It is a crap shoot, but we have to keep trying to fix this spot. I would like them to at least draft one or even two a year til they find a good one.

I had a dream last night, where we traded him.

Worst dream I've had in months.

I see this a lot on here and can understand why it is said. However, say we did do it and 6 years down the line we get our guy, what kind of impact is that going to have on the roster? No one is going to hit on all their picks, no one gets close to doing that, and we've just tossed 1 or 2 a year away. So we finally get our QB, great, but he's throwing at Salas mk2 and being protected by a bunch of guys off the street.

I just don't see this approach working in reality.

Maybe the revamping of our scouting dept will make a difference but multiple picks could work in a three year window. Our draft defense first then offense as an after thought plan failed miserably. The rookie cap makes this possible.

It's going to be real awkward next week if we are slinging out $9 and $8mm contracts to free agents while Wilkerson sits on his hands waiting for a deal.

Agreed, I think Mac will try to get a deal done long term before the FA market opens.. If they can't come to terms I could see them riding the year out and threatening the franchise tag

They're not going to franchise Wilkerson unless he has a top year and stays healthy. I really think that if they can't sign him he's very likely to get dealt before or during the draft. They don't have much wiggle room with him because this is the free option year and it's a new regime coming in and Wilkerson's value will never be higher than it is right now.

There's no question they'd like to sign him but does Wilkerson want to extend with the Jets at this point? If he's at the top of the market the answer is no.

Mac is a personnel guy and got a real up close and personal view of Watt for years. It shouldn't be too difficult for him to knock down Wilk a few rungs on the ladder if that's what he's shooting for. The agents are going to have to make a convincing argument why he deserves top of the market. Hopefully Mac can articulate clearly to them why he's not there.

how about locking up / tendering our 3-4 NT... might be a good idea

unless Macc is planning to draft Danny Shelton or Bowles can run his 3-4 without a NT

I am less concerned about Mo. He is under contract for this season and is not going to hold out.

Yeah, aside from Suh I feel like Harrison would be the best interior DL available and I can't imagine Suh is even an option.

Free agents get a significant bump when they hit the market because they can negotiate with anybody. It's going to be very hard to convince Wilkerson and his agents to take a true value deal when he knows that he can wait a year and either get a huge franchise tag or hit the market and deal with the highest bidders.

The time to lock up Wilkerson was last year and he and Idzik could not reach an agreement.

Remember that despite his flaws Idzik is a skilled negotiator and cap guy. That he couldn't reach agreement with Wilkerson despite having a lot of cap space available is very telling for where this is going to wind up in the end.

If Macc is foolish enough to let Snacks hit the open market, I think he is going to get a rude awakening.

I think NE and a lot of other teams would be all over him. He's a young, underpriced dominant run stuffing 3-4 NT. We're not talking about a 3rd string Safety here in terms of what that means to a defense.

I think myself and a lot of us will be pretty disappointed to see Snacks with anything less than a second round tender by 4pm

Getting money now rather than a year from now is big when you consider the risk involved. There is also a payback there. How many years is it going to take to earn the money you're not getting this year? I'm sure he would still be well paid.

I don't recall ever seeing anything indicating the Jets even discussed contract with Wilk last year. What is there to indicate Idzik couldn't reach a deal?

Mo Wilkerson said several times that he wasn't going to comment on a possible extension and that his agents were handling that. He said his job was on the field and that's what he was sticking to. That's a great attitude to have as a player. It also likely means that his agents and Idzik were discussing a deal and could not reach a meeting point on it.

I suspect that the negotiations stopped when the Texans announced they were invoking the option year on JJ Watt. A day or two later the Jets did the same thing.

The deadline for invoking the 5th year option was May 2nd last year. The Texans exercised Watt's option on April 17th and the Jets followed with Wilkerson on April 18th.

There would have been no reason for them to follow the Texans if they hadn't been in negotiations with Wilkerson right up until the moment that Watt's option was invoked.

This contract extension has always had JJ Watt hanging over it. It probably has Ndamakung Suh hanging over it now. If Wilkerson sees himself in the same class as those players it is going to be very hard to get a deal done.

and he really is not in that class. I will not say "not even close", but I would say there is a distinct talent gap.

Yes. I would go as far as to say there is nobody else in the league close to being in JJ Watt's class. There's him and then there's everybody else.
