We also drafted Gholston to keep the Patriots from getting him. They got Mayo who I wanted on our team all along. You work on your own team's needs and not to prevent other teams plans.
While I agree that we did overpay him it is not a horrible contract. Screwing Rex over is the icing on the cake that almost makes the extra cap space worth it.
Much bigger contract than I expected but he does bring that silent lunchpale leadership and is smart as hell I'm just praying he doesn't start declining too sharply where his coverage is noticeable on every play.
contract specific's! http://overthecap.com/player/david-harris/982 http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/new-york-jets/david-harris/ thats pretty cleanly divided, literally a pair of fully guaranteed 7.5 million dollar base salaries followed by a 6.5 mil hit the last year. no signing bonuses or any other kind of bonus at all. pretty cut and dry.
I'm not in love with this move, but I can live with it and the message it sends. As a Jet, Harris worked hard, been a good team member, and (arguably) played beyond his physical capabilities. The Jets have rewarded him with this contract on the backend of his career. It's a positive message that they'll take care of their own. And, given the excess money they have, the Jets can afford to send this message. All those factors make me, as a fan, OK with this move.
harris is always the unsung hero to your team. he is always solid. not great at anything, but solid and he does the job. he is B level player, but that's more than adequate.
U just do not understand that the NYJs are going NOWHERE this year, or NEXT year, Or the the year after NEXT year so going out & getting a young/fast rookie & DEVELOPING him would have been a far better course then resigning was. You have to learn to look ahead & not backwards
You never know with how the NFL is these days. Teams go from worst to first pretty fast. The Jets want to compete in 2015. I like it.
I definitely agree that developing younger faster players is a great thing for a team in a position like the Jets. However, I believe Harris is a good resigning for the Jets because he's one of the few players the Jets have had over the past couple of years who goes about his business "the right way" and is an excellent leader and player mentor for those guys. With the way the Jets roster is currently constructed, I can't think of a guy on the defense who is a better role model for the rest of the guys on the squad. Having him around also takes pressure off of the front office to find an effective replacement through the draft immediately. They can target whomever they want now and not have to worry about it exploding in their face immediately. Better to bring in the young guys, let them show what they can do in practice, and gradually get them on the field as they prove themselves to be worthy of playing on an NFL field. I don't believe Harris will be around past this contract, but if the Jets want to climb out of the basement they can't afford to have leaks in too many places on the roster. Harris will serve his purpose, so I'm comfortable with that.
What young / fast rookie do you believe will be available since you know so much? The deal is a good deal for 2 yrs while we have all of this cap space. We will eventually draft a replacement - they might do it in this draft, but I would prefer not to see David Harris in a Bills uni. I agree we need linebackers, but you don't let one guy w/out a valuable replacement
yep for exactly the same reasons as Harris since by the time we are ready to be real true contenders BM will be 34 or so years old. Unless we get our selves a grade A QB we are going nowhere for many years to come IMHO
I think U ought to watch the part of the movie Draft Day when the guy talked of the Browns fans then maybe U will understand where I am coming from
You ought to watch the movie Draft Day especially the part where they describe the Browns fan because that is exactly what U are as a NYJ fan with this post
really, the issue is that there isn't an easy alternative to Harris at this point and time. a good GM doesn't put himself in a position to be in desperate of any core player needlessly. If we had a Bernard McKinney type with a year or two under his belt waiting in the wings sure move on. but we don't, and we don't want to HAVE to go get a young ILB that we MUST hope can start and contribute in a big way sooner than later. not if we could help it. Given the opportunities in front of us retaining Harris is a prudent move, wether we want to win now or down the road. now we can move on to the draft and Free Agency with one less need. that means A LOT.
Yep. This was a smart signing by the Jets. You paid a little extra, big deal the Jets have the space and losing his leadership in such a huge transition year would have inexcusable with Harris already on the roster. The AFCE sure as shit is entertaining these days.
http://grantland.com/the-triangle/the-10-worst-free-agent-deals-so-far/ Grant land put out an article on worst free agent deals so far and David Harris made the list. I still stand by my opinion that $7mm was too much for him despite him being a longtime veteran given his issues in coverage and fact that we paid him very well on his precious deal. Still would rather have spent that extra $$ on an OLB or free safety, but oh well.
