I gotta agree with you on Petty. In my Mock revision, I chose him if the Jets miss out on Mariota, and I grabbed White at 6. Mostly, I agree with the fact that his "ceiling" could be quite high, but he could also be an absolute failure like you said. He's very boom or bust in my opinion. Also, like you said on Grayson, I don't like him as much after watching his tape, and I wasn't impressed with him at the Senior Bowl. His biggest flaw in my eyes isn't the offense that he comes from, but rather his inaccuracy on some passes. Instead of comparing him to Geno based on offense, I think his inability to hit open receivers from within the 20 is much more like Geno. He seems like a much better field general (for lack of a better term) than Geno is, and I weigh that quite heavily in my assessment of QBs. Not that this holds ANY weight, but Petty has that look I just want to punch in the mouth . Don't know why, his face just brings it out in me! Anyways, back to Mannion. Your assessment seems legitimate on Mannion after watching his game videos, especially in regards to regressing. I will give him somewhat of a pass though, his offense was pretty piss poor, not just his skilled guys, but his line was also pretty bad. However, I don't think he lacks athleticism like many have said on here. To me, he plays like many other lanky QBs, where everything seems long and drawn out. Just an option late round if they miss out on the big 2. The next guy I want to dig into is Brett Hundley, but I'll save that for another time/thread unless people want to chime in. The Jets HAVE to take a QB with one of their picks, so regardless of where it ends of being, they need to grab one.
I actually really like him. But who knows I think taking a flier on him in the later rounds could work. Every thing is a crap shoot though. no one ever knows
Thanks for that. The problem I have with any of the later round guys this year and in most past years is none of them are very good. Every QB in 2013 was shit. First to 7th round. This year after the top 2 all of them (save a massive flyer on Petty) is shit. Hundley I wanted to love but I'm underwhelmed. I loved Mannion 2 years ago but last year I was meh. I thought there were 5-6 guys in 2014 who could be legit QBs. I still think McCarron will take that job away from that dog Dalton. Garapolo could follow Brady as a very good QB. The fuck we passed on Teddy and Carr will haunt me to my grave unless we get Mariota (I'm 55 lol). Petty is the only guy I could see being a Favre idiot clone. With a lesser arm. Thank God we beat the Dolphins and the Titans. Fucking idiot Jet fans 'gotta win every game we can'. Douchebags. _
Last season I would have even settled for Mettenberg, who I still think will be an adequate, but not flashy, QB.
Mannion has too slooooow of a release and for a big guy doesn't have a strong arm.. His accuracy on the deep ball is also sub par.. His footwork for a QB that played mostly under centre is flat out bad. Petty reminds me of Fales.. Although a better prospect than Mannion he is accurate on the short and intermediate routes but struggles with arm strength and accuracy on the deep ball. His footwork is decent..
Yeah but none of that other stuff matters. He took snaps from under center. That is THE most important skill and talent a QB can have. _
I think the other skills have their own importance. But I must say that aside from the people on this board saying his arm is subpar is just inaccurate. Mannion makes all his throws pretty seamless to the sidelines, and his mid range throws are also sharp. Biggest problem I tend to agree with lies in his footwork, but it's not in his drop back from under center. When Mannion is forced to move laterally outside of the pocket he's a bit stiff, but that can be worked on. This past season he threw a bunch of passes off his back foot and didn't transfer his weight to drive the ball. Again, this is something that can be improved, and when given time he looks pretty good. However, he didn't get much time this past season. For the doubters, look at his ASU game tape from this past season. He looked very poised against the blitz in that game, and a crappy Oregon State team beat ASU in a big upset.
I was joking. There are dudes on this board who think taking snaps from under center or playing in a pro style offense as a 20 year old against other 20 year old college kids is more important than arm talent, accuracy, athleticism, mobility, football IQ, work ethic and leadership. _
Bruce Arians, QB Guru that helped Big Ben and Andrew Luck begs to differ. No one said anything is more important then the other, but fundamentals are very important at the next level. No NFL coach wants to teach a QB how to huddle and take snaps under center. As you know snaps under center has a direct correlation on the success of the running game.
Yes, they'd rather teach someone to learn to throw more accurately or be athletic or be smarter and be a better leader. Snaps and drops are SO much more important. _
Just saying, teaching someone the basics all over again - puts everything else in the backseat. Let's not act like it's not important now.
No one is saying it's not important. The rest of the stuff is SO much more important. It's like they say in basketball--you can't teach tall. You can't teach what Mariota can do. You can teach Mariota snaps from under center and drop backs. _
