Post is spot on. Letting Powell go would be a mistake. He should be given a 1.5mm deal over 2 years. We've got too many holes right now and too few draft picks. He's been a warrior for this team and rookie running backs often struggle with pass protection.
Creating an EXTRA hole to fill on a team with plenty of holes to fill already, is about as wise as me breaking something in my house just to go to a store to replace it because its filled with similar items. Whether the draft is filled with great RBs is about as relevant to us currently as the price of tea in China.
Love Powell, he's a solid player who has done good things. However if there's going to be a big market for him, I think he's going to end up getting overpaid. I'd much rather go after Spiller for hopefully equal money or draft one of the RBs in the deepest RB class I can remember.
He is a free agent, the hole is already there. We need two RBs and getting at least one in this draft is a good idea.
Not entirely true. Right now we are the only ones that can negotiate with him. That's like saying the broncos have a hole at WR now with DT or cowboys with Dez Bryant. The hole is created on March 10th
Powell is not a great pass protector though. He's very average at everything. Like i've been saying, he doesnt do any one particular thing really really well. Ivory is a great runner, IMO. What the Jets need to compliment that, is a speed guy who can create in space and catch the ball out of the backfield. Thats what we were hoping to get with CJ2K. We didn't. That's why a guy like Spiller makes sense. I'm not saying that there isnt a spot on this team for a steady player like Powell, there is, but the Jets need to add somebody who can do a little more then he is really capable of doing. They need to get more explosive, especially with a journeyman/rookie/or below average QB which we will most likely have going into next season.
Manish Mehta @MMehtaNYDN Sources: Jets want to re-sign RB Bilal Powell, but think he's leaning toward a Rex Reunion in Buffalo #nyj
I wouldn't mind this: @ManishMehta Sources: Jets lining up contingency plan if Bilal Powell walks. One potential target: Patriots RB Shane Vereen #nyj
If we replace Powell with Vereen that's a pretty sizable upgrade. Hes a perfect fit with Ivory too. I'm all for that. The question is his price tag...
Manish article, ignore. Why would Powell want to join another team where he could only be a third-stringer? Again.
If reports are true, Vereen as a fallback option for "losing" Powell is an absolute joke. Vereen is a stud receiving back. Powell is JAG.
