this guy is amazing, gets suspended for the texts then supposedly rapes and sodomizes. Unbelievable. I hope it isn't true but it doesn't look good.

Lots of college hoops this 'bracket buster' weekend. Locally, toughest ticket in town is up in New Rochelle where two of the tiny titans of the MAAC conference square off again - Manhattan at Iona. Last game at Manhattan went down to the wire. Jaspers stumbled out of the gate this year but have rebounded to win 7 of their last 9 while Iona's on a 10-game winning streak.

    Tomorrow the big boys play:

    - #18 Arkansas at #1 Kentucky

    - Va. Tech. at #2 Virginia (Hokies with a near upset vs. Duke - not happening here)

    - BYU at #3 Gonzaga. Would be slightly interesting if the game were being played in Provo.

    - Syracuse at #4 Duke. 'Cuse (esp. Christmas) playing well of late; Duke sketchy of late.

    - #6 Villanova at Xavier . Xavier (like Miami, like UNC, et al) a dangerous albeit Jeckyl & Hyde type team.

    - Texas at #8 Kansas. Jayhawks should be primed and pissed coming off that fiasco at KSU.

    - #10 Northern Iowa at #11 Wichita St. ......z-z-z-z-z-z...

    - #12 Iown State at Kansas State. Another ranked opponent invades Manhattan: call *cough* "KSU Security!!"

    - Michigan at #14 Maryland. Terps coming off big upset of the Badgers. Possible let down?

    - #15 UNC at Miami. UNC face the unpredictible Hurricanes. Which team(s) show up?

    - #17 Louisville at Florida State. Louisville at Florida State.....lock up the cheerleaders...such is life in today's A.C.C.

    - #20 W. Va. at #19 Baylor.

    - Dayton at #22 VCU.

    - #23 Butler at DePaul.

    - Boise St. at #24 SDSU.

    other games:

    - G'town at St. John's. Both teams (esp. SJU) could use this game for 'bubble' purposes.
    - Rhode Island at La Salle. Rams quietly having a nice year in the A10.

misc.: the little Southland Conference may end up with three 20-win schools: Stephen A. Austin, Sam Houston St., and, if they can win their last 3-of-4 game which they should, S.F. Austin and Sam Houston St. would be joined by the Cardinals of the Incarnate Word. Word~!

Looks like SJU will beat Gtown today. Big win. Theyre solidly in the field now.

If any other team int he top 25, including Kentucky, lost at home to unranked BYU, they would fall out of the Top 25. However, because it is Gonzaga, they will probably rise a spot for their "great effort".

As I watched Gonzaga lose to a very good BYU team ( atleast they can play a top 20 team hard ), I couldn't help but notice how the WCC conference refs try to keep the Zags a number one seed in the NCAA tournament. If for no other reason than League respectability. BYU is good, so is Gonzaga but Gonzaga shouldn't be a number one seed now

Oh, would you please stop it, you WCC apologist. Their best win was against STANFORD, a team that isn't even going to qualify for the NCAA Tournament. They are NOT a good team.

Again, if any other top 10 team lost to BYU at home the way Gonzaga just did, they would have dropped at least 10 spots in the ranking.

I think St. Johns is one win away for an absolute NCAA lock.

Yes, by bracket-bolstering I didn't mean bracket-clinching. They should split their remaining two regular season games (a win at Marquette, a loss at Villanova) to go into the Big East tournament at 21-10. However should they close out losing their last two and go 0-1 in the Big East tournament to end up 20-12, I could then see them NIT-bound and the Lavin-grumbling returning.

Very cool event last week, had dinner with Derrick Coleman (one of my top 5 college players of all time) and PJ Carlesimo. Great great night and two of the most knowledgeable and candid basketball folks I've ever had the opportunity to do a dinner with.

As for Derrick, I've only met him twice before but never really talked to him. He sat next to me at dinner and he could not have been more gracious and open and heartfelt. I always took him for being a bit rough around the collar but he was actually very eloquent and truthful and forthcoming. He's from Detroit so he has a bit of that in him but he really spoke from the heart. Great stories about him as a 16 year old being taken under the wing of the Bad boy pistons, used to practice as a KID with Isiah (like his uncle) and Dumars and Mahorn and Laimbeer and Salley--I can't imagine. Dave Bing was like an uncle too--Bing was roommates with Boeheim and that's why he chose Syracuse. Loved Gervin, why he wore number 44. Loved his time in Syracuse, loved playing for Boeheim and with Seikaly (he's a DJ now--how crazy) and Sherman douglas and goes back often. When he got to NY as a 22 year old, a bunch of the Giants took him under his wing--LT and Pepper Johnson and that whole crew--used to stay at their houses after playing pool at LTs bar till 4 am. Admittedly not his smartest move but he was swept up in the lifestyle--couldn't resist. And even though when he was on the court he hated that Knick crew, he hung with Ewing and Oakley and Mason (gave a heartfelt hope he'd be ok). Had a bunch of of pretty revealing thing to say about today's game, KD in particular--"what is a stretch FOUR?" but was very touched that KD said as a kid he wanted to pattern his game after Derrick's--said he needed to develop that "dog" pointing to his heart, said Westbrook is they guy on that team that had the "dog' in him. Bunch of great stories about Roy Tarpley and Karl Malone--hated him after he gashed Isiah's eyebrow--every game thereafter he went out and blasted Malone with a hard foul within the first 30 seconds of a game--Malone was like "WTF?"

PJ was even more engaging--total recall about everything that happened in the old Big East, great stories and very opinionated about the college game today and the pros and his experience in both. Said college is so much easier because the coaches are in total control. Talked about Latrell and that whole choking incident--said he's seen him 100 times since then and they've never talked about it but he gets asked about it on the street every day. Was pretty open about all the investigations going on in college and defended Boeheim (there were some SU guys there but a bunch of St. John's and Seton Hall, OSU, Cinncy, Virginia and Vandy guys there), said every big time program in college has similar issues--actually said probably the cleanest Calipari has ever been is now because that program has become so atmospheric they don't need to do anything on the edge. But the NCAA investigation against Syracuse was a personal witchhunt against Boeheim because he doesn't give a shit about them anymore--everyone knew about Fab Melo and the Oneida Y stuff and easy classes like at another iconic school done in every college program that recruits kids that deserve to play college BB but aren't there academically. Said the investigation should have been concluded years ago but since SU couldn't continue to exist under that haze, they had to press the issue and get it over with. He said what they and what basically every other program does is not right, not wrong, it just is and if you don't think so, you're either naive or just purposefully ignoring it.

Also said Gonzaga was his Final Four dark horse :D

If you're a big college BB fan, if you ever had a chance to have a sit down or dinner with PJ, do it. A great speaker and basketball historian.

Me and Derrick. Happy, healthy, on top of his game now.

Kind of weird because that dinner was last Tuesday night and the morning before Malone was on Boomer and Carton and he was seriously dogging Coleman and Chris Webber. Personal stuff.

Coleman just said that Isaih was his hero growing up in Detriot and 6-9 Malone threw a vicious elbow at diminutive Thomas opening up a massive gash above his eyebrow requiring multiple stitches and Coleman, being the loyal son, hated Malone thereafter and tried to bash him every chance he got. Literally ran at him every game within the first minute he ever faced him.

Interesting that Malone bashes him now.

    Pussy.
