Of course. It's "common knowledge" that you're the most intelligent poster here. Bwaaahhaaaahhhaaaaahhhaaa!
Some just stay on the internet all day making tens of thousands of mindless posts, convincing themselves of their own superiority. Everyone else knows better. Bwaaahhaaahhaaahhaaa!
You realize that he found Jason Fergeson in round seven. After he left, Bradway let Coles go for a #1 pick, traded that pick along with our first and fourth round picks for Dewayne Robertson with the fourth overall pick. Ty Warren who was also available at #4 overall went to the Patriots around pick 11. Yet it was Parcells that was somehow a horrible drafter.
Jason Ferguson failed drug tests and he fell, we got lucky. His drafts were mostly brutal. had a few nice picks of the 30+ picks he had. In 3 years leading our drafts (1997-1999) Parcells selected 31 players, of those 31 players: - players started a total of 400 games for us. 12.9 starts per pick -8 never played a down for us, most were gone w/in 2 years. 2001-2005 under TB we had 36 picks: -players started 831 games for. 23.1 starts per pick 3 never played a down for us. and BP inherited the #1 overall pick and #1 pick in each rd of his 1st draft.
It is hard to fault Parcells for a draft pick not sticking because our head coach was able to draw superior talent in free agency. A lot of Jets fans cry about not getting Manning, Pace, etc. but James Farrior was a damn good football player. Of course he rotated with Roman Pfifer because under Parcells we had two starting caliber players in his slot. With that being said here is what he got us through the draft in four short years: Curtis Martin (cost us # 1 and a #3) - hall of fame running back John Abraham - pro bowl pass rusher Chad Pennington - solid starting QB Shaun Ellis - solid defensive lineman could start inside or outside Jason Fabini - solid starting left tackle James Farrior - pro bowl linebacker Randy Thomas - solid starter at guard Laverneous Coles - #1 WR for us Jason Fergeson - solid starting nose tackle Anthony Becht - starter at TE, great blocker Dedric Ward - our # 3 WR became a #2 for the Fins Ryan Young - backup filled in admirably at right tackle during our playoff run Leon Johnson - backup RB and great on special teams Kevin Williams - decent backup corner Even if you do not take into account the fact that we lost four draft picks as a penalty for stealing Parcells from the Patriots that is quite a haul. Most head coaches couldn't do better with twice as much time.
James Farrior had ONE good year for the Jets in 5 seasons then left as a FA. Abraham was drafted by Groh Pennington drafted by Groh Ellis drafted by Groh Coles drafted by Groh Becht drafted by Groh 31 draft picks in 3 years, inherited #1 pick and not a single one of those guys made an all pro team or a pro bowl team with the Jets. Curtis wasn't drafted. If BP hadn't left us in cap hell we could have re-signed him.
Parcells was GM when Groh was coaching. No one will really know how much Parcells had to do with that draft. Even if he was just smart enough to get out of Al Groh's way it puts him light years ahead of guys like Bradway and Idzick. Even without that draft, Parcells did a very good job. Your 31 pick count is misleading since he lost two first rounders, a second rounder, two third rounders, and a fourth rounder (penalty for Parcells + cost or Curtis Martin). Also the draft used to last nine rounds, some of those picks were worthless no matter who you took. James Farrior was a 2X pro bowl player, it does not matter that Herm let him earn it somewhere else. Curtis Martin cost us a #1 and a #3, the slick move Parcells made to steal him from our division rivals was better than any draft pick I can remember. Jason Fabini like most Jets got screwed in pro bowl voting but is a proud member of the Jets four decade team. Randy Thomas was a pro bowl third alternate with the Skins, not Parcells fault that he left. Jason Ferguson never made a pro bowl but few seventh rounders do. He did go on to have a 13 year career as a starter in the NFL.
Groh was in charge of those drafts which was part of the reason we finally had a good one. he lost picks but still had 31 in 3 years which is a ton and inherited the top pick in the draft and did very little w/ it. Farrior was a bust here, had one good season(under Herm's staff by the way) then signed a big deal w/ Pitt when we had major cap issues. Fabini was an excellent pick, BP did a good job w/ the OL.
I have posted the articles many times through the years where BP said Groh was in charge of the draft. Not my fault I know more than you.
A question for you Junc - as a fan over here in the UK I wasn't able to follow the game as closely as I would have liked until the internet really kicked in, so i didn't get much of a feel for how the Jets were perceived in the States. Were Jets fans impatient back in the 70s and 80s or is it a modern phenomenon? And do you reckon they are more impatient than fans of other franchises?
In this area b/c of the extra media attention and more people fans have always been less patient. It's different now w/ the internet than it was 20 years ago but the media and fans turned on players quickly then too- probably not as quick but still quick. does it happen w/ other teams? yes, many other teams. it's rare for a fanbase to really be patient in this era.
just to expand on this. I started going to every home game in 1990. I have seen so many players and coaches cheered early w/ high hopes only to get booed out of town -Bruce Coslet -Browning Nagle -Pete Carroll -Boomer Esiason -Blair Thomas -Neil O'Donnell -Anthony Becht -Al Groh -Chad Pennington -Herm Edwards -Eric Mangini -Mark Sanchez -Rex Ryan and many, many more
and in those examples the fans were right on practically everyone of them. it's a good thing we* booed most, if not all, of those bums out of town
