He's looking for a new red herring argument since the under center and footwork argument looks like it's a no longer a go.
I think the Jets will definitely sign a vet FA. I'm hoping for Moore or Hill or Fitzpatrick, and consign Geno to the backup position, with hopefully Mariotta holding the clipboard in 2015. I understand wanting to draft 3 QBs, but if they don't get Mariota, I'm not sure there's any other QB on whom is worth using a draft pick. I'm definitely tired of drafting defense, although we're going to have to bite the bullet as we need some young OLBs, another ILB, CBs and a FS. Some of those positions can possibly (hopefully!!) be filled with FAs this season, but I imagine that some picks over the next year or two will be spent to address those needs.
Joe, if Winston/Mariota are drafted before the Jets get their pick, do you think Petty could be an alternative? I think he could be as good a pick as any as a project rookie that sits the bench for a year or two and learns to play in the NFL.
^^^ Pulse (nice avatar btw), while Petty indoors in shorts showed his physical tools, I still don't know if he can learn to go through progressions beyond the 'one read only' that Briles' offense afforded him (forcing a lot of man-island coverage = pre-snap reads). If not he's just another Brandon Weeden in the long run and you're back to square one looking for your QB. Briles' stretched out version of the spread is just that more removed from the NFL so it's a tough call. Only thing I did see was good size, good arm and a little better feet than I originally thought - then again, again he was indoors in shorts. Me I woulldn't draft him before the 4th round if I were going to take a chance on him. Too great a distance between Baylor-style and NFL-compatible to make an (uneducated ) guess here.
Thanks for the reply Joe... the avatar is my girlfriend (i wish! ) Anyway I think thats the question on him, whether he can make that second and third read. In the games I've watched he seems to get rid of the ball very quickly and his mechanics are such that if he is smart enough to read pre-snap defenses and make the correct decision on throwing the ball he has the arm strength to be very effective as a pocket passer. He is athletic, but he is not a running QB, so in order to transition to the NFL he is going to have to rely on his ability to detect the pass rush and deliver the ball quickly. So many of these guys fail because they try to keep a play alive with their feet and make poor decisions (Geno.) Petty does have the athleticism to elude the pass rush, but he is not a statue out there. Anyway I think if the Jets selected Cooper/White in the first, a quality RB/OL or CB in the second and Petty in the third I would be happy.
Not at all, I am not discrediting his performance, I mentioned it was very good - but in comparison to Winston...
Mariota and Winston's were not close. Mariota was by far the better athlete, his arm strength was on par with Winston, his accuracy was better and his footwork looked fine.
Winston blew away Mariota today. He separated himself big time. The only thing Mariota had was his 40 yard dash, which no one really gives a shit about
Better accuracy and better footwork. My personal opinion and the opinion of many scouts according to recent reports.
I can also see Winston has sped up his release - that ball is coming out quicker. Both are improved QBs, but Winston is still more advanced as a passer.
Like I said, serious homer nonsense. If anyone blew anyone away at the combine it was Mariota blowing Winston away. Neither one happened though and they both did what they had to do to keep there stock high.
I think Winston solidified the number 1 slot, but Mariota did well too. Hopefully not good enough to make Tennessee pick him!
Ok. We won't discuss the amazing interviews he had, or that many coaches and scouts compared his football IQ to that of Peyton Manning. Or that some scouts said that his interview was the best they had ever given. Mariota blew him away. Carry on
I am in no way bashing Mariota. I want Winston over anyone but if we can't get him, I want Mariota immediately. I never said Mariota was bad. In fact, I think he had a very good workout. In my opinion, Winston blew him away. When coaches and scouts walk away in "awe" after seeing him and interviewing him, that's something special.
