Paul Brown founded the Cleveland Browns. So they are actually named after him (who after being ousted by Art Modell went on to found the Bengals). So it is kind of weird, but that's why it is what it is.
Yet they embrace the success of a totally different franchise as if it meant something. Maybe the Orioles should try the same thing.
ahh rebranding, you really cant blame them as their logo was pretty piss poor. just so long as they dont change the unis too much it wont annoy me. i happen to like their uniforms and they stand out from the rest of the horseshit that is out there today.

It's weird that The 1 team is named after him, and the rival team has their stadium named after him. Why wouldn't the Browns change their name after Paul Brown left? I guess it was a different era back then, but it just makes sense to me. Is the Browns vs Bengals rivalry a big deal? Or are they more like 2 different teams that just happen to play each other? It just seems embarrassing imo that the Browns would keep that name, despite the Brown family working for their rival team.
It's definitely strange. I never researched into how Modell obtained control of the Browns and ousted Paul Brown. But I do know Brown was pissed. Initially there wasn't a rivalry between the Bengals and the Browns (one was in the AFL and the other was in the NFL) other than the interstate rivalry and Paul Brown's hatred toward Art Modell. When Cleveland moved to the AFC they became division rivals. So their rivalry was pretty intense being that it was an interstate, division rivalry where the two owner despised each other. Why Modell never changed the Browns name, I have no idea. So, the rivalry is a much bigger deal than two teams that happen to play each other, but it doesn't have the prestige as a lot of rivalries because quite frankly both teams have stunk for so long, and rarely have been competitive at the same time.
Even if they do both play poorly, it's still a crazy story. If Woody took over the Bills in a similar light, wouldn't you despise them much more than you do now?

The Patriots rebranded, it was not popular with fans, but it didn't do any harm. The Browns should rebrand and I suggest the pile of warm, happy excrement.
It was a bunch of different things that caused the rift between Modell and Brown, mainly power struggle stuff, but the thing that happened just previously to Brown being fired was when they drafted Ernie Davis (first ever black Heisman winner) in the first round in '62 and shortly after that Davis was diagnosed with leukemia. Modell brought in his own doctors for a private and bullshit evaluation and cleared Davis to play but Brown wouldn't let him suit up because he knew he was too sick to play.

I like it. I don't really care about logos because I'd never buy the stuff but the color change to a more vibrant orange and a brown facemask with no other blatant changes to a classic helmet work for me. _
