Got it. No response, so you result to saying I'm out of touch. Maybe I'm not the only one who's out of touch.
Mariota is not going to start coming into the season or maybe we really are considering trading that 6th pick to the ealges in which case signing fitz makes plenty of sense
Your post doesn't warrant a response. You're worried about having two QBs on the roster that would make probably $3 mil total in a year where we will have trouble meeting the minimum amount of money we have to spend. You think that we should forego the signing of competition for Geno because we will assuredly land Mariota in the draft. And the real cherry on top, you think someone is going to trade for Geno. That's the definition of being out of touch.
So lets get a few things straight: 1). I didn't say we are assuredly going to get Mariota. I said its likely 2). I never said someone would trade for Geno. I suggested that we should if we sign Fitzpatrick, but I clearly realize no one's trading for him. Now that we've ironed out a few things, how exactly would we have trouble meeting the minimum cap requirements if we are spending 15M+ on CB's(and thats if we don't don't get Revis), probably close to 10+ on Iupati(if we get him), giving Mo a new contract, getting a few depth players, and then paying for free agents. Aren't we at about 40 million in cap space if we cut Harvin? You seem to be operating under the assumption that we are going to make almost no moves.
Coupla things: 1) Any QB drafted this year should carry a clipboard at least for the first half of the season. 2) That leaves Geno and Simms right now, with a hope that Bradford shakes loose. Too risky. Starting Geno this year will sink our new head coach. 3) I'd rather get Fitzpatrick right now, and if Bradford does shake loose, maybe say see-ya to Geno and keep Fitz and Bradford as your QB's. 4) If Mariota is at 6, you grab him as the future QB, then you have alot of options.
I'm not convinced Fitzpatrick is a significant upgrade over Geno. He certainly doesn't have more upside. If Gailey feels Fitzpatrick will contribute then I suppose it makes sense, but as a fan I don't feel great about it.
I dont know, I think Fitzpatrick has shown improvement in the last few years, and if he has a system and coach he's comfortable with and the quality of receivers the Jets have now, I think he has the chance to be very good, good enough to give the Jets a viable shot at the playoffs.
Especially if Hoyer is gone, he's the most competent option with the added (considerable) bonus of reuniting Chan Gailey. Unless they can swing a quality trade for Nick Foles or Mike Glennon, Fitz is the best (soon-to-be) available option IMO
He's an upgrade of Eugene, but good god no, I don't want this guy starting games for the Jets. Better pray for Foles, or Bradford or Glennon or Kaepernick, or Namath, or Marino, or Starr... Jesus....
I'd take Fitz, if he is released. He already knows the offensive system and should be a good mentor to whoever is the Jets long term answer at QB.

He's not a franchise QB obviously, but he has had 5 straight seasons with a better than 1:1 TD:INT ratio and 4 straight seasons with a completion percentage above 60. That's not bad... A Jet QB hasn't done either of those things since 2011 (so that's 3 straight seasons with starting QBs posting completion percentages below 60 and throwing more INTs than TDs). So, yeah, Fitzpatrick may not be exciting, but he's an upgrade. I'd rather see them make a reasonable trade for Glennon or Foles too, but if they don't, Fitzpatrick is the best option available - much better than any other free agent
Are you 100% sure that TEN won't snatch him at 2? That PHI won't trade up past Jets? That WAS won't take him at 5 to prevent Eagles getting him? Because if any of these things happen while Jets don't get a vet, you're in for another year of uncontested Geno. Are you sure you wanna bet on it?
I wouldn't. I'd rather have another terrible season, draft in the top five, get a franchise QB and then go for the playoffs for the 2016-17 season.
