I know how you feel, but I think the longevity of dominance puts him there. Both of us stress different metrics when judging a QB, we know that.
Yeah. He does have a MVP to his name which I always find surprising. Would be like if Eli won an MVP. That's the comparison of Bradshaw I have to a modern player (not style, but vs his accomplishments vs his skill), might not even be accurate, but that's what I have in my head.
About 10 QBs would have to retire for Eli to ever win an MVP, lol I actually didn't even realize Bradshaw won an MVP. You look at his stats and it's just hard to reconcile it even with the different era. No salary cap in that era completely devalues the SB rings, not to mention the fact that nobody considered him the best player on those teams. Plus, when you hear him talk on FOX, you think "this guy is dumb." People hold that against him, fair or not.
Yeah, per the bolded part, I'm gonna have to correct you on that one. There was no salary cap because there was no free agency. That Steeler dynasty was built almost exclusively through the draft. Bradshaw, Harris, Swann, Stallworth, Lambert, Greene, Ham, Blount, Webster, Belier, etc were all drafted.
He spoke wrong but his point is interesting. Do we devalue the success of the Steelers and 49ers because they were able to keep their studs? They clearly get credit for drafting well, but do they lose a bit of the credit for the longevity of their dynasty? If the Seahawks could have kept everyone they drafted over the last 5 years for the next 15, I have no doubt they would win 3-4 championships.
Good point, but you have to take other things into account. The Steelers in the 70's had other great teams they had to get past (Dolphins and Raiders) and a very good one (Houston). There were also less teams so the talent was more concentrated. Pats do deserve credit for being consistently good during the FA era, but that's more due to Brady than anything else. Look at the most recent teams who've been to the playoffs consistently, they all have one thing in common: franchise QB's. Colts, Packers, Steelers, Saints, Chargers, Ravens, Seahawks.
the Pats of the 00s and 10s have had to get past Indy, Pitt, Bal, Den and a team comparable to that Houston team in the Jets.
If Brady's 4-2 gets * then surely Joe's 3-0 gets at least one due to Jerry 'sticky-fingers' Rice? SBXXIII - The 49ers advanced bast the Champion bears 10-3 despite a number of drops by WR Jerry Rice but come are defeated in Florida by the AFC Bengals 16-13. (Assumes they actually beat the Rams for the division title in the first place) Additionally, SBXXIX - Steve Young doesn't get the monkey off his back as the 49ers lose in the NFCG to the Cowboys. The Cowboys go on to defeat the Chargers by a heavy margin and Troy Aikman is not only 9-0 but now owns 3 rings in as many years and soon matches Terry Bradshaws record as Dallas clean up in SBXXX. (His 12 game undefeated postseason record ends the year after against the Panthers). and so that we are emotionally invested......... 2001 - The Seahawks beat out the Raiders for the AFC West title and for the first time that season they host the Jets (Jets @ Raiders was a repeat of previous week). Vinny blows them away as the Jets advance to Foxboro where a repeat of wk2 occurs and in dreadful conditions the Pats and their rookie QB are unable to move the ball and the Jets secure their spot in the AFCG against the Steelers. Unfortunatly the Jets lose as they had done in the regular season @ Heinz Field denying them a place in the Superbowl. 2002 - Chad Pennington replaces the retiring Vinny as the new QB for the Jets and they secure a narrow divisional title win over their close rivals, the Bledsoe led Patriots. After destroying the Colts in the WC round they move onto Oakland. With the game tied up at 10, Tim Brown almost puts the Raiders in front but WR Jerry Rice drops a 29 yard pass that seemed to slip off his hands. Chad is relieved his pick on the previous drive didn't cost the team manages to put together a drive that results in a FG but the game is tied up by a Janikowski FG after the Raiders fail to punch it home from 9 yards out. The game is finnaly settled when Chad audibles a call that would've seen him hand-off to FB Richie Anderson and instead opt to hit Santana Moss who catches his coverage sitting in for a quick play and busts into the endzone to send the Jets into another AFCG game. Titans were good that year but beatable and lets say Warren Sapp is banned for facemasking or hookers...........Jets win it all!!! So if Jerry Rice didn't have super sticky gloves.............. 1) Troy Aikman and Terry Bradshaw are the only 4 rings QBs. 2) Bengals actually have a SB. 3) Tom Brady is known only to Pats fans who claim they could of been something more then a joke if "that idiot Belchick hadn't stuck with that kid once Drew was back and healthy". 4) Chad and Co. have a ring and Herman Edwards is a genius ofc, The Jets still lose a lot of FA's that year and a return to the norm and into the depths of Geno Smith can still be expected.
... that were completely legal under league rules ... (i) Adhesive or slippery substances on the body, equipment, or uniform of any player; provided, however, that players may wear gloves with a tackified surface if such tacky substance does not adhere to the football or otherwise cause handling problems for players.
Oh, you must not be aware that the NFL Rulebook includes an express exemption to the "adhesive substances" policy that allows its use on gloves. Here, I'll provide it for you so you can feel free to NEVER HAVE TO STATE YOUR WRONG OPINION AGAIN regarding the matter: (i) Adhesive or slippery substances on the body, equipment, or uniform of any player; provided, however, that players may wear gloves with a tackified surface if such tacky substance does not adhere to the football or otherwise cause handling problems for players.
Stickum was considered as an 'adhering' substance under that ruling. Magnigrip CL on the other hand (Odell Beckham) is not as it is compliant with National Operating Committee on Standards for Athletic Equipment’s rules and regulations and apparently doesn't adhere to the ball.
The "Stickum" you are referring to is the Stickum-brand paste ... and was the only product Stickum (the company) made at the time. Rice specifically refers to using a "spray" - and it is both (1) likely he was using the term "Stickum" in the generic sense (like people use the term "Kleenex" for tissues and "Xerox" for photocopies or "Coke" for a soda), and (2) even if he was referring specifically to a Stickum-brand spray (that was manufactured after the rule was written in 1981) there is no evidence (none, nada, zilch, zero) that the tacky substance spray Rice was using was adhering to the ball. The rule is explicit - there is an exception for tacky substances used on the gloves that do not adhere to the ball: (i) Adhesive or slippery substances on the body, equipment, or uniform of any player; provided, however, that players may wear gloves with a tackified surface if such tacky substance does not adhere to the football or otherwise cause handling problems for players. To reiterate, Stickum-brand paste is banned (and has been since 1981) because it was getting all over every one and everything. Stickum-brand spray adhesive (and any other brand of spray adhesive) is allowed under the league's Adhesive Substances policy as long as it is only used on the gloves and it is not coming off onto the ball (or opponent). There is no evidence Rice violated the rules and what he as admitted to (and accused of) is expressly permitted by the rules. The fact that a large portion of NFL players and media are apparently ignorant of the rules (as written) is of no concern of mine.
there's no evidence Rice violated the rules other than admitting he violated the rules. 1993 2015 http://www.latimes.com/sports/sportsnow/la-sp-sn-jerry-rice-comment-stickum-20150216-story.html http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2015/02/06/rice-admits-to-illegal-use-of-stickum/
So..... Brady (4-2) Spygate, deflategate, worstcallevergate, vinaterigate, etc... Montana (4-0) Throwing to stickum Terry Bradshaw (4-0) Steriodgate. Troy Aikman (3-0) DMSOgate. Next up is John Elway (2-3), followed by Staubach, Griese, (BigBen has 'dating issues'), Bart Starr, Jim Plunkett and Eli. So were the late 80's, early 90's Bronco's a clean team with no * ?
People seem to be confusing "gloves with a tackified surface" with gloves that have a tacky substance applied.
