Not upset they resigned him, but that's a lot of guaranteed money over the next two years... More than I thought he'd get. Bowles must think pretty highly of him
Guys when you really think about it, Marshall is cheaper than Harvin and Harris is essentially taking a paycut. Yes we possibly could have done better on the salary, but we need some continuity on defense. I guaranteed we would have overpaid more for a veteran of lessor talent if we let Harris go.
I disagree. Just because teams want to be competitive and not go in to a complete "rebuild" where they're keeping and playing only youngsters, doesn't mean they're going "all in" or looking to win now. One of the things that cost Idzik his job was not addressing holes last year and just sitting on the money. Mac isn't going to make that mistake. He can't. He's forced to spend money by league rules, regardless of what he would have chosen to do either way. If Mac signs a bunch of other old FAs who make big money, then it will appear that Mac is going "all in" or trying to win the Lombardi Trophy in 2015 and I'll say you're right. Until then, he's just filling holes, making the team as good as he can, making it more competitive, and providing flexibility going into the draft.
True. My point was that we have a new coach and I cannot presume he will just keep everybody in their familiar roles. Plus I expect Harris to be off the field some. His coverage skills get worse and worse.
Semantics my man. Beauty (size in this case) is in the eye of the beholder. To you, Decker is "huge," to Mo he simply is "big" or has "good size." What difference does it make?
Hold the fort, as Parcells used to say. I think they are sprinkling the old and the new. FAs by definition are veterans. I would not be surprised to still see them draft a wideout and a linebacker. I do not like the Harris money for a 2 down LB, and I question Marshall's sanity, but both of these guys have been at it for years. They are here to keep things on an even keel (talent-wise) while the team climbs back to respectability
For those saying Harris is a 2-down LB who can't cover, he actually graded out positively in pass coverage in 2014, higher than Demario actually. Here are his numbers as posted by a member in an old thread: http://forums.theganggreen.com/threads/pff-2014-rankings-for-every-jets-player.83033/ He might be 31 and this might seem like a lot of money, but the guy can still play, even on 3rd round and he'll continue to be a leader and centerpiece of the defense for the next two years. If he was given this much guaranteed money, Bowles must be confident that he can still play
Yes, every team needs some "hold the fort" types. By definition, however, those guys aren't generally expensive, but rather cheaper, older vets.
I'm not saying he's huge. I don't care if he's tiny as long as he catch the ball. I was just trying to play "peacemaker" between you two.
I know you were. I'm just saying, when you think of "huge" receivers I think of guys that can go up and get the ball. That's not Decker at all.
David Harris: "After hearing the plans and vision of Coach Bowles and Mike Maccagnan, there was no doubt I wanted to return, help win a Super Bowl with the Green & White, and retire a Jet" Wonder what they told him. My guess is they said they'd go hard after Revis and threw a QB name at him.
I'm willing to bet it was the "we will give you $15 mil fully guaranteed over the next two years" part.
I haven't been the biggest Harris fan recently, but I feel good about keeping him around for the next couple of years, just to hold the fort and provide flexibility in this year's draft. It also gives the impression that these guys (Maccagnan and Bowles) understand the roster and how best to maximize the 'rebuild'.
Having the ability to go up and get the ball has nothing to do with size whatsoever. Some short, small-statured WRs can go up and "get the ball." Conversely, some gargantuan-types who are 6'4", 6'6" or taller can't jump for spit. "Huge" refers to physical stature. It's a relative term in the NFL because of the size of most of the players. 6'3" is above average for the general population, and for the average size of WRs in the NFL, but it's not even that tall, and 220 pounds at that height is actually pretty thin. At the moment, I can't think of a single WR I'd classify as "huge."
This has gotten so ridiculous. I don't even care anymore. My point was no one in their right mind would consider him "huge" because he's 6'3" and built.
