Despite being young, - it seems more & more prevalent to me that Winters has no place starting at guard in this league. I'm hopeful that Aboushi & "red-shirt year" Dozier compete for a starting guard spot (the other spot goes to FA hopeful-signing Clint Boling).
The odds sound better than even the Jets go FA at one of hte guard positions. I liked Colon a lot, coming to the Jets. But the penalties were a big problem. Let's put it this way - I doubt the Pitt FO and CS were sorry they let him go when they saw how he did with the Jets.
Colon was a very good veteran stop gap signing. lots of fans see penalty flags and watch nothing else. so they think he's terrible. he's been pretty good at pass blocking. allowed only 1 sack and 3 QB hits all season. his run blocking has slipped some, but he's still a very physical road grader when he gets his hands in on a guy, and he doesn't take any shit from opposing defenses. but most of all, he's a tough, high character, team first, supportive leader on a team, who backs his teammates and coaches throughout turmoil. he's a big part of the reason we didn't see a whole lot of finger pointing or quitting as the season was spiraling in the wrong direction. we got good veteran value at low cost with Colon. i appreciated his efforts here, and wish him the best going forward. all that said, i understand the rationale to move on. it's time to rebuild the line, and we have the means to do it.
He needed to be replaced. Colon brings leadership to a team, but he isn't a very good guard any more. Hopefully the Jets are targeting someone (Franklin) in free agency to replace him.
That's what happens when you are bad at drafting. I have been concerned about the future of our offensive line for a few years now. The unit hasn't been good since we had Faneca and Woody. We lost them and replaced them with dogshit. We haven't been the same team on offense since their departure. Improve the line and many of our offensive problems will be magically fixed.
I think everyone likes Colon the person, just not the player. He was a penalty machine. Out of 64 starting guards in the NFL, PFF ranked Colon, Winters and Aboushi, all above 64th. Therefore, we need starting caliber guards.
Having him at this point with two years of experience from Winters and Aboushi and 1 year of Dozier waiting in the wings makes no sense. All three prove to be pretty good road graders but suffer in pass protection which comes with experience and technique. If you want a veteran guard to throw in there, spend the money to get Iupati.
