Thanks for correcting me. I clearly remember that Buffalo win costing us a player that I really wanted - you're right that it was Bush not Ryan. In hindsight, the D'Brick pick was pretty solid. Only player that would have definitely been better is Haloti Ngata who went to Baltimore around the 9th pick I think.
When did mariota become this can't miss franchise quarterback? Yeah he has tools for success, but the NFL isn't college, and defenses are much more complex. He has to adapt to the an NFL system, and there's no way we know of he can do that. Plus can we even trust idzik (or whoever) to make the right pick at any slot? We need talent everywhere! Everybody on the jets is playing/coaching for their job, it was nice to see us actually win a close game (barely), instead of blowing them like we have been doing this year. 1st road win of the year, and first time in a while actually winning in Tennessee. I'll treat this W like all the other 2 W's we have, with pride.
All very good points. With Mariota, his stats are pretty mind blowing. I mean 2 INT's in a whole season?? Wow! But you're absolutely right - there is no guarantee that his skills will transfer to a Pro style system. I guessing that Mariota, Winston and Cooper are all off the board by the time we pick. I would be content with grabbing the OT Scherrf from Iowa or maybe trading down a bit and getting a CB. I like the kid from Oregon.
Even though we're most likely not going to have a top 5 pick we will probably be in the top 10, and still have a lot of firepower to trade down in the later rounds if need be. I just don't want to see us trade up, trading multiple high round picks for an unknown commodity. Shore up some holes in the off season, pick BPA, and infuse the roster with talent.
Why are so many people under the illusion that the first 2 picks in the 2015 draft will be QBs. I don't buy it. This is not the race for Luck and consolation price for RGIII of years past. Neither Winston nor Mariota are at the elite level of Luck. It very conceivable that one or more non QBs will be selected with the first 3 picks, even more likely that Winston will be there at five or six, and when faced with it, it is very probable that the Jets would pass on him. And the boos will continue for another year. IMHO The best possible pick we can SELECT, bar none, is hitting the lotto with a HC that can turn this ship around, first and foremost. If that comes joined at the hip with a new GM the better. On a separate subject, even though I have been very critical of Idzik, I think 2015 will show that the 2014 draft was a lot better than the early reports. Pryor will be great in his natural position of SS, Amaro will be a stud, MacDougle can be a huge upgrade over Wilson, IK can play, and we have added a couple of nice Special team contributors. I think 2014 was a combination of disastrous injuries, players playing out of position, overly conservative free agency, nutcase CB, poor WR selection in the draft, deteriorated performance by our QB and OL, pathetic game planning by our offense, and unwilling to change our defense schemes to match our strengths. Changing the HC staff can go a long way into fixing that. Getting a solid hold the fort QB and a game plan to support it can do the rest till we find our own Luck. We need to see improvements on this team far exceeding the selection with our #1 pick, and for all we know, could very well still be Winston...if the new leadership wants him with the 5th pick.
I just want to bump and quote this post, because we are starting to see how those 2 wins are killing us. We are still in desperate need for a Franchise QB, and now it's looking like both of the guys in this draft will now be long gone before our pick. We could trade up, but we wouldn't need to w/o two MEANINGLESS victories last December. Hopefully something works out in our favor, but we definitely lost a good opportunity in this draft.
Going from the 3rd pick to 6th pick isn't too big of a deal, Should every team play their backups when they're eliminated from the postseason? We weren't getting Winston with the second or third pick and Mariota still has a slim chance of making it to our pick. Maybe we have the second pick if we lose the Tennessee game and the Dolphins game but there is so much depth and great players at the top of this draft any pick in the top 8 has huge value. If Mac knows what the hell he's doing we'll still get a great player who has the chance to be as good as the guy taken a few spots ahead of him.
There may be depth at the top of this draft, but you still need a franchise QB to win and we are not currently in position inn Getting one of the top guys because of two meaningless wins. I don't expect the players to stop trying, but people on here who celebrated those wins were being very short sighted
One of the nice things about being a Jets fan is that we tend to screw up the Fins chances lately. This after Shula and the Fins royally screwed us a couple of times in the 70's and 80's not to mention to ol' fake spike in 1994. The day the Jets intentionally lose a game to the Fins will be a good day to start thinking about whether all the agita of being a Jets fan is worth it.
wins never kill you, good players can be found anywhere. the top 2 QBs are far from sure things and we may still wind up w/ one of them. NEVER root for your team to lose. Good organizations find players no matter where they draft, bad ones screw it up no matter where they draft
The Colts didn't get Peyton Manning and Andrew Luck by finishing with the 4th worst record. No one is ever a guarantee, but missing out on either of these two guys is NOT good and winning two meaningless games took us out of contention for either of them (it would seem currently). You need a franchise QB to win, and we may have missed out on two guys who could be that because we won two meaningless games.
Peyton Manning and Andrew Luck aren't in this draft and we went 1-15 in 1996 and just needed BP to assure Peyton he would take him and Peyton would have been ours. The best QB in the league, and possibly history, was taken in the 6th rd. the other guy who is talked about as greatest of all time was taken in rd 3. Talent is everywhere.
Can you please explain, other than fan mentality, why you bumped this? Because the only two reasons I can see are that a. You wanted fans to root against the team and hope for losses and b. You wanted the team to intentionally lose a football game. Are there other reasons I haven't mentioned?
I see nothing wrong with bumping this thread. To tank or not to tank is a legit discussion. It's more relevant as we close in on the draft. My take, when the season was f*cked beyond redemption I don't mind a few more losses. That being said I'm a TV guy and not a stadium guy so there's that to take into account too.
Looking back at those last two wins we got at the end of the season, I'm missing the point of where the upside is? We dropped down to picking 6th, we gained nothing in the standings and now may well miss out on both blue chip Qb prospects AND the highest rated WR in the draft. Those two wins meant nothing except we screwed ourselves.
the upside is winning, players play to win, coaches coach to win. we have no idea what the prospects in the draft will do. perfect example, in 2005 the board wanted us to tank to get Reggie Bush. we won week 17 and it pushed us down and we missed out. we got Brick and a guy every bit as good as Bush in rd 4. Good players can be found anywhere.
