have to say, i'm not really a fan of the Carpenter signing.
Boling would have been a much better move..

weight issues, injury issues, poor run blocking, and his pass blocking was not even as good as Colon's..
Colon let up only 2 sacks total in his 2 years here......and that's with a QB who holds the ball way too long.

I'm really hoping they go after Bulaga.
Our Oline needs an upgrade somewhere.. Let Breno and Carpenter compete for a G spot....

i don't think its an upgrade at all.
if anything, he's younger. but no where near as nasty, not as hard a worker (see weight), or leader.
and his supposed bread and butter, pass pro, was not graded as high as Colon's these past 2 years..

i'm scratching my head on this one.. hope the money is not guaranteed.
why didn't they go after Boling?

Great move as long as we didn't overpay. We definitely need more depth on the OL.

Yes, but hasn't he stayed healthy the last couple of years? With conditioning having been part of his problem, is it out of the question for the Jets to have included some sort of conditioning clause in his contract?

The amount of money would suggest that the front office is finally taking the guard position seriously.

It is my hope that I am wrong and that this guy earns the money coming to him.

After tearing his ACL his rookie season, he has started 10 games and 13 games over the last 2 years respectively.

Not injury prone per-se, but he isn't someone we can expect to play 16 games a year

I'm sure he was brought in to start. He has some upside, so hopefully he continues to improve. Right now he is a pretty average guard, but that would be an upgrade right now.

I agree, although he has been somewhat injury-prone. Hope we stays healthy with us.

NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported that guard James Carpenter is set to sign a four-year deal worth roughly $5 million a year, per a source.

That's some good scratch for a player who couldn't stay healthy early in his career. Last season he was average in pass protection and struggled in the run game. Pro Football Focus graded the 25-year-old as -.6 is pass pro and -10.3 in run blocking in 2014. Carpenter was up to No 52 in Around the NFL's top 101 free agent list on the eve of the market opening.

This has to be the worst contract on the team right now.

But let's find out the guarantees
    The signing bonus
The first 3 yrs cash flows
And what the dead money is after yr 1 and 2

So I can't say anything yet. I am hoping it is just a 1 yr deal. With less than a mil dead money next yr when they cut him

I'm happy with the signing. The hand wringing seems excessive. The guy has potential AND was still rated better than ALL of our starting guards last year.

Not crazy about this one. He was the starter for the super bowl champs but kind of was a weak link on a solid O-line...

He's apparently very good in pass blocking but sucks in run blocking, something we could've used more.

Could turn out to be solid but at first glance not too happy but he's probably an upgrade over Colon so can't be that bad.

this contract is pretty gross...5 mil per for 4 years is a bad investment in this dude, hopefully the guarantees are low

The thing is that maybe he had trouble in some areas when he was with Seattle but that doesn't mean he will have those same struggles with the Jets, and maybe he will struggle in different areas. People bring up PFF stats life they are the sum of a player's ability but offensive linemen perform differently with different group of OLs. It's like a chemical reaction because of its complexity, maybe this guy was excellent at pas blocking because he reacted to his centers pre snap behavior better, but could never read him for runs. Maybe two guys didn't like each other for whatever reason and played independently of each other. The offensive line is unlike any other unit on the field because they are a co dependent unit. This guy could have stunk at some things that he could be good at now.

No way of knowing until they start playing together

Best indicator of future performance is past performance. Obviously there are other factors too. What leads you to believe that he will be better in NY than Seattle?

Yikes that's a lot of money and term for a lineman who's largely unproven. Hopefully Maccagnan sees some potential in him and he can stay healthy.

Nothing but hope, I have no expectation for him other than he may be better than Colon. In truth I am not optimistic at all about the offense and adding a RB or G isn't going to change anything. There's only one position that can really change the dynamic and there are very few options to do that.
