Rangers' fatal flaw heading in to the playoffs would have been the overall inability of their defense to make the first pass under pressure to exit the zone. Yandle is one of the best in the league at this. If AV can find a way to get him more than 3rd pairing minutes, this will be a great improvement.

However, if you told me we were trading Duclair, a 1st, and a 2nd to Arizona I would've expected OEL coming back. This really is like a '94 deal in that it's only going to be worth it if you win the Cup in the next two years with Yandle.

I'm not surprised Arizona wanted Duclair. They've probably been dying to put him with Domi since the WJC. And from the beginning I've preferred Buchnevich to Duclair, so this is a little easier to swallow.

I agree with Poe, Duclair should have stayed and gave them Miller

What put us behind the 8ball last year vs LA.

I like it. I think Hayes is a good player also, so losing Duclair doesn't bother me that much.

Sheppard trade means AV has no excuse to play Glass, which is the most important thing to happen today.

Ryan Callahan could learn a thing or two about being a team player from Matts Zuccarello. I'm just sayin'!

    8:32PM: Yandle will wear #93.
8:18PM: Keith Yandle was on Sportsnet 590 at 8PM:

    • On his first reaction, “I was actually at a birthday party with my oldest daughter and it was a little hectic and Donny called me and told me that a deal was done and I was pretty excited to be going to New York with how good of a team they are it was pretty special.”

    • How off guard were you caught, “It was maybe two days ago my agent said that some talks were going on and I didn’t think about it too much or know that much. When Donny told me that I was being traded I didn’t know who it was going to be too and then he said New York and I was pumped.”
    • On his time in Phoenix, “it’s great, a great place to play and live and the struggles this year has been a little tough. All around it’s a great place to live and raise a family and I got my feet wet in the NHL here. It’s tough to leave but going to a good situation.”
    • On his family and the rest of the season, “obviously, you get thrown right into it and I will be heading to NY tomorrow morning to play tomorrow night and focus on getting myself there to get myself ready. My family, get my kids out of their school and come as soon as possible.”
    • On Phoenix vs New York, “it’s pretty special to go to an Original Six team. When you talk to players and guys who were in NY, you hear how it’s a first class organization and it will be pretty special to play on a team that has such a long and real rich tradition. It will be cool for me.”
    • On his contact with the Rangers, “I have been on the phone and talking to everyone and the coaches, management. I had Ulf Samuelsson here in Phoenix, I am familiar with him and he was great for my career. Looking forward to working with him again. I know a couple of the players, Hayes is a young kid from Boston that I know, some of the guys like McDonagh and Stepan I met at USA Olympic tryout thing. I won’t be going in too blinded, I know some people and it will be a little bit easier.
    • On being traded early before the deadline, “Especially with playing tomorrow, get there and get ready for the game will be nice.”

I really like the trade. There likely wasn't room for Duclair with Kreider, Nash, Zucc, Hagelin and Miller on the long term contracts with MSL likely re-signing with the Rangers in the offseason and Buchnevich being in the mix as well. Someone was going to have to be moved eventually to make everything work, and that just happened to be Duclair. The loss of the Conditional 2016 1st and 2015 2nd is tough, but the Rangers draft really well and I think the reason why we have maintained a decent stable of prospects through trading all these high draft picks is because we draft really well.

Getting Yandle is a huge acquisition. Getting him at 2.6M is even bigger. The Rangers haven't had a true offensive defenseman this good since Leetch. He really helps solidify the PP and he's also a defensive upgrade over Moore. I liked the Sheppard deal. Hits, fights, has some skill and speed, and he can take face-offs. Stempniak didn't really fit on the fourth line, so trading him for a player who could help made sense. I like the Zuccarello contract. Way better than his rumored asking price the last few weeks.

Also, some potential good news. Someone on HFNYR claims that Glass might get cut tomorrow. Sounds like they might have a source telling them that.

    Kreider-Stepan-St. Louis
    Hagelin-Miler-Hayes
    Sheppard-Moore-Fast
    Klingberg

    McDonagh-Girardi
    Staal-Yandle
    Boyle-Klein
    Hunwick

    Hank

Sheppard is a center that's pretty good on faceoffs, so:

    Nash-Brassard-Zucc
    Kreider-Stepan-MSL
    Hagelin-Sheppard-Hayes
    Miller/Glass-Moore-Fast
    McDonagh-Girardi
    Yandle-Klein
    Staal-Boyle

These are the pairs I thought also, Yandle played 1st pair in Phoenix, unless AV wants lefty/righty on each pair...our PP just got alot better too with Yandle who is a great passer

AV doesn't like to put players on their off-side, but I think this is a case that warrants it. You have exactly four Top 4 defenseman. The other two guys are bottom pair defenseman for a contender. You have to find a way to get your best players out there against the top forwards in the league in the playoffs.

Matt, you still seem to be pretty low on JT Miller. He hasn't proven you wrong this season? For a rookie, I think he's been really good.
