It was a normal Friday morning when I headed to work today. I had a performance review at a 11 am that I felt pretty decent about. I'm a sales manager and I hit all my sales objectives for the first half which isn't bad for only being on the job 9 months.

    Well was I far off...

Boss smacked me around pretty good. He said I didn't have the proper "leadership" skills for the role and I should start looking for another job.

Needless to say I thought I was fired right then and there, but apparently not. He said that he needs to go through "the process".

I asked what the process is....

Boss replied that he will conduct monthly reviews

I asked what I need to accomplish to keep my job

He said I needed to show leadership traits

I asked how do I show leadership traits

He said to follow the leadership model outlined

Finally I got to the good stuff...

If in three months you don't complete the performance improvement plan you are fired... most people don't make it through this and I don't think you will so I suggest you find a new job soon.

    My question:

Is this normal? I have never been fired before. Should I even go to work?

The bolded indicates to me they are right about "not exhibiting leadership traits". It's okay, some are better off just doing a job and not being put in a position where they must manage others

I wouldn't quit. At the very least you have 3 months to find a new job without having to explain how/why you got fired when the next job asks about your previous employment history or explain that you didn't want to go through their "improvement process" so you never went back.

I have been laid off before, not fired...My answer to your question:
I'm work in a Sales atmosphere, but am in Sports Marketing specifically in a big corporate company. It's a different field that intertwines with Sales, however I can tell you that Sales has gone through a 85% complete turnover throughout the 4 years I've worked there. And I mean people have come in for 1 year and then been fired or laid off. I can tell you that it sounds like your bosses are not too high on you anymore and want you to leave or they are trying to find some way to fire you.

Basically some of my friends were let go even though they hit their numbers...Its all about politics, maybe your salary is too high compared to what they can hire and work with, but mainly its about politics (that is what they mean by leadership). Unless you really aren't their cup of tea when it comes to communicating as a Sales Manager or managing others.

I think it's all a scheme for you to be pushed out.

You are on probation status pretty much. If you REALLY want the job, just do your best bust your ass - hopefully you get off the probation period and move on with the same job. Or you could use that time to find a new job in the mean-time since you will still get a check.

Tried sales, couldn't do it - hated it.

Yeah don't fucking quit if they basically want to push you out...Go about your job normally. Also send resumes out everywhere, interview...And then get laid off by them. At least if you are fired you can collect Unemployment, cant do that if you quit I think.

I've seen people escape the probation period in the past, lucky fuckers good for them, but man chances of it happening - slim to none it seems.

Sounds like he wants to replace you with someone he may already have in mind. You should start looking for a new job.

You will be fine. Believe in yourself.

I was fired once for going out and getting hammered, let my sober friend drive my company vehicle and he proceeded to slam into a taxi.
    Hope this helped.

I may sound like a dick thing to do, but they are giving you a chance...or at least a little time.
If you think it's an honest chance and not just to see you jump through hoops, try to take a leadership course. Let them know you're making an effort at improvement.

Don't get too cozy with your workers. It may not be your performance, but that of your employees, that bothers them.

I think the 3 months is sugar coating, you'd better act quick.

Of course if you try to be more of a "leader" your employees will complain that you're a dick, and they fire you anyway.

Give it your best effort, let the chips fall where they may.

    Holy shit hahahaha
I don't know how I wouldn't have run that fuck over, lol

I saw a cabbie jump out of his cab with a bat and attack the car behind him on Fordham Rd, and then he took off, many years ago. Dude went berserk.

That really sucks man, I've been placed on probation before for my lack of being "a professional" and while I survived it really left a bad taste in my mouth. I was also demoted from my position but I was not fired. There's a saying my dad taught me when I was younger and it's "don't shit where you eat" well I hadn't even squatted down yet and I got burned. It took some time but I waited for the right opportunity to find a new job and I fucked them because I left at the busiest time of year with no replacement.... oh well fuck you.

My advice to you is this, if you really like working there then take a leadership class on your own time and get some tips on how to be more effective. I'm sure you could find one somewhere maybe a community outreach program or even the local community college will offer them and hammer down those points. I'd also make sure word gets back to the boss that you are doing this so it shows that you really care about improving and more importantly care about his company. That being said don't be the one to tell him, that makes you look like a bitch.

If you can live without the job fuck them, you've got 3 months to find something else and still earn a paycheck. One of the other great lessons my dad taught me was don't quit a job unless you have one to go to and don't get fired from a job unless you have money in the bank to get you through until you do find a new one. If you don't have the money now find ways to make sure you do in a few months. Cut back on everything so you can at least not be stuck living on unemployment.

I don't know your situation but if you have kids and a family my heart goes out to you, it's a real shitty thing that you are meeting your goals and your boss is still being a dick to you. Don't give him the satisfaction of firing you, stick it up his ass and do things your way. It took me 35 years to start doing things my fucking way and not giving a shit what other people wanted and I am much happier for it. I'm still not rich but I am living the life I want to live and doing things the way I want them to be done.

Best of luck to you on your journey man....

Ive been in sales all my life. I will tell you this. The performance plan is hard to survive. And you'll feel like an asshole the whole time. Don't quit but if I was you , I would be looking for a new job and interviewing as much as possible. Once you do find something, tell your boss to go fuck his mother.

Had similar situation happen to me. Went upstairs with the big wigs and was told I needed to cut staffing costs by 30% on my next monthly report or I was toast.
I did it, everyone hated me. People complained that I was ruining their lives ( they couldn't pay their bills, kids couldn't have a christmas, shit was brutal). I was even pulling free shifts myself in the hospital just to cut down on overtime just so these cocksuckers could meet their fairytale bottom line.

Well, my monthly report went upstairs and so did I. Old fucks were all congratulating me on such a great job I had done on cutting the costs by more than 30%. Felt like I was ontop of the world. Called the wife a told her we had nothing to worry about, went out to a nice dinner, bought a nice cigar and celebrated the night thinking I had saved my career.

The next day I received a phone call ( on Saturday) informing me that I had been laid off. My boss was replacing me with his son in law. I never had a snowball chance in hell no matter how well I did. Start looking for another job immediately, there is nothing worse than the stink of unemployment when you are trying to get a new job. Don't burn any bridges if you don't have to just be prepared no matter how well you do you are probably already screwed.

I think your days are numbered. "Need to go through the process" is very telling (and completely idiotic thing for your boss to say). What it really means is "we need to go through the process so that you have no legal case against us after we fire you".
    Update resume and start looking.
