Photos via Draft breakdown Mariota Throws a dig route, isn't that an NFL route? Crossers , also referred to as HI LO. Isn't that an NFL Concept as well(this is often a two to three level read)? Continuation of play above, Mariota continues to read the play, pumps to 7 route on left side and hits the crosser Will Mariota be asked to do more? Of course he will, but don't tell me he wasn't going through reads or ask to run NFL concepts.
Word is he is smart enough to learn a Pro style offense. Most of the Scouts know he came from Oregon but Mariota was able to call a lot of audibles, Pro Style Reads etc. while at College. This is why NFL teams are so interested in him. Look at history, did Joe Montana learn a Pro style offense at Notre Dame? Of course not. So I guess you are saying Chip Kelly is a clown bringing a "carnival offense" to the NFL?
Ummmm, yeah, Joe Montana did learn and run a "pro style offense" at Notre Dame. As for Mariota, it's not a question of "smarts". There are plenty of guys who are smart enough to understand pro style offenses, that doesn't mean they can step out onto a field and execute one. Will Mariota be able to improve his accuracy to hit smaller NFL windows ? Will he be able to get timing down and throw with anticipation ? Will he be able to stand in the pocket and go through progressions ? Some of these questions are moot IF he goes to a team that runs an Spread style offense similar to what he ran at Oregon and what Chip Kelley has brought some of to the NFL. However, if Mariota goes to a team that tries to force him into being a QB in a "pro style" of offense, there will be some growing pains and he might not be able to do it.
He showed 0 toughness as a matter of fact Bosa hit him late in that game, and the OL went berzerk I am sorry, the guy is a pussy. if you want him for the six overall, hey..be happy.he's less than Sanchez. fact
If the Jets took him at 6 and could sit him for a season or two guaranteed he'd have a higher ceiling than Sanchez and might be good. If they put him on the field day 1 we will be reminded in a hurry of why QB's never work out for the Jets.
So let's rewind a few years back. You have a choice of Geno Smith or Mariotta. You grab Smith because he ran more of a Pro offense?? Granted, we see how terrible GS is now vs then but his College stats are no match to MM plus Mariotta threw plenty of pro style passes in College. If MM was in a Pro style offense in College this does not guarantee success either, just being more comfortable doing that from what you said. So he will have to learn a little more in the NFL and it will take longer. Geno is out there now...what has he learned?. Plus, I would not abandon MM if I was his agent right now lol. The problem with many people on TGG is they want all the chips in place to guarantee success. Even if we managed to move up and get Winston ( a pro style passer) he could come here and end up in jail whereas MM is clean. No perfection, just risk and opportunity
Geno didn't run a pro style offense in college. He ran a spread option system his soph year under Bill Stewart and an Air Raid offense his junior and senior years under Dana Holgorsen. Of course, no QB prospect is an absolute guarantee. If MM had run a pro style offense at Oregon and had anywhere near the same career, he'd be the #1 QB on the board right now ahead of Winston. It's not about being "more comfortable" doing it. It's about demonstrating that you definitely have that ability. That it isn't yet one more thing that you will have to learn trying to transition from being a college QB to an NFL QB.
Then can we at agree on J.Winston?? At the combine Bowles was in stands watching both QB's and all the commentators were in agreement that the Jets might trade up for a Franchise QB. If we somehow get Jamais W and you have a problem with that I don't what to tell you. Why is MM a #2? Guess they made a mistake and Petty and Mannion should be there.
Joe Montana may have learned and run a "pro style offense" in college, but it was probably NOTHING like the WCO. I think Mariota's adjustment is not that far off from the adjustments that Joe had to make.
It's a huge adjustment. We have no idea if Mariota can play well under center and we have no idea if he can handle an offense where he will have to make multiple reads on a majority of the plays he's passing on and where pre-snap reads will be lessened in importance compared to snap reads as he's dropping back with the footwork he may or may not possess. Joe Montana played most of his snaps under center and made most of his reads out of a pro set as the play was developing. Mariota could be a total disaster, as Johnny Manziel was last season and Geno has been for 2 seasons now. We just won't know until he tries to make the adjustments. Anybody who says they can see things in him that make his successful transition likely is just guessing.
I don't understand why we would draft a guy who is obviously good at running the spread, and then try and convert him to a "Pro Style QB" because that is what is "needed" to be successful in the NFL... If you draft this guy, don't try and convert him into something he is not.. Design a system based on his strengths and he will be successful.
The downside is the RGIII situation where the NFL is just too much wear and tear for a running QB to survive for long. Cam Newton has survived because he's huge but he's not prospering in the system just holding his own.
I don't think that Jets would trade up to take Winston, and I think it would be a mistake at this time if they did so. Reason being is that there are too many other holes that need to be filled.
If Philly jumps us or someone takes Mariota, Winson is the next best thing and I would not be opposed to a little trade up to insure that. We need one of these guys. _
Smith did not run a pro-style offense. He ran the Air Raid. Which is why Mariota would be a much worse decision, because you would be taking him so much higher in the draft. Mariota (as Bwaysux pointed out) would be an excellent investment for a team like....Green Bay, where Rodgers will be 32 at the end of this season, and by the time he's 35, would have been sitting behind a superior player for a few years, and if you locked up Rodgers, you would be in a position to get excellent trade value from a QB poor team.
