One thing to consider is Gailey's scheme. He's gotten some good years out of offensive linemen who have otherwise struggled under different coaching. This list includes Andy Levitre, Kraig Urbik and Erik Pears. All had mostly favorable PFF grades under Gailey. A lot of the lines effectiveness could probably be attributed to Gailey's scheme that spreads defenses out to open big running lanes, and the passing game that runs a lot of shotgun sets and ask the QB to get the ball out quickly. Either way, its a scheme that doesn't demand top notch, big contract blockers. While his contract wouldn't be peanuts, it's not Iupati dollars either.

Stop. You're using logic. It's not allowed.

I'm not too bothered that Carpenter is better in run support than pass blacking. RG is supposed to be a huge road grader that teams runs behind. Last I checked edge pass rushers don't bull rush RGs too often.

Here's a quick look at the round 1 drafting of the Jets vs Cowboys over the last 5 drafts:

    Jets:
    2014 Calvin Pryor FS
2013 Dee Milliner CB, Sheldon Richardson DT
    2012 Quinton Couples DE
    2011 MoWilk DT
    2010 Kyle Wilson DB

    'Boys:
    2014 Zack Martin OT
    2013 Travis Fredrick C
    2012 Morris Claiborne CB
    2011 Tyron Smith OT
    2010 Dez Bryant WR

    Where Jets went 3x D-Line, 'Boys went 3x O-Line.

Jets have one of the most dominant D-lines in the NFL, 'Boys have the best O-Line (Murray 1,845 yrds).

Should the Jets start using 1st round picks on the O-Line for the next 3 out of 5 years and own both trenches? At least for LT, I would say most certainly.

He was the 3rd or 4th option or worse after whiffing on Franklin and Iupati.

I notice both those guys chose to stay in their divisions. Stay in West and get to face their old teams 2x a year.

Please tell me the numbers for Carpenter are nowhere close to what Franklin got and what Boling and Bulaga get...

But it's the other way around with Carpenter. Solid in pass pro, no so much in run blocking.

I want to know what our offers were to Franklin and Iupati, and whether we are even talking to Boling.

All I've heard on Boling is Vikings.

If we don't get him (or Bulaga) we are going to have to invest a draft pick in somebody I guess and hope whoever that is isn't a swinging door like Winters / Aboushi.

Aboushi was solid in the time he played...definitely wouldn't mind him starting, a year under his belt. I'd definitely draft a tackle because brick is getting old, breno isn't quite that good neither.

We have become the trash receptacle for Seattle's discarded linemen, the shore upon which their OL flotsam washes up.

ah ok, so he may be better at LG. Either way I would expect RG to be a 350lb road grader with 'some' pass blocking ability.

Uggh.... $4.75 M per for Mr. can't stay in shape.

Jets will sign OG James Carpenter to a four-year contract worth roughly $4.75 million per season.

After striking out on big-ticket guards Orlando Franklin and Mike Iupati, the Jets settle for Carpenter. The Seahawks' first-round pick in 2011 has struggled with conditioning for much of his career, in part leading to 19 missed games across four seasons. Carpenter, a far better pass-protector than run-blocker, will replace Willie Colon for the Jets. It's an underwhelming signing, though Carpenter is just about to turn 26 years old and offers upside if he can kick the injury bug. Mar 10 - 7:05 AM

That could not have been written in a more negative way. The truth is it is an UPGRADE from Willie Colon. Enough said.

A staple in football that has been ignored since the signing of Faneca

It would be nice to see the Jets with a decent Oline again.

$4.75m/per isn't bad. We absolutely had to adress the position.

How often do you see a Guard that is good in pass protection but poor in run protection? I feel like its always the opposite.

How much of an upgrade is it though, honestly? Colon cost 2 M last year on a 1-year deal. Carpenter has been inked for 4 years, 4.75 M per, with probably a fair amount of it guaranteed.

The running game could take a step back with Carpenter in there.

I am not saying I wanted Colon back, but I don't see tremendous value here. If you are going to overpay, do it for good to great players.

Geez we're in real trouble if the Jets are signing players before the FA period starts, never mind his ability, we'll probably lose a draft pick for this infraction

My bad. He hasn't been officially signed yet. But it sounds as if it's basically a done deal.
