fair enough, I don't have any idea. lets wait and see........but we both know how FA works dude. Teams over pay for other team's junk with the promise that its going to work out. Not that Harris is "junk" but hes very slow and very one dimensional. Hes going to want more money than hes worth....
doesn't everyone want more money than they are worth? again, I have no argument if someone wants to get rid of him for football/age/cap reasons I just don't like the bashing as if he never did anything for us.
yes, I already said everyone does and that's why 90% of FA goes like I explained. that fact, combined with his age and how far we are from really contending, it makes ZERO sense to bring him back unless its a bargain deal-which it wont be.
If he wants too much money, then he should walk - I don't think Harris will want to command a lot of money in the free market due to him not being versatile, but if Buffalo and Rex want to overpay him - then so be it.
I don't disagree w/ any of this but I think he's going to wind up back here for a few more years. Hopefully it is a cap friendly deal.
Cimini @ ESPN says that four-years, $24 million contract, including $12 million in guarantees is the neighborhood. He's looking at recently similar 31+yr old Karlos Dansby and D'Qwell Jackson contracts. Jeez ---- didnt know it would be that much. Problem is - we don't have any solid FA options and we are drafting for so many other holes (thank you Idzik and Tannenbum). Might have to bite the bullet on this. Harris should give us a hometown discount after paying out the full $36 million over the past 4 yrs.
OMG! I was about to click "like" on your post when I saw that nyjunc had. The sky is falling, the sky is falling. It scares me that we agree on something. First time. Maybe I had better re-think your post or my position or something! LOL
I agree with you that he's been one of our better LBers lately (although that's not saying much), but agree with jonnyd that he should go if he won't sign a cheap deal to stay, and I don't see any way that he will. With Miami, Atlanta, another team or two and most likely Buffalo interested in his services, he's gonna demand and I'm gonna guess, get a contract probably in the neighborhood of $6-8 million per year, and he's just not worth it. He sucks in coverage and leaves a lot of plays on the field because of his lack of foot speed. He plays hard, is a sound tackler, has been a great citizen and teammate, and I wish he would finish out his career as a short-term starter for reasonable money while the rookie we draft gets ready. That's not gonna happen imo. Just because we way overpaid him last time, he's not gonna give us any home team discount. He's gonna want another big payday or maybe a chance to finish on a team that can win it all. For what he will sign for, the Jets could quite possibly sign two starters. They could probably sign Mason Foster and maybe an OG like Carpenter or Boling for what it's starting to look like Harris will get.
There are options. Someone mentioned Mason Foster. He's not as good as Harris, but is younger and will probably be a good bit cheaper. AJ Hawk was released by the Packers. The market may not be as big for him. I'm hoping the Jets draft an ILB somewhere in the 2nd or 3rd round, and that he won't take as long to develop as Davis did. I'd love to see the FA we sign start for no more than one season, and ideally only about a half season until the rookie takes over.
Really wish we could find someone younger to fill his shoes. I'm really not looking forward to giving Harris another big payday.
No. Jeremiah George from Iowa State was a 5th round draft pick, but was cut in early September, signed to the PS the next day, then was signed off the PS by the Jaguars.
Mason Foster? From the Bucs? That's also a severe down-grade but I see what you are saying about providing depth. I think this draft we need to look for an ILB - it's been too long since we've drafted one - preferably one that can cover.
oooh, misjudged the situation… damn… maybe a one year 6 million dollar deal to play stop gap while we draft Stephone anthony and give him a year to adjust?… or are the jets looking at Harris as a moderate longterm answer? the plot thickens...
Yes, him. Since I don't follow other teams and watch many other games other than the Jets, Packers and Panthers, I didn't know about him, but someone brought him up in another thread. I think maybe it was my thread on under-the-radar FAs. http://www.nfl.com/player/masonfoster/2495281/profile I know that stats aren't everything, but he's only 25 and his stats look pretty decent. He has started in 54 of the 57 games in which he has appeared. He's been in on 343 tackles in 54 games, had 6 sacks, 7 passes defensed, had 5 interceptions (3 in 2013, 2 of which he returned for TDs, one an 85-yarder), and forced two fumbles. http://www.nfl.com/player/davidharris/2495621/profile Now, compare that to David Harris. In his first four years, Harris played in 59 games starting 52 of them. During that same 4-year span, playing in two more games than Foster, he had 428 tackles, 14.5 sacks, 10 passes defensed, 2 interceptions, and 4 forced fumbles. Harris is obviously better, but it's hard to really compare the two since they play in different systems, on different teams with different coaches. Since Foster has an 85 yard interception TD return, I think it's safe to say that if nothing else, he is considerably fleeter of foot than Harris, and perhaps behind our DL with better coaching, he could approach Harris' levels, and make some plays of which Harris would be incapable. I think that Foster would be a capable starter until the rookie was ready.
123, 123, 124 Those are the number of tackles Harris has made over the last 3 years. It's hard to replace that kind of productivity. For sure Harris is going to continue to be a liability in pass coverage. But I just don't know who Macc could draft or sign that would be an adequate replacement. Rolando McClain, who is maybe considered, the top FA at ILB had 81 tackles in 13 games in what was considered a good year for him and comes with a lot more question marks as far as work ethic, consistency, and off the field issues. Harris also seems like a great locker room guy, unselfish, etc. and a leader on the defense. He's also been the guy responsible for relaying the defensive playcall to other 10 guys on the field, getting guys set, calling for adjustments on the fly if necessary: http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/f...ve-coordinator-fast-packers-article-1.1937201
it also goes to show how under appreciated Harris is by some on this board. he's the top FA ILB, and yet some speak of him like he can't play. lol it's absurd. there's a reason so many teams are interested. he's twice the player AJ Hawk is. he's consistently far outproduced Foster, who was also injured for most of last season (and plays 4-3 OLB). of course it all depends on pricetag for Harris. 5M per range, not locked in too long, i'd jump on it.
David Harris was a big contributor..........for giving up 3rd and longs with his piss poor coverage skills.
