no he wouldn't - what would be the point of cutting a guy on a rookie contract unless he was absolutely terrible (rather than just no living up to expectations)?
Yes. Fat Dewayne wasn't even good enough to be first team all ACC in college yet the pre-draft hype machine was in full force and Bradway was dumb enough to fall for it. It's one thing to draft a bust in the top 5. It's another thing to give up precious draft choices to move up in order to do so. The pick is a microcosm of Bradway as GM.
The thing that capped it for me is when it was revealed he had little to no cartilage in his knees, pretty much bone on bone, a condition that could not be remedied or softened with meds. That guy was on his way out as soon as he came into the league. _
You know, as a Blazer fan, I forgave Sam Bowie for the Michael Jordan fiasco. Maybe Wilson deserves your sympathy too. (Greg Oden can go to hell though.)
this was one of the most fun threads to read on here in a long time. ill never forget that big fat dummy standing up there telling everyone that he just drafted his starting cornerback. he literally enabled him right from the first time he ever met him. and its ok to say a guy sucks on a message board, its not ok to say it to him at his house at 6 in the morning with a flame thrower.
You know, every old-time Jets fan always mentions Johnny Lam Jones as the prototypical Jets "Bust" draft pick. While its easy to see how futile Jones was, I don't recall him entering the league with a lot of hype. Am I off-target about this?
he was the #2 overall pick, taken a pick ahead of Anthony Munoz. hype back then was different but a lot was expected. I don't consider him a bust, I consider a guy like Gholston who did nothing a bust but Lam had some nice moments for us but obviously never lived up to his draft status.
Lam Jones is deservedly in the Jets Draft Bust Hall of Fame but at least he produced a little bit. He actually caught balls and scored TDs and played for a number of years. Gholston recorded NO sacks, FFs or recovered fumbles. I remember he almost got a touch sack after a QB had fallen down but another defender (can't remember) touched the prone QB first. Literally zero production. I think I only remember one tackle behind the line of scrimmage. So while both were huge busts, Gholston had nearly zero production. And it wasn't his fault or the Jets fault for taking him. That was a 5 player draft and we were drafting 6. And it was a huge position of need (seems like it has been forever) so that was the chalk pick for the Jets. Can't second guess it now--in retrospect an awful pick but prospectively it made complete sense. Of course when Lam Jones was drafted I was screaming for the Jets to take one of my classmates and favorite college players Art Monk! _
They did the same thing with Blair Thomas. I used to work with a guy who's cousin was a Dr. and examined Thomas before the draft. He said the guys knees are shot, nearly bone on bone and anyone that would draft him after looking at his medical charts must be a complete moron... of course the Jets took him
I don't think the Bowling Ball with Butcher knives was a bigger bust than Gholston as a player, but for what we gave up I would agree with you. Still, Robertson at least got us some sacks and FFs and a bunch of tackles. Gholston not so much. But we didn't lose picks for him so the loss wasn't as great. _
Blair Thomas for me. Geez I wanted to like that guy so much and he almost got there. Until that fateful fumble against the Bears and he was finished. _
