http://www.ganggreennation.com/2015/2/4/7976163/report-jets-have-some-interest-in-ryan-mallett He's suffered some injuries, but there's upside and there's no doubt he can drive the ball down the field. Very inexperienced, but could beat Geno out in a competition if he plays his cards right.
I'd bring him in to compete with Geno. Mallett is a career backup what has he done that makes you he can definitively beat out Geno? You want him to beat out Geno or you hope he beat out Geno.
Assuming he came cheap and that you didn't have a plan to go get a bigger fish at QB this off season why wouldn't you go get somebody like Mallett? It's not like the Jets have much talent at QB right now and the one guy they do have could use all the pushing the Jets can provide to put up or get out.
He could beat out Geno, if Geno doesn't bring his A game. Both are questionable decision makers, the one that makes the better decisions could win the job. Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing what Ryan Mallett brings to the table. I've seen enough of Geno Smith. This would be a good competition for Geno Smith though. You still give him the opportunity if he improves. A QB like Bradford, you are shutting the door on the Geno experiment more than likely.
Bradford is like an egg back there. You bring him in and Geno is likely to get random shots at starting for as long as he's here.
Would love to bring him in to compete, but I see no reason that the Texans would let him walk. They traded for him for a reason. And something tells me if we lured him away from a team that traded for him and then named him starter, we would be overpaying.
With the right coaches there is no telling what the upside on Mallet could be. Big kid with a strong arm, everyone was patting the Patriots on the back when they drafted him. If he can play game manager for a year on a cheap contract we have already upgraded our QB situation.
I know he's a free agent... but the team we'd have to pry him away from traded for him and then named him their starter, so it's more than likely they are going to try and keep him. We are probably going to have to toss more cash his way to lure him from Houston (because there's no other reason he'd choose us over them) and that may make the signing not worth it. I'm all for bringing him aboard as long as the price is right. He's definitely intriguing. I don't know that he has what it takes to be a legit starter in this league but he would be good for competition, that's for sure.
Mallett doesnt have the game experience and numbers to really say how he would turn out. Other than his height, how is he different from Simms? Doesnt matter, I think the Texans will keep Mallett, Fitzpatrick and Keenum in camp. I would be very happy if they drop Fitz, as he is the guy that could take the job from Geno.
He's shown almost nothing in the NFL in several seasons, but he does have enough pedigree and ability to make him a worthwhile pickup as QB competition. But if they signed him, I also want another considerable acquisition as well. Mallet and Geno are not sufficient enough for a QB competition IMO, unless this regime is extremely high on him.
Glennon has a good amount of starting experience through 2 seasons and has shown quite a bit. Bradford is injury-prone, but has also shown quite a bit when healthy. Mallet has done nothing so far. I agree that he's a decent option as one of two other QB acquisitions, but those other two offer more experience and have shown more promise
If the plan is Geno, Mallett and Simms (or a draft pick), that would be a horrible 3 and I wouldnt want to start the season like that. If the Jets do bring in Mallett, they also need to bring in a more mature guy like Matt Moore or Fitz and have that guy paired with Mallett and Geno. That looks a bit better.
During a preseason game this season, BB unexpectedly took Brady out so as to mimic a game situation for Mallett where he would come in at a moments notice. He was entirely unprepared for this and after that game, he was cut (maybe a week later without any more play). Don't have a link for this--I merely recall it happening. This said, Garropolo was going to be #2 regardless imo--this just made BB's choice easy.
I remember him also having "attitude" and "maturity" concerns as a draft prospect as well. You'd hope he's grown over his time in the NFL and since getting shipped off by New England, but it speaks to why he couldn't be the only and primary source of competition for Geno if signed.
if we can get mariota, and decide to move on from geno.. any of these very average qb's should be getting a 1 yr deal and then we can throw our money at Cam Newton in 2016
Mallett sounds more like competition for Simms than anything else, at least to any degree of reasonable certainty. I'd hate it if the Jets' only move at Qb this off season was to bring in someone who at best might beat Smith out. Smith's real problems come up in real game situations, and on top of that when the season is still meaningful. The Jets need someone who has a track record of doing better than Smith when it counts. Mallet has no such track record. Imo if in fact Mac gets him, I am okay wiht it as long as that's not all they do in getting a vet Qb. In fact if they want to cut both Smith and Simms, get Mallet, another vet Qb who has gotten it done at least somewhat more than Mallet, and also draft Mariota, heh, I would not criticize that at all.
