With the cap space that we have, there is absolutely no reason that we shouldn't be able to re-sign any DL players (or any others for that matter) that we want to keep. You don't waste a high 1st round pick on insurance or depth. That would be criminally stupid, and much worse than taking the next best player.
Thank you! It makes me cringe when people say we are a "rebuilding" team! No we are not! we have a core and young pieces... we just need to add some much needed PLAYMAKERS to this roster. It's always been that way to me. We have no home run hitters...no game changers on either side of the ball... I know we have Percy but we're using him as our main guy instead of a gadget player which is where he's most effective. Even on defense we don't have that must account for player behind our d-line.. we need some body that QB's and WR's must know where they are at all times because an error could lead to a big play.. or that LB that's gonna knock a QB's lights out a few times a game.. I know people say free agency isn't the way to build a team but in our case we kinda need a free agency splash in the worst way.
With a rookie GM, mostly new scouting & personnel dept., a rookie CS, and holes at QB, CB, FS, WR, OLB, OG, and quite possibly TE and ILB, we ARE a rebuilding team. Get used to it. That doesn't necessarily mean that we will be awful, but there will undoubtedly be a bump or two in the road.
I just want to see improvement. That's all. ...oh, and to draft Mariota at 6. But seriously, I just want to see a team that plays hard, competes, and improves week to week. If we can get that I think we'll all be happy sooner or later, with sooner being more probable.
Who says that we will? We could have signed them already had we wanted to do so, Overpaying could potentially be worse than losing them. Nothing is certain and that is why you take the BAP because your needs three years down the road are almost impossible to predict.
I think there's a chance that the Jets could contend for a wild card spot next year if Maccagnan does his job and really gets the most out of the $40+ million he has to work with. If we can get a decent draft and a few quality free agents to plug some holes in the roster, combined with what looks right now to be a relatively weak schedule, they could be playing meaningful football in late November and into December.
I don't see how us drafting Mariota would prevent us from finishing the draft, or signing players of need in FA, which is how we will improve this season, but alright. I also really don't want to turn this thread into another debate about Mariota. We can go back to any of the other threads if you'd like to debate about MM some more.
so if we add solid players to maybe 6 of those 7 or 8 needs and draft the other ones we're still a rebuilding team? Or just a team that needs someone to call our own franchise QB and everything else will fall into place?
what do you mean who says that we will? most teams sign their draft picks that are efficient. to think that we won't resign mo wilkerson and richardson is ludicrous
The Jets have had rookie men at many of those positions for the past 15 years, and still were trying to compete, calling it a rebuilding team doesn't really stick unless they plan on building with youth, does it? If they use the brunt of cap space to sign mid to late age free agents instead of going very young and rolling more cap numbers over to next year, what makes it a rebuilding team?
In essence, yes. Rookies can take a while to develop. Some of them could bust. The new CS and FO can, and probably will make some mistakes, but hopefully, none of them are huge, and something that would be very difficult to over come. Chemistry can take a while to develop. Don't forget that the holdovers on the team will be learning new offensive and defensive systems, and even the STs unit could have new plays or philosophies to get used to. Regardless, unless we get Mariota or Winston, we're still not gonna have a franchise QB.
I don't think they'll sign a bunch of older vets, but I could be wrong. I think they'll target the 24 and 26 year-old FAs.
The Jets aren't the only team with a lot of cap room, so they won't have the corner on the FA market like a lot of people think. I think they can sign an impact player in the age gap you are predicting, two if they are really lucky, but for the most part they will be depending on the older group if they really want to fill holes. I know there is a projected huge FA class this year but that class is going to get really small really fast when teams lock up their own players.
I'm sure that there's some truth to what you say, but the Jets don't have to sign impact players at every position, plus there are some teams who won't be able to re-sign their players due to cap issues. They can sign younger second tier guys to increase competition and be depth if necessary. I don't think they have anything to gain by signing a bunch of older players since they're not going to be SB contenders and Mac plans to build primarily through the draft.
I think by the way Woody is talking, they sign 3 projected impact players this year, 2 to high money contracts and 1 to mid money (guessing Cromartie although I don't like him at this point), I don't think they'll get more than 1 of those 3 in your age group. Then they will lean on their new scouting team to find diamonds and maybe they land 1 young one but mostly it will be dirt. Building through the draft is a nice concept but unless you have a group of proven scouting gurus then you end up grabbing June 1 cuts. Maybe we got lucky well this huge influx of youth in the FO but it's more than likely that we hit a ditch instead of a few bumps in the road early. Then we'll have half the fans here wanting to fire everybody again.
I think it is realistic to say that we will resign Mo Wilkerson OR Sheldon Richardson. To say that we will not be able to keep both of them AND Snacks should not be hard to believe.
Positions at which the Jets have no NFL talent under 30 on the roster: QB WR (SE) RG C LT LOLB RILB FS Positions at which the Jets have young talent with question marks: LG ROLB LCB RCB This is very much a rebuilding franchise. Just imagine what the roster looks like without Mangold and D'Brick and that becomes clear. Both those guys are in their last few years in the NFL assuming normal age-talent patterns hold true for them. That said, having competent QB play would have made a world of difference last season and would do so next season as well.
