BS, absolute and utter BS imo. There is still EVERY reason to draft Mariota. He's 10x the QB Geno will ever be.
This guy has no more fucking excuses after the moves we're gonna make this offseason Personally I hope he doesn't even get the chance to start, but he will. The is make or break for him
Please. Geno's pedigree is NOTHING like Mariota's. Not even close. If Mariota's there and you're smart, then you have to take him. He has too much potential and too many characteristics that good/great QBs have, and the Jets little hope with Geno, and little hope for finding a sure thing QB. They only come around so often, and we're going back the 1983 draft when the Jets opted for Kenny O'Brien over Dan Marino as the last time the Jets had a chance to draft a "sure thing" at QB. With the improvements that Mac is making on the team, if Bowles is anywhere near as good a HC as he has been a DC, the Jets are NOT going to be in a position to draft a sure thing at QB when one comes along.
Really? And how do you know that? Is it because he's excelled in a pro style offense? Nope. Is it because he's excelled as a pocket passer? Nope. Is it because he has great footwork dropping back from under center? Nope. Is it because he has a cannon for an arm? Nope. What happens when he takes off running and gets blown up like RGIII? He doesn't have Cam's size, and even Cam is breaking down. Can Mariota become a pocket passer? Nothing is certain and I want you to name me one spread QB who is truly a franchise QB. Cam? RGIII? Kaep? Mariota is a project, just like Geno. He might work out and be the next Kaepernick (?) or he might be another Blaine Gaebbert. It'll take a few years to find out and I'd rather not waste ANOTHER high pick on a spread QB until we're done evaluating Geno. It's just plain stupid.
Mariota = Marino? Seriously? How is that comparison possible? Pedigree? We're not choosing poodles! This post is so full of conjecture and buzzwords but you have given us absolutely nothing to confirm or even argue why Mariota has to be the pick at #6. Here's what Bruce Arians has to say about spread QBs coming into the NFL: "So many times, you're evaluating a quarterback who has never called a play in the huddle, never used a snap count," Arians said. "They hold up a card on the sideline, he kicks his foot and throws the ball. That ain't playing quarterback. There's no leadership involved there. There might be leadership on the bench, but when you get them and they have to use verbiage and they have to spit the verbiage out and change the snap count, they are light years behind." http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/...mbine-5-takeaways-from-quarterback-interviews Does that concern you a little bit, or are you just blinded by Mariota's stats? HE IS NOT READY FOR THE NFL!
Cam is not breaking down. You guys need to quit lying. You have no idea what you're talking about and are just making up crap. That's total BS. I'm sorry you're so afraid of the unknown and can't see past the nose on your face. If you can't see the potential in Mariota in spite of his not having played in a pro style offense, then I don't know what to tell you. His arm is strong enough. It doesn't have to be a cannon. Yes, he most certainly can become a pocket passer/QB, if that's what he needs to do. In fact, he's already shown that he can do that if you saw Oregon's game vs FSU this past season. Waiting for a "sure thing" is like waiting for Godot. You guys who keep saying that we need to wait for a sure thing have no idea what you're talking about. It's been 1983 since the Jets had the opportunity to draft a "sure thing" at QB in the first round. It could be that long again, especially if Bowles and Mac are any good. So the team is just supposed to sit around and "hope" that they get lucky or are they supposed to tank one year when there is a "sure thing" QB prospect like Luck? You guys who have to have the security of a "sure thing" are sad and pathetic. While I can understand it to some extent with all the busts the Jets have drafted, you'll never know greatness having to go with only "sure things" (as if there were such a thing). The only thing you'll find in "safety" and certainty is mediocrity. I hope you can live with that. I sure can't. I CAN SEE the ability that Mariota possesses and am realistic enough to know that the things he has to learn aren't all that difficult for someone with his talent and football IQ. RGIII is the only one of those QBs you mentioned who comes close to Mariota in football IQ. Cam has the most physical talent and size, but doesn't have the accuracy or football IQ. RGIII's problem are those thin legs and reckless style in which he runs the ball. Mariota's smarter than that I believe. Kaep is more of a running QB who has a strong arm and can also throw the ball, but again doesn't have the football IQ that Mariota has. It's not plain stupid. QBs are valuable. You can't have enough of them. If the Jets drafted Mariota and both Geno and he develop, then the team would have great QB play and insurance for several seasons, then the Jets could go with the better of the two and trade the other for a #1 pick or perhaps multiple picks. Taking a great QB prospect is NEVER a waste.
Sometimes I can't believe what NC posts, but this is spot on. Jetaho in any event doesn't want any scenarios that would risk Smith not being the starting Qb next season, so I take his criticisms of Mariota with a few bags of salt.
Read much? You need to work on your reading comprehension. I didn't say that Mariota = Marino. You said that Mariota isn't a "sure thing" so you don't want him. I merely pointed out the last time the Jets had the opportunity to draft a "sure thing" at QB. I've already seen that quote from Arians and it's been discussed in another thread. I'm not blinded by anything, but it's obvious that you're blind if you can't see Mariota's talent and potential. Big fucking deal that he's not ready for the NFL. You can say that about somewhere between 70-90% of the rookies that come into the league every year. Does that mean that teams don't take them or shouldn't take them? No. That's why you have a CS to teach and develop and why you look for players that have great work ethics, talent, football IQ and a burning desire to be great or as good as they can be. So he has to sit for a year, working on taking snaps from under center, his footwork, reading Ds, etc. At the end of that year you potentially have a very good, if not great QB. In all likelihood, he would then be ready to start in 2016. If you wait until the 2016 draft, there may not be a QB with Mariota's talent, football IQ, work ethic and character, and even if there is, you may not be in a position to draft him. Even if by some miracle there was and you were able to draft him, just because he played in an NFL-type offense in college doesn't mean that he would be ready to play in 2016. With a lower football IQ, with a less accurate arm, he may have to sit for a year and may be a project in another way. At least my post is full of truth, common sense and football knowledge and not fear, lies and BS like yours.
Nothing. So I guess that means he'll be a Hall of Fame QB just like all of the other spread QBs who are tearing up the league right now. My bad.
No one said anything of the sort. But folks keep throwing out Arians comments and then lumping Mariota in with Geno or every other shitty spread QB to ever fail in the NFL and they say "SEE?!?" It's disingenuous. _
Couple of things: Smith was far from a "shitty spread QB" and, quite frankly, your use of the word "disingenuous" seems like you were just looking for a big word to use. Cause it's not disingenuous to lump them together. It may be "not right" to do so, but people sincerely believe them to be similar projects.
Read the exchange and then you'll understand my use of really big words you needed to google. And Smith is the definition of a shitty spread QB. _
I think with Marshall coming to this team that the Jets plan to go in another direction at QB. I think that the Jets are either going to sign or trade for a veteran QB. With some more smart free agency moves, this team has the ability to compete for a playoff spot with a consistent QB.
It's lumping in Mariota with other spread QBs, and there's nothing disingenuous about it. Everyone around here clamors for a franchise QB, but the fact remains that no spread QB has ever turned into a franchise QB. What is disingenuous is saying that Mariota has pedigree, intangibles, intelligence, and is a winner because none of that bullshit translates into being a franchise QB without first being a pocket passer. They said the same shit about RGIII, the Skins bought in, and it killed them. At this point, Mariota is a prospect who could become a viable QB some day - That's it. He's not the second coming of John Elway or Peyton Manning.
