He signed 1 "mercenary" contract and that was this past offseason. It's not something he traditionally does. It's a path he could take sure, but it's not something he's done a lot of to consider it something that he does, definitively.. When he was here the Jets were the ones that weren't giving him long term contracts. B/C they had a team on the brink they offered him the short term, stop gap deals when he wanted a long term commitment. He got that in Tampa and signed it. They are the ones who let him go. He didn't have intentions of being a mercenary at all here or there. It was only this offseason that he bet big on himself taking the mercenary deal from NE. There is a better argument to make that he signed the NE deal in hopes that a big season after being released will bring him a long term deal over any future plan of bouncing around as a mercenary. Ideally, no player would really want that anyway.
Yes I think Revis will sign a long term deal, he's already lost a season to injury. if he signs a 1 year deal again and gets hurt he won't get paid what he wants. I see him signing a multiyear deal w/ his next contract.
No smart team is giving him the money he's going to be looking for over a multi-year deal. Revis is going to have to make concessions if he wants guarantees past year 1. The rest will have to be made up in incentives and bonuses.
this is the key question.. i notice with the anti-Revis signing arguments, the number seems to get higher and higher, 16M, 20M, etc.. the reality is the market for him is going to be right around Sherman's 14M per season. he may have a number of suitors, and an inflated ego, so i'll guess he'll both want and receive the highest contract. I'm thinking 14.5M per season gets it done, around 3yrs, with a good amount guaranteed. I'd be onboard with that. fwiw, Davis got 9M per (total steal), and DRC got 7M (which doesn't even put him in the top 15 of CB contracts). Corners are quickly catching up to DE's as highest paid position on D.
If you're into nothing but nostalgia and you can't let things go, sure. If you're into building a team set up for longterm success and flexibility, that's a terrible move. We aren't in the position to offer that kind of money to a 30 year old CB. So like I said, for nostalgia? Great. I unfortunately do not give a shit about that.

With the way veteran contracts in general are going up, and the CB position specifically as you show., If you locked him down at around 14M per-for a 4 year deal let's say, Idk if it's possible, but just saying you could lock him up with a 4yr/14m per contract, by years 3 &4 especially that deal would look like a steal. Especially if this Jets team is good by then, which by pairing one of the best defensive players in the game in the backfield behind that D-line, there's already a good chance they might be.
if he never played for the Jets, that is a good move. has nothing to do with nostalgia. and yes, we are in the position to make that move. he's 29, turns 30 later in year. He'd be 32 when the 3 year contract expires.
I agree I don't want Revis since he is going to want to much money but I think we need to go after cro and another db like Maxwell only because im not sold on milliner and mcdougle is a huge question mark Also, if we can land a good OLB that could help put pressure on the qb it will take pressure off our dbs
I may be killed for this but so be it. Bring Wilson back!! He is about as good as it gets for nickle corners. I know his plays given up were costly and sometimes we question what the hell he was thinking, but the truth is he's not getting destroyed game in and game out. He's not a play maker, I honestly can only think of one Kyle Wilson INT.. and even that's a blur. However, for the most part he locks up pretty well on his assigned guy. He gives up short passes but is usually there to tackle his man. PFF has him ranked fairly high usually for nickle corners. Even the 2012 year i thought he played very well on the outside when Revis went down. He fits this Bowles system that relies on man corners. He's no gem, can be consideres a bust I guess BC he never grew into our #1 or 2 at that.. but he transitioned well to his position.
Again, if you just want the guy here to say hey look, we have a really good player on our team, sure. But that's not a smart way to spend your money when you are trying to build a team from the ground up. I'll say it again, I would lose a ton of faith in the current regime if we bring back Revis at a number like the one you stated.

Actually, tanny gave him the band aid deal mostly because his hands were tied by the cba and the restrictions heading into the uncapped year. It really was a unique situation made worse by the hold out

How anyone could NOT be DROOLING over the chance to get the best CB in the NFL back is beyond me!?!?!?! Revis is arguably the biggest defensive difference maker in the NFL not named JJ Watt....how fans could allow themselves to be blinded by their hatred for the man is beyond me....I couldn't care less if he was the biggest money-hungry prick in the world, if he was the worst person in the world, if he's the best CB out there and can help us win football games then by all means put him in a Jets uniform! I mean, we're not holding him up for Sainthood here, we're talking about a football player...we're fans, which means we're supposed to root for the team to win games, not root for them to win person of the year awards, or follow their personal lives off the field....just put the best dang players on the field and let's have a WINNING team for a change, not a carefully balanced salary cap full of average players who won't demand too much money! The name of the game is to spend the majority of your cap to get as many big stars, difference makers, as you can, and fill in the best you can around them with the remaining money. That's how the best franchises historically do it anyway.
