OMG We do we need a QB!! I say do what Idzik did not do which is put together a package and move up to get Mariota or Winston. Watching combine now and they both are blue chip. Bowles in stands thinking (please talk to Mac and say goodbye to Geno!)
I don't believe the Eagles will trade up 18 spots to snag Mariota. He'll be the next franchise QB for the Jets.
They're not gonna say goodbye to Geno this year. You can just forget about that. It would be dumb to give up on a young, cheap QB who has shown flashes, and you have an OC who is known for bringing out the best in players. I'm sure they will look to bring in competition and barring a miraculous change, will move on next year, but I don't see any way that he's going anywhere this year. If they get Mariota, he needs to sit for a year in all likelihood. They will need a starter and a backup.
If one of the teams in front of us wants to move back there is no reason we should not be the team moving up. We have a dire need and are in the drivers seat being the team with the highest pick.
Every throw was perfect from Winston. C'mon Nick Marshall and Bryce Petty? I was going to post the differences as Mariota looked really good as well, but Nick Marshall / Petty are trash so why bother?
The bold is NOT true. Off the top of my head, I can think of the 5 step out to the right sideline that he threw late and to the inside. Mayock said of that throw that if he was playing Cleveland Joe Hayden would have been dancing in the end zone. There was also an inside slant from the left he missed. He clapped his hands in frustration after that one.
I only saw 1 or 2, the Joe Haden comment included. I had to see receivers dive for some of Mariota's throws. Mariota's footwork did look better then I expected.
I'm Damn near gettin' on my knees and Praying He falls to us...and then I'll definitely throw myself on the ground Praying and begging that we take him. Hope we can nab Bradford on the cheap too
Like I said, Winston is the best QB in this draft and a rare talent. I want him to fall so bad but it ain't happening. Trade to the first pick Maccagnan!!!!!!
Yes that miraculous change is far from coming....and I don't even see the "flashes" you refer to and the old mantra of GS getting help from an OC is well played out. You have or you don't, my friend. So a free agent to take over (just about any FA lol) and not see Smith throw ints is going to better for all of us. Let's face it, without a QB who is decent and all your offensive talent other than RB is wasted! I am sick of drafting defense? Aren't you? The Jets should grab 3 QB s to make up for the past 2 years snafus IMHO lol.
All missed/bad throws aren't equal. I need to re-watch to confirm but from I can remember, Mariota's misses were acceptable w/in the context of their respective drills. I know he overthrew a 9 route and threw an out too far to the outside. Overthrows are some what expected on deep sideline routes at the Combine as you have no familiarity with the WR you are throwing to. And if you are going to miss an out, it's best to miss to the outside than inside.
IMHO on this cold, snowy day: Jameis Winston: Throw in a Red Lobster franchise as part of his bonus if needed. Physically the complete package. Pro arm with a mature touch when needed. Sets up and plants ('roots') very well - very good footwork for a sturdy beast of his size. Marcus Mariotta: Very nice arm as well. His drop back was the smoothest of all. His feet during the crossover steps of his drop back stayed closest to the ground (i.e. got to his plant position quickly and smoothly). If nothing else, this kid is light years ahead of our man Geno in this regard. Tampa Bay should have their head examined if they don't draft Winston; same goes as well for any QB-strapped team _______ (select one) should they decide to pass on Mariota as well imo. Different packages these two, but such serious talent and potential these two represent. Blake Simms: Size issues and average arm forces him to have to 'load up' (slow up) his release. Nick Marshall: this is somewhat of a token appearance in the throwing drills (projects to be a CB - some teams want to see his potential as a passer in an emergency situation): hitchy, sidewinder-ish release. Sean Mannion: slow feet, esp. his first 2 steps going back into his setup. Has a slight 'windmill' in his release. Has a good, not great arm nor a very quick release. Would need a very clean, unobstructed pocket. Pass (no pun int.). Bryce Petty: Aside from his Art Briles' extreme 'one-look' spread system and accuracy concerns in some games, today outside of maybe one or two throws Petty's physical skills jumped out. And legler82, I'm going to respectfully disagree with you a little bit with respect to Petty's dropback and set up. I thought his footwork was pretty decent especially geting back into a solid plant-and-release position…..some others (besides Winston & Mariota) would complete their dropback then waste time with 'choppy steps' while getting into their plant & release position but not Petty. I thought Petty put those two footwork components together pretty cleanly. And not surprisingly, his arm is big boy good.
I thought Petty's drops and mechanics were inconsistent. Some were text book, better than Winston and Mariota's best IMO, and others were sloppy. What I liked most about Winston and Mariota today was the consistency of their drops and mechanics. Considering Mariota just started practicing drops, I came away way more impressed with his day.
No doubt, Jameis and Marcus separated themselves from the pack in their footwork. What I was saying was that Perry (who btw, I've never been crazy about) coming out of an extreme option set (Art Briles spreads his WRs extremely wide while faking the run to keep the safeties/LBs upfield and force the DBs to play more 'island' coverage, thus the 'one read') showed that he was capable of sharpening his backpedal away from center, i.e. that once away from such an extreme version of the spread under Briles that he's maybe not neccessarily a one-trick-pony. My concerns with him is his accuracy. On one occassion in particular, I remember him inaccurately throwing a long fade out of bounds in the endzone during the Senior Bowl to an open receiver and whining about the WR being out of bounds like it was the WRs fault. Granted he didn't work with the guy all year but still, it was kinda ugly. Bottom line: time will tell if he moves up in someone's estimation from a 3rd to a 2nd.
