Per Cimni and PFT Mac is meeting with Wilks Agent this week to start talking about his extension Jets starting contract talks with Muhammad Wilkerson Posted by Darin Gantt on February 18, 2015, 7:19 AM EST Getty Images While the ostensible purpose of the NFL Scouting Combine is to research and identify college prospects, the bigger business happening in hallways and steakhouses in Indianapolis is for proven players. Along those lines, Jets General Manager Mike Maccagnan is meeting with the agent for defensive end Muhammad Wilkersonthis week about a contract extension, according to Rich Cimini of ESPNNewYork.com. Wilkerson is entering the final year of his rookie deal, but doing something now makes sense for the Jets, since they have a pile of salary cap room (which Maccagnan is thanking John Idzik for not using) and can make Wilkerson a centerpiece player in new coach Todd Bowles’ defense.
Finally! This is why I am glad Idzik is gone, I would be scared Mo would walk and we would be both terrible on offense AND defense.
I expected this to happen last season and was disappointed that it wasn't. Was there no need for Idzik to address it then? Easy for us to blame Idzik for everything now, but is that one of the things to blame him for? I was pissed about it the day they announced Kerley's deal.
If Wilkerson is looking for a top of the market deal he is going to get traded. He might even get traded in this draft.
Wilk isi very good, but there is no allegiance to him form this FO. I keep believing that he is fair game to trade, particularly if he tries to hardball the new guys. They do not HAVE to win this year.
Yes, and Richardson and Snacks form the basis for a really strong run stopping 3-4. Maybe the Jets let Snacks play for the tender contract this year as a 3 down guy and then figure out whether to pay him or not. Don't get me wrong on this, I love Wilkerson as a player but you pay top dollar for dominance and he is not a dominant player, at least not at the level the Texans paid Watt for.
Yea he def hasn't showed to be that dominant force ,I don't ever see him having a 20 sack kind of year but he is still really good just not great.Richardson has the chance to be that guy
Wilkerson is an excellent player playing at the top of his game. That top just isn't anywhere near J.J. Watt.
I picked up a Wilkerson away jersey at Marshall's for $20!!! I'm hoping this turns out to be a Jersey that I can wear for a long time..
Mac has to tread very carefully with this conttact. It needs to be nowhere near the deal Watt got, and it needs to be set at around $9 million per year. That's a bit of a pipe dream as players get a huge markup on their contracts. The problem is Richardson looks like he's going to be a better player. If they give him anymore than 12, Richardson will want even more and it's going to screw up the balance of the team investing $25+ million in 2 non speed rushers. I don't want to trade Wilkerson but we cannot overpay him under any circumstance or it's really going to jeopardize the cap. Making him cut-able in 2 years when we need to re up Richardson would be perfect.
I really don't want to cut Mo Wilkerson under any circumstances. That's too much value to let go of without compensation and a cut doesn't even factor into the free agent compensation formula. If he gets hurt, well that's unfortunate but it's the NFL and what can you do? If the Jets sign Wilkerson to a long-term deal they have to do it with the idea that they're going to get an excellent player for the length of the contract. If they sign him to an easily dumpable contract it will have trade-offs built in that work against the Jets in the short term and it will likely be a deal that Wilkerson has some real leverage in to open up new contract discussions down the road. I think the Jets have to come to a decision as to whether it is going to be possible to sign Wilkerson to an affordable deal and if they think it's going to become a problem as the window to sign him closes they need to look at other options now, while they still have some leverage. Wilkerson is worth a top 10 pick in this year's draft, maybe more to the right team.
That's why you front-load Wilkerson's contract the first 2 yrs, so when you re-up on Richardson, you aren't getting raped by the cap - also the cap will increase in time. I think Wilkerson and his agent are well aware he won't get JJ Watt $$$.
That's never stopped an agent from trying to get similar money another top guy at his position got. I think they're aware he won't get the same money but they're also aware that he's probably been around the #2-3 3-4 defensive end behind Watt these past couple years. It'll be interesting to see. I just really think Richardson is going to be more well worth the money spent when he's ready to resign and we simply can't tie up huge amounts of money in two 3-4 defensive ends. If we can get a top 15 pick for him I think we can do it and walk away smiling. The problem with it really is that it sets a poor precedent for getting rid of our own players. I think it would definitely rub Sheldon the wrong way given that the past two top players we've had via our own draft have been traded away. That's part of the reason why I think we'll keep him no matter what.
That's when you negotiate the contract. Right now, we have the chance to give Wilkerson a nice pay-raise for the next 2 seasons for his loyalty to this franchise. By the time Richardson is ready for a new contract, Wilkerson's already received a large portion of his contract. This can be negotiated. Telling Wilkerson and his agent that they want Richardson and Wilkerson to retire as Jets would be huge and I think it would influence Wilkerson in the contract negotiations. I'm not trading Wilkerson, no way - that will have a negative affect on the team. It makes no sense to trade Wilkerson. We can keep both. Also, I don't like to think of Richardson and Wilkerson as just 3-4 DEs, I think of them as versatile defensive lineman that can virtually play in any scheme. Both if healthy a full yr can potentially get you 10 sacks.
