I can't see the Jets overpaying for a receiver. If anything I can see them signing a Lafell caliber receiver that would come fairly cheap, and maybe use the draft to shore up the position. Plus we have a few guys on the roster that could take a step up.
Or I think our regime is going to want talented/experienced wide receivers who can get separation for a young/growing quarterback to build his confidence and allows him to stay the QB while he develops. If you have shitty WRs, the QB doesn't throw the ball as soon, gets his bell rung a few too many times, forces bad throws and has interceptions, leading to a fan base calling for their head, while the QB's confidence disappears. See: Mark Sanchez on 10/2/2011 vs. Ravens. See: Geno Smith his entire rookie year.
It sounds like Marshall and the Bears are headed for a divorce. For the right price, Macc should be all over that. http://www.rotoworld.com/player/nfl/3653/brandon-marshall
I wonder what we have in Shaq Evans. Some say he plays like Anquan Boldin, but to me his college highlights made him look like Maclin. Not a flashy player but gets open and can get yards after the catch.
Would love to have Marshall on this team. These are the type of decisions that can make or break a GM.
Maclin is a one year wonder who normally underachieves and can't stay healthy. Other than last year, he's been a flat out bust.....PASS! (Maclin looked a lot better last year in Chip Kelly's offense than he actually is.)
I REALLY hope you're being sarcastic. Dude has been an animal every year he has played in this league. The worst season he has ever had was his rookie year where he started only 13 games, and had 56 receptions, 773 yards, with a career low 4 TDs. He has had more catches, yards, and TDs in every other year he has played. What WR have the Jets had in the last 10-20 years who were like that? Please do tell, I'll be waiting.
begs the question...WHY?? If there are young an extremely talented free agents available WHY gamble in the draft. We can still draft a receiver even if we spend some money on a free agent.
Its amazing what one season ending injury that probably 40% of skill players suffer will do to a players reputation. Outside of that injury he's missed 5 games in 4 years. Not a clean bill of health but to label him as a bust whose often injured is silly considering he's never had less than 770 yards receiving in a year including 4 years in Philly as the #2 receiver. He's really been nothing BUT productive in his young career.
Why pay 8-9 million a year for a 900 yard a season WR, when we can get a rookie WR with higher potential, for much less money? That's my take. I would like some of these FA WR's, but I don't want to over-bid also. Yes we have 55 million in cap, or whatever, but let's not lose perspective.
Cobb/Maclin are greater than 900 yard a season WR's and are both young. They are worth the $$ it's not like we are discussing Andre Johnson who is ancient and in fact a 900 a year WR.
I do NOT WANT Andre. I would like Cobb to stay in GB selfishly, but would welcome him to the Jets too. I just don't think he would be worth the money the NYJ would have to spend. Maclin is ideal. His numbers don't show how good he is imo.
I'd take Cobb over the others named. I don't care if he's not that tall. He's one of those guys who's an exception to the rule. He's the most explosive WR available this year. Even at 5'10 192, he's a #1 WR because he's a threat to take it the distance on any play. If he's commanding too much, then I'd look at Maclin.
I was hoping the Jets took Cooks in the first round last year. He's more or less a poor man's Cobb. If the Jets get Cobb in free agency and Kevin White is there at 6...
If it were me, I'd sign Cobb and a vet that shakes loose like maybe a Marshall, and draft a receiver in the 2nd. I want one of those QB killers in the draft, we need that BAD!
Save our cap $s for 2nd tier guys that all teams need to fill out the ranks and for tried and true offensive lineman which are really really hard to draft and develop. Steal our next Mawae or Faneca (or both). Use the draft for high priced skill positions that can contribute almost right away (4-5 years for free). WR, DB, OLB, QB. Picking up the 2nd contract for another teams superstar means you're paying huge bucks from day one.....no 4 yr rookie contract to balance things out. Come on guys you're smarter than that.
