I disagree. The Jets HAD to do something. They couldn't just stand pat with Geno at QB. Bowles doesn't want a QB who throws a lot of picks and/or turns the ball over. While the FA QB class wasn't good (it never is), Fitzpatrick makes the most sense. He knows the system. He had some of his best years under Gailey. He's smart. He has cut down on his TOs. He's accurate. He will make a good mentor to Geno and possibly Mariota. IMO he was probably the best option.
So we have a backup/competition for Geno. Good. Unfortunately for the MM fan club, this makes it far less likely that we draft him. Pass rush appears to be the only area of need we haven't covered in FA/trades. Guess which position has the most depth at the top of this draft?
I'm so freakin' happy with the way things are going--fuck yeah! It's like the Jets FO is reading my mind! Now they need to draft OL heavy.
This is a solid move and in fact any move that gets Geno Smith closer to another team is a good move. Last year was one of the worst so it can only get better and I know Fitzpatrick can tell time.....Geno lost all credibility when he went to the movies because he couldn't tell what time it was....... No Way Geno Starts........we deserve better than that
There are so many knocks on GS it'll take a book--there's really nothing positive to say except maybe he will get better.
Jets must draft Mariota if he's there. That's a foregone conclusion, unless they plan to move ahead with GeNO. Fitzpatrick is here to shield the newly drafted QB kid from fire for a year or two, and gone afterwards. QB is STILL the biggest need - Jets don't have a viable long-term answer. Other than that, the entire offense looks set. They can go into OL and OLBs in 2~4th round. If this trade is what I think it cost them [7th, with option for next year's low trash pick] then Mac did VERY well to find some protection for the new QB.
I think everything is going smoother than I could have ever anticipated. Very pleased with what I see thus far from the front office. If the coaching staff pans out this well and we have a good draft, I see some quick changes in the AFC East my friends !
Actually I think it does the opposite.... We've all seen plenty of Fitzpartick to know he's nothing to really get excited about as we all know his limitations. However it is a good fit for the JETS as they needed at least one solid vet/journeyman on the roster, especially one that is familair with the OC's system if they do get the opportunity to draft a young stud. This is someone that could keep said prospect onthe bench for while limiting media/public uproar (as if Geno had one of his "special" games) and probably be a good mentor in the meantime (good teamate, intelligent, etc)
Oh well Geno...time to compete for real. Luckily, not Chess with Harvard guy lol. Won't matter, Gaily and Fitzpatrik to good a combo. Plan unfolding...YES!!
Fine by me. A steady hand for the interim period and hopefully will take on the 'Brunell' clipboard role when we have a young player that could become a franchise QB.
Say What? That's an understatement. We finally have a GM that "Gets it" We finally have staff that are INTELLIGENT!!!!!!!!
After the Presser with the new coaching staff you had to see the writing on the wall. Plus they owe nothing to Geno and if your a true Jets Fan you know Geno is not the answer.
That would be idiotic to pass on Mariota if they think he could be a franchise QB. Not saying they do but neither of the two guys we have now would ever be mistaken for a franchise player. Hopefully we won't be drafting in the top six anytime soon again and you don't get top QBs drafting at the bottom of the round.
