Building your franchise around CB's is like letting the tail wag the dog. The reason we're where we are right now is that the best player the previous regime managed to draft was a CB. And he knew it.
I agree 100% but that said is there a top QB out there worth going after with the extra funds? Fact is we are either signing a cheaper vet, drafting a QB or sticking with Geno so in that case why not spend the money on a huge position of need for the top player available. Seattle didn't have much cash tied up in the QB position so they spent elsewhere particularly focusing on their strength which is Defense. If we sure up the OL, bring in Spiller and restructure Harvin I feel like our offense is just as talented as Seattle's and our D would be vastly improved. Forget Cro and see what Milliner and McDougal can do in the number two slot. If we got Revis I feel like safety becomes more of a priority than CB so Milliner has help over the top. All that and resigning Wilk is easily accomplished with money to spare. Don't forget between cuts and restructures....there will be more funds available than currently projected. Everyone knows that building around a franchise QB is the best way but fact is we aren't getting one this year and I would like to watch a competitive team this year.
I wouldn't call it blowing money. A player of his caliber not only eliminates the opponents best receiver but he improves the entire defense by allowing the rest of the defense to concentrate on other areas of the field. It improves the D line giving them additional time to get to the QB and it helps the safeties and linebackers opening them up in blitz packages and coverage. It's not blowing money on a CB in my opinion simply spending money on a difference maker in a position of need. I think he would take 14 mill as well, he's 3 years older than Sherman.
Just because a QB isn't available doesn't mean that you have to spend the money in a place where you're unlikely to get dollar for dollar returns. If the Jets needed a LT this off season and one wasn't available the answer wouldn't be to throw a record-breaking contract at the best LG out there. That wouldn't solve the problem at LT and the Jets wouldn't be winning anything without that LT anyway. Get the QB, then think about how to best optimize the talent around him.
He is not a miracle man. He covers one guy. There are plenty of options for QBs to throw to in the age of offense. QBs are not sacked because Revis shuts down his man. Of course you want a good corner. But let's be real about the money. Get me someone who actually puts the QB not he ground if we are going to talk real money.
Perhaps I have another reason. Maybe it's just because I would like to return his severed head he's been kicking around back onto his fathead body on my wall.
Exactly. ... and I would add that, not only does he eliminate the opponent's top WR, but he also essentially shuts down an entire half of the field....he "cuts the field in half"...I keep hearing analysts say this about Revis, and that's why I called him arguably the biggest defensive difference maker not named JJ Watt. He's truly a special player, more than just your typical Pro Bowl shut down CB. He's pretty much in a league of his own, and still very much in his prime....he's worth every penny he will get and it's an absolute no brainer that we go after him!
Revis has a ring because Pete Carroll fucked up. If Pete Carroll didn't fuck up, Revis would have missed out on a ring playing with arguably the best QB of all time, the best TE in the league, and a hell of a supporting cast defensively. This is the guy that's supposed to put a rebuilding team over the top at age 30? I don't know how many times this can be said with different words before some of you get it. Revis coming back here would be for pure nostalgic purposes, unless you're into being a wildcard team at best while spending $14 mil on a CB.
Revis has a ring because Mike T put the squeeze on the best CB to ever play for this team while giving ridiculous contracts to wastes of space like Santonio Holmes. Typical fuckin Jets. I hope Woody is ashamed seeing this.
There is no way in hell Idzik, Tannenbaum, whoever should have given Revis the $16 mil he was looking for. No. Way. In. Hell.
That would be true if we didn't waste so much cap space on such worthless players. You don't improve a team by getting rid of its good players.
"No. Way. In. Hell." ..... Well when you say it that way, it puts extra emphasis on your words ... powerful stuff, that way you can beat your opinion into our skulls without having to bother to find any facts to support them. lol
What exactly does it mean to "build your franchise around CB's"? Would I pay him elite QB ($20+ M per) money? No. Revis played for NE for $12 M last year. Was it better to blow $3 M on Dmitri Patterson, waste a #9 overall pick on Dee Milliner, and start scrub street FAs the entire year? So long as you manage the rest of your roster / salary cap wisely, having good CBs doesn't preclude you from drafting and signing good players at other positions. You could just as easily tie up money in any other position. Look at the Lions. They had like 40% of their payroll invested in 3 players: Stafford, Megatron, and Suh. They are "building around their franchise QB" and haven't won a thing.
I would take any of the three, but Dez/DT are going to get elite money. Cobb probably will get overpaid if he's not back in GB. He's a product of Rodgers in my opinion, but still a very good receiver. You don't pay a CB $16 mil, that's just the way it is. There's a reason Tampa cut him and there's a reason NE only gave him $12 mil. Sherman, the best CB in the league only makes $14 mil. His price tag at the time was absurd and I'm extremely happy we got Sheldon Richardson instead. Did you really just tell someone else they don't have facts to support their opinions? You're too much. But you DO have a masters degree so I guess I can't argue with you.
well if i apply your revis logic to both DT and Dez then you don't want them Bryant didn't win a super bowl with the QB with the highest QBR this year, the best rushing attack in the NFL, and the best offensive line in football. DT didn't win a super bowl with the greatest regular season QB of all time, great weapons around him, and a top 5 defense why do these players get a pass but revis doesn't? don't say WR is valued more, calvin johnson is probably the greatest WR of the past 20 years and still hasn't sniffed the NFC championship game let alone a superbowl
A few things here... 1. You just tried to make a point about DT not winning a Super Bowl by saying he had the best regular season QB of all time. You don't see an issue there? 2. WR is absolutely more valued than CB. Just because you don't want to hear it doesn't mean it's not a legit statement. How many teams won rings riding the coattails of their elite CB? It's QB/WR or in a special case, TE that gets you rings. 3. The only reason I even said anything about this is because Einstein was using the Pats Super Bowl win as a reason to justify paying Revis top dollar.
1.) so are you saying a team needs the greatest QB of all time ever just to win a super bowl? i see no issue with what i said 2.) how many teams have you seen winning with an elite WR in the pass 20 years?
It's a classic bullshitter's tactic. Say your opinion over and over with more emphasis so as to make it seem more legitimate. It makes him look stupid I guess but we are all entitled to our opinion.
