Is Peyton Manning the Dean Smith of QB's or is Dean Smith the Peyton Manning of coaches? Both always had talented teams but always choked in the post season.

Dean is the greatest coach of all time, it wasn't just about wins and losses. He stood for what he believed was right, he helped integrate the ACC and basketball in general, he won with class and build the ultimate program. This was a man who was losing players early to the NBA in the 70s long before it became the norm. He sacrificed many championships looking out for his players. This was a man that told Michael Jordan to go pro when Jordan wanted to come back for his senior year. The next year they made the elite 8- think Michael Jordan could have helped? He did this w/ countless players sacrificing wins for what was best for the people he cared about. As much as he loved basketball it was about more than basketball. when he retired he had by far the best team in the Country going into the 97-98 season, he stepped down so his longtime loyal assistant would be set up to win. Who else would do this?

His Carolina teams helped develop my love of the sport, always recruiting NY players and winning and losing the right way. His teams were never out of a game, he always took on all comers and w/ as many star players as he had it was always about the team. They played basketball the right way and I was hooked at a very early age. There were many great wins and some tough losses but I nevre felt like Carolina didn't have a chance w/ Dean Smith on the sideline.

Some coaches have more wins, some have more championships but there will never be another Dean Smith who was the total package.

So, you can be the greatest at your profession even if you choke in the post season with the more talented team?

On behalf of Peyton Manning we accept your apology.

No, I am discussing Dean Smith and comparing his success to another athletic figure. If you aren't mature enough or emotionally stable enough to understand the comparison you are free to not participate in the discussion.

    Hahaha!

Not a fan of Duke but since this thread has turned into a "link fest," some impressive across-the-board class shown by Duke fans on their Blue Devil message board. Given the seemingly irrational Coach K-hate that exists (even here on a New York football message board), I think it's safe to say it would be doubtful seeing the same consistent level of sensitivity and reverence on a Tar Heel message board had the shoe been on the other foot. That said, it does speak well of Smith:

Dean Smith was one of the first coaches I've ever actually seen coach on TV. He made the game look fun, always about his fundamentals. He got me interested in playing basketball that's for sure. Those early 90s UNC teams were fun to watch.

Absolutely ridiculous comparison and stop trolling, you've been around here long enough to know exactly what you are doing.
