the salary cap. It would be all or nothing. If I win, I'm a hero. I never pay for another drink in this city as long as I live. If I fail, I'm shitcanned, and I leave the salary cap in a clusterfuck for the next GM. A year later, some other desperate team picks me up.
He's never been an All Pro player or a pro bowler and the thought is that he's going to want to be paid like one, which would be a mistake. We don't want him to leave but we also don't want to invest a 5 year $90 million deal into him when he's worth maybe $60 or so million. I'm all for keeping him around but we're not going to have the money to invest two gigantic deals into both Richardson and Mo. If I had to pick I'd take Richardson because he's simply a much better player at a younger age. People are so hung up on the fact that he's from around here, he wants to be a Jet, etc. It might be true but players don't take much below what they can get on the open market to go specific places especially not at their first crack at free agency. He's not going to take a $10 million pay cut to stay with the Jets and no one should expect that out of him. Think about yourself in that situation; if a job offered you 10-20% more are you going to stay at your original job because they were the first to hire you? We have all the leverage in the world with him considering he's under contract and he can get franchised next year. That puts us in a good position to evaluate him next to Richardson when he's ready to get his contract too. He's a good player similar to Richard Seymour even though he's inevitably not as good. If we can get a high first rounder for him it's something that certainly needs to be considered.
In the long run Mo could probably stand to make more due to an improved defense. Think about the sacks he's missed out on over the last 2 years due to horrible secondary play. That extra half second the QB has to hold the ball could lead to a whole shitload of sacks for Mo and Sheldon.
Wilkerson was a second team all pro and by all means should have been a pro bowler twice. He's not gonna demands 90 mil on 5 years. That's ridiculous to even say. 60 mil on 5 years is much more accurate and probably good value. There's no reason why we can't keep both of them. If anything, Harrison should be the odd man out. We have to stop this cycle of not paying and being disloyal to our guys. Wilkerson is worth more than a 1st both to our team and the league.
Rarely do teams give up a first round pick among other commodities for players. Someone posted a list of the trades involving first round picks and they're really few and far between. If it were as easy as a 5 year 60 million dollar extension don't you think it would've been a done deal by now?
